XXXXXXXXName: Morpheus Oneiros. (Morpheus is the Greek god of dreams. Oneiros is the name given to Morpheus in the Iliad.*)
XXXXXXXXAge: Thirty-seven.
XXXXXXXXMagic Affinity: Medicinal alchemy/herbology and dream magic.
XXXXXXXXAppearance: Morpheus is a large man, standing head and shoulders above most of his peers at an impressive six-foot, four-inches. He is not however simply large in the vertical sense; barrel-chested and broad shouldered he is a wall of a man who, if it weren’t for his gentle demeanour, could easily be very intimidating. Facially he has quite square-ish features, a strong clean shaven jaw line, and a wide nose with a smattering of uneven freckles across its bridge. Morpheus’ eyes are mossy green and emotive, it is his eyes that transform him from an imposing hulk that mothers may instinctively shield their children from, to a figure who naturally seems fatherly and trustworthy. In fact it is not uncommon for Morpheus to have the children of his friends clambering over his large frame, swinging from his thick arms and pulling on his unkempt muddy brown hair. Another of Morpheus’ defining features is his hands. Like the rest of him they are unusually large, yet portray no sense of aggression or malice. Instead, his giant spade like hands are more often than not padding down earth into porcelain pots, keeping his precious plants safe and snug, or scooping up sick babes into his arms and gently checking their temperature. Clothes wise Morpheus is not a fancy man and garbs himself simply and practically. As a habit he tends to stick to earthy tones and natural materials like wool, cotton and leather.
XXXXXXXXPersonality: It is unquestionable that Morpheus’ true calling in life is towards helping people. Despite his massive bulk he has a heart so soft and tender that he practically leaks care and consideration. Nothing makes him feel happier than knowing that his actions have helped someone; whether that is carrying a heavy load for someone of a more fragile constitution, or using herbology and his dream magic to banish nightmare’s from an infant’s sleep; he simply adores helping people. In fact, it is so nearly impossible for Morpheus to turn down a cry for help that it can be to his detriment - it is very easy for him to be walked all over by people who abuse his giving nature.

Despite being so very generous with his help Morpheus is still somewhat socially awkward. Morpheus can easily come across as shy, but in reality he is nearly a mixture of humble and a placid. He has a very mellow and gentle personality and tends to be quite quiet – even around those he is friends with. Consequently he sometimes gets ignored or forgotten about and he is far too nice to hold it against people and speak up for himself, increasing the issue further. Fortunately this doesn’t greatly bother him. Rather than spend an evening at the tavern drinking and laughing with friends he would much rather be in his potting shed with his plants, unwinding at his own speed, perfectly content.

Around children Morpheus really comes out of his shell. His gentle and loving persona really blooms around youngsters and he will eagerly engage in playtime that other adults of his age may find annoying or unbecoming. Morpheus however sees the gleeful smiles of children and happily volunteers himself to be a climbing-frame, mule or part in their imaginary games. Many around him have said how great a father he would be, so far however he hasn’t found a partner and makes do with interactions with other people’s children.

Some would argue that Morpheus is too soft to be able to cope with the sometimes hard and emotionally draining nature of his role as a medic. In some ways they would be speaking the truth – Morpheus does get very distressed when faced with other people’s misfortunes and does not take failure very well; any loss of life in his patients he believes is a reflection on him – even if their death was outside of his control. However, his passion to aid spurs him to do better next time and apply himself one-hundred percent in the present and reflect on his negative emotions when all is said and done and the time is more appropriate.

XXXXXXXXName: Somnus. (The Roman equivalent of Hypnos, the Greek personification of sleep.)
XXXXXXXXMagic Affinity: Aesthetic/Narcotic powers.
XXXXXXXXEssence/Animal: Malayan tapir and opium poppy.
XXXXXXXXAppearance: When I quest I rarely ever have an image of my quested character in my head... So much of the appearance section here is very loose and up for artistic interpretation. In fact, I think I prefer it when the artist has more free reign because the ideas that they get based around the personality and sketchy physical traits that I define are usually better than anything I could come up with and the end result is usually something both the artist and I are happier with.

Somnus’ first stage is almost impossible for me to envision in my head and for that reason I will leave it 100% up to the artist. All I will say is that opium poppies can be bred in a huge variety of shapes and colours, however, the most iconic poppy colour in general is red and I would probably suggest that be included in Somnus’ main colour scheme. Flashes of bright poppy red would probably combine nicely with the black and white of a tapir.

