Darkspine walked along her beach, her son close by, patrolling her territory. Ever since the voodoo-enchanted stallion Atal'ai had come to her beach and given her foals, she'd been wary of the presence of others. She worried for her territory and for the foal she'd kept of the two she'd birthed. To her knowledge, there were no male naga in exsitence anymore and her son was as close as it came. Naturally she was even more protective than an overprotective mother normally would be.
"Do not stray too far from me, Zala," she called to the colt following near.

It had been a very long time since Lady Saravess - and yes, she did insist upon the title - had seen another being, let alone spoken to one. How long, exactly, she had almost forgotten. But then, that was the fate of one who refused to spend very much time on the land. She would never say that she disliked her solitary life - far from it - but even one such as her longed for someone to speak to, if just so that she would not forget how to communicate.
When she heard a voice calling out in the distance, her curiosity was piqued and she dared to venture closer. Ah - was that - yes, it was! The best of all possible encounters: another naga! And from the looks of it, a foal, as well... though there was something off about the young male. Well. Come to think of it, when was the last time that she had seen a male naga?
Drat all of this time spent on her own! It seemed like her memory was slipping, and she knew it wasn't due to age, so the only other explanation was the length of time she had gone alone with only her thoughts for company.
Bright eyes took in the other two, the naga mother and almost-naga foal, and Lady Sarevess moved close to the shore, emerging just behind them. She knew that mare, she thought, but... Well, no matter. She would either remember her name, or be reminded. Either way, she would get that which she needed.

Zalashji heard the sound of water behind him and turned to see the other naga mare rising from the surf. "Mother. We have company."
Darkspine looked back and spotted the other naga. How long had it been since she'd seen another of her kind? Too long, she reckoned. Moving to walk back along the beach, she put herself between the new mare and her colt. "Hello, sister. It's been some time since I've seen another naga around."

Lady Sarevess acknowledged the other mare's protection of her colt by ducking her head just slightly and retreating a pace or two. Normally this protective behavior seemed pointless to her, but as this was the nearest thing she could remember seeing to a male naga... well, in this case she could understand the protectiveness.
"Greetings, sister. We are too few and too distant. You are the first naga that I have seen in countless ages." She was careful not to mention the colt, pretending for the moment that she hadn't truly noticed him. Besides, male naga or not, a foal was a foal and as such, mostly beneath notice to Lady Sarevess.

Darkspine took a more regal, yet still protective stance. "What brings you to the surface?" And more specifically, her beach. "The hunting here is not so good. Only enough to feed me and my child."
Zalashji watched the other mare from behind his mother. He'd never seen another like her before, aside from his reflection. She'd told him that there were others, but they were a dying breed. He figured the two of them were all that was left, until this female had appeared.

Well, why was she daring to break the surface? She wasn't hungry for the moment, and had no intention of challenging a mother with a foal for hunting rights - such a choice would be foolish, since her Sister naga had double the motivation to win. Instead, Lady Sarevess tossed her head a bit, and decided to be truthful... more or less.
"I was traveling nearby when I herd your voices. I felt it was worth investigating."
She had no intention of staying past her curiosity being fulfilled, the other mare had nothing to be overly concerned about. Why, however, was that foal looking at her in that way? Lady S wasn't truly paying him any mind, but those blue eyes kept burning into her. What did such a young foal think of meeting another naga?
Oh well, it was of no importance.

The purple mare thought this over an nodded. "Well, it's not often that we see another of our kind. My son has never seen another naga until today. I wasn't sure there were any left in the area."
Stepping forward to stand near his mother rather than behind her, Zalashji gazed at the strange mare. "Are there any others where you live?"

"Truly?" She asked, her slight disappointment difficult to conceal. "We are far too few in number. Far too few." But what was to be done about it? There was little anyone could do when males were virtually nonexistent and mares could go seasons without seeing another of their kind.
Her musing were interrupted by the colt, however, and she spared the youngster a glance. "No, young one. You and your mother are the first of our kind that I have seen in a very long time." How long, she wouldn't - and couldn't, really - say.
Sometimes she truly loathed how her memory tended to slip when she had been alone for long periods.
