I've noticed that we've had some problems getting started, so I'm opening this thread to discuss what everyone thinks of the game, what's giving us problems, etc.
Something I thought of is that maybe everyone's just stuck on what to do. If so, what can I do to help? Maybe if I play as the first king just to give everyone a chance to get on their feet?
Also, I worry the setting might be a problem for some people. Would a later date make it any easier for people to RP? Maybe a different setting, even a more fictional one?
If you have any suggestions, now's the time to put them forward. The rules and setting were originally created by me without anyone else's input since I needed to have something around before anyone would join, but now that there are others we can have an actual dialog to make the best RP we can.

Well I'm going to leave this open anyway for any discussion about anything that people think could be improved. My biggest problem has been being so "behind the scenes" that I don't have the same point of view as everyone else, so I'm always worried that things that seem completely fine to me are bewildering to everyone else.

I would like to ask... we have two members that never posted. What they need to be encouraged to start? I will do it. I just want to see this roleplay get big and busy. Just ask me anything and I will do it if it help the clan.

This thread's more about what you think of the rules, setting, etc. -- suggestions for the direction you want INR to go in, etc. (For the record though, Leon_Icewind is one of the first people to be interested in the game. He made it clear he wouldn't be able to actually participate for a while due to real-life issues, but I decided to invite him to the guild anyway since his show of interest really helped motivate me early on when I was first trying to find players. Just thought I'd mention that so no-one gets too upset about it. smile )

Well, I will do anything to help make this roleplay work.
As for suggestions, maybe once in a while you or any other mod can post about events that are ocurring in someone's court or lands that will force the lord to change his plans or make a decision. I was thinking for a while about doing it myself, but it could be interpreted as a way to take advantage in the story. Maybe I can message you some events as I make them up, and you decide who has the good or bad luck of getting it (including myself). Other players could do the same if they wish, so you do not have to think a whole setup by yourself. Some of us could even get an event they made themselves. If you are afraid of being unfair without realizing it, wait until you get enough events, then throw a dice or use an online number generator.
I hope this helped a bit.

I was actually considering something along those lines. The biggest problem I've had with the idea is that a random event can sometimes be good, adding a little spice or helping to pick things up during a lull in activity, but other times it actually detracts from the RP that's going on.
How about a vote every turn either for, against, or neutral (i.e., no vote) to the possibility of a random event? Nothing as specific as "I want a revolt in Franconia", but a request something to be introduced to help inspire RP (e.g., things are slow, so have the barbarians invade). A random event could happen at any time, but the players can also say "Ok, we could use one now" or "Now's not a good time". Likewise, for country-level events in response to RP, if players have a direction they're heading in they probably want the mods to stay out and/or request a specific event. In that case, a PM or something could do to make sure everyone is on the same page.

I think things (good or bad) should happen no matter what. Maybe there was a good harvest here or a drought there. Maybe a small revolt if the lord is acting like a tyrant, or lazy serfs if he is too lenient. Some intrigue if he is away from his lands for too long, barbarian incursions in lands near the Eastern Marches... the list is endless. It does not have to detract from the roleplay, especially for people like me, always asking you to surprise me once in a while with events, to force me change plans and make things interesting.
Maybe you should ask each roleplayer how many events they would want in a year (whether they get exactly that numbre or not is up to you, as it will detract for the surprise), and message you to change their "settings" (I will take as many events as I can get, for example)
Or a poll where everyone votes to decide an average of events everyone will get. How many they get is up to luck (or a dice/number generator), as well as wich event takes place in a province.
I still think players could help in making them up, however. Your imagination has to rest too or it will be nothing left when you want to make the story progress.

Yeah, the default would be "Something could happen at any time", but I really think the players should have some say too. For example, I tend to RP rulers that deal with a lot of internal conflict; having a mod step in and start dealing out penalties without me having any input discourages that kind of RP. A little back-and-forth between the mods and the players is necessary to reach the right balance between a moderator-run and a player-controlled world.

But maybe these things should be dealt in private messages rather than in the forum. Doing it openly, for everyone to read, means that any player will know beforehand that something will happen, and use it to take advantage of others.

Well I meant for the thread/voting idea to be for random events, not RP-driven ones.