As a stage two and onwards I can envision him in my head a little better, but still, it is very basic. The species of Tapir I am questing for is the Malayan Tapir. If possible it would be nice to see Asian influences in his dress style as when I visited Malaysia this summer I noted that it seemed to be very much a mixing pot of Indian and Chinese cultures, which should give you a lot of lee-way to design something. I will link at the bottom of this post to the Wikipedia page for Malaysian cultural outfits so that if you’d like to do a little research of your own you can.
XXXXXXXXPersonality: Somnus is very similar to his user in many aspects and yet gives a distinctly different impression to the medic he works alongside. Tapir are solitary creatures by nature and the homunculus most certainly takes after the animal he resembles. However, despite both man and homunculi being quiet and tending to spend a lot of time in their own company; Somnus tends to do so for different reasons than Orpheus who, at his core, is a friendly person. Somnus avoids socialising because he genuinely doesn’t enjoy the company of many other people. He finds idle chit-chat difficult and the concept of having a conversation simply for the sake of being friendly is very alien to him. He is not completely without empathy, but in comparison to Morpheus’ very personal desire to make other people happy all the time Somnus definitely seems rather cold hearted.

One would assume that this lack of enthusiasm for compassionate human interaction would make him a bad companion for a job which more often than not requires a gentle and personal approach. However, the dynamic between Somnus and his user appears to work well. Morpheus is the one who takes the role of the comforter and does the majority of the ‘care’ work – reassuring patients and dealing with the majority of the dream healing, which takes a soft and emotionally conscious touch. Somnus on the other hand plays the role of the dispenser of sleep and remover of pain effectively and without the distractions of a tender heart; balancing out Morpheus nicely.

Although he sees no appeal in social frivolousness Somnus is inherently drawn to the opportunity to gather more information; an integral part of Somnus’ personality is his thirst to learn. He’d happily spend hours reading books on medical theories and practices, and although his main interests are in the field he works in, he entertains other learning disciplines eagerly. Morpheus sometimes jokes that if it wasn’t for the fact that you can sometimes learn more from people face to face than from a book Somnus would never speak to anyone, and he’s probably half-right.

It would be wrong however to believe that Somnus is devoid of social feelings, the most obvious counter to that view being the strong attachments he feels towards select individuals he feels are worth the effort. Morpheus in particular is the person Somnus cares for the most, and the homunculus works incredibly hard to make him proud, craving his attention and approval. (It is this which makes him work hard in his role as a medic as opposed to being a caring person like Mopheus.) Somnus is actually quite possessive of Morpheus’ attention and although he wouldn’t ever take out his frustration at being put in second place to another person on said individual, he can become quite attention grabbing in perhaps fairly immature ways so that he can regain Morpheus’ main attention.

The Malayan Tapir (Tapirus indicus), also called the Asian Tapir, is the largest of the four species of tapir and the only one native to Asia. The scientific name refers to the East Indies, the species' natural habitat.

The animal is easily identified by its markings, most notably the light-colored “patch” which extends from its shoulders to its rear. The rest of its hair is black, except for the tips of its ears which, as with other tapirs, are rimmed with white. This pattern is for camouflage: the disrupted coloration makes it more difficult to recognize it as a tapir, and other animals may mistake it for a large rock rather than a form of prey when it is lying down to sleep.

Malayan Tapirs grow to between 6 and 8 feet in length, stand 3 to 3.5 feet tall, and typically weigh between 550 and 700 pounds. The females are usually larger than the males. Like the other types of tapir, they have small stubby tails and long, flexible proboscises. They have four toes on each front foot and three toes on each back foot. The Malayan Tapir has rather poor eyesight but excellent hearing and sense of smell.

Malayan Tapirs are primarily solitary creatures, marking out large tracts of land as their territory, though these areas usually overlap with those of other individuals. Tapirs mark out their territories by spraying urine on plants, and they often follow distinct paths which they have bulldozed through the undergrowth.

Exclusively a vegetarian, the animal forages for the tender shoots and leaves of more than 115 species of plants (around 30 are particularly preferred), moving slowly through the forest and pausing often to eat and note the scents left behind by other tapirs in the area. However, when threatened or frightened, the tapir can run quickly, despite its considerable bulk, and they can also defend themselves with their strong jaws and sharp teeth. Malayan Tapirs communicate with high-pitched squeaks and whistles. They usually prefer to live near water and often bathe and swim, and they are also able to climb steep slopes. Tapirs are mainly active at night, though they are not exclusively nocturnal. They tend to eat soon after sunset or before sunrise, and they will often nap in the middle of the night. This type of behavior characterizes them as crepuscular animals.

Opium poppy, Papaver somniferum, is the species of plant from which opium and poppy seeds are extracted. Opium is the source of many opiates, including morphine, thebaine, codeine, papaverine, and noscapine. The Latin botanical name means the "sleep-bringing poppy", referring to the sedative properties of some of these opiates.

The poppy is the only species of Papaveraceae that is an agricultural crop grown on a large scale. Other species, Papaver rhoeas and Papaver argemone, are important agricultural weeds, and may be mistaken for the crop. The plant itself is also valuable for ornamental purposes, and has been known as the "common garden poppy", referencing all the group of poppy plants.

Papaver somniferum has many sub-species or varieties and cultivars. Colors of the flower vary widely, as do other physical characteristics such as number and shape of petals, number of flowers and fruits, number of seeds, color of seeds, production of opium, etc. Papaver somniferum Paeoniflorum Group (sometimes called Papaver paeoniflorum) is a sub-type of opium poppy whose flowers are highly double, and are grown in many colors. Papaver somniferum Laciniatum Group (sometimes called Papaver laciniatum) is a sub-type of opium poppy whose flowers are highly double and deeply lobed, to the point of looking like a ruffly pompon. A few of the varieties, notably the Norman and Przemko varieties, have low morphine content (less than one percent), much higher concentrations of other alkaloids. Most varieties, however, including those most popular for ornamental use or seed production, have a higher morphine content, with the average content being 10%.

The opium poppy is the principal source of most naturally occurring μ-opioid receptor agonist opioids. The opium poppy is, by definition, the root source of all opioids considered opiates. Opiates are extracted from opium and poppy straw. Opium (also called “raw opium”) is the latex harvested by making incisions on the green capsules (seed pods). Poppy straw is the dried mature plant except the seeds, harvested by mowing.

Use of the opium poppy predates written history. Images of opium poppies have been found in ancient Sumerian artifacts (ca. 4000 BC). The opium poppy was also known to the ancient Greeks, from whom it gained its modern name of opium. Opium was used for treating asthma, stomach illnesses, and bad eyesight.

An opium high is very similar to a heroin high. The user experiences a rush of pleasure, followed by an extended period of relaxation, freedom from anxiety, and the relief of physical pain. Breathing slows and the pupils of the eyes become like pinpoints. In the brain, opium binds to the receptors that search for pleasure-enhancing endorphins and painkilling enkephalins. Because opium floods these receptors, it produces a higher state of pleasure than the body can produce on its own. Opium also inhibits muscle movement in the bowels, leading to constipation, or the inability to have a bowel movement. It works on the part of the brain that controls coughing and—especially when smoked—can dry out the mouth and the mucous membranes in the nose. The effects of a dose of opium last about four hours.

I love tapirs D:
Just sayin'

USER
I like that his name matches Somnus. While you in no way need to change it, I'm just curious if you thought you had to name your user after a deity. Cause you didn't have to. Just saying in case you had other ideas before Morpheus. I also love that he's an "older" dude~
Go old dudes~

Since medicinal alchemy/herbology is a science, not magic, you don't really need to list it under your magical affinity. But I want to know more about his dream magic. How does he use it, what are his drawbacks, what are his limits and how badly does his own magic react when he passes those limits.

All around I like him. I'm interested to see how someone so gentle and caring would be able to deal with the destroyed and often hostile environment of the outside world. You've touched on how he does react to losing patients. But the outside world is just a mean place out to get anyone that wanders into it at the moment, so maybe a bit on his reaction to a severe threat?

I understand that there isn't any history since I've been so lazy with updating the guild info section. So I'll just leave this part alone.

GUARDIAN
nomnomnom adorable opium tapir <3

Again I'd like to know the limits of his magics and a drawback to it. Can he lull people to sleep but only on a willing person. Or cough up sleeping gas or something? I just want to know more.

Thank you ; A ;
I love an open quest as far as appearance goes. I feel less stressed to get it right, and I don't have a previous sketch or image I feel like I need to go off of. I also love the style of dress you've requested. Different cultural styles are always fun for me to try out. So I'm really thrilled with this section.

Personality section is perfect You've noted his flaws, his strengths, interests, desires. I can't see a reason why you need to change it.

/HORRIBLE AT CRITS BAW

MAGIC
I noted it in their individual crits. But while you've touched on who they use their magic together (the combination of providing sleep, then dream healing), I'm still left curious as to how these powers would better be used together as Somnus grows and his magical abilities evolve and refine themselves.
