Lattice had decided to go outside with her project for the day which was to make a new deck of Hanafuda for various friends she'd had made the past few days. Normally she thought about saving this sort of thing until she knew these people better or even became closer to them but she just felt like doing something artsy. Drawing specialized Hanafuda was how she got her artsy desires out and generally the ink behaved better when she did these little sessions.

...Most of the time.

The ghoul had stayed on campus and even found a public commons place on the outside that had a couple of tables here and there for her to sit at and focus on her art. An ink pen in hand she quietly drew lines but sometimes the ink had other ideas and made a line where it shouldn't be. Lattice paused and stared at the errant line and then stared at the ink on the end of the pin, "No. Bad." She muttered softly and then got out a different cut bit of cardstock and tried anew. She had to one side been a bunch of failed designs due to the ink not doing what she had wanted it to.

Another day, another chance to mingle out in public with someone she didn't really care to know. At the very least, Riyo was getting better at staying in one place and listening to people babble on about themselves, sometimes asking a couple of questions to assure them she was interested. Though, she wouldn't admit there actually were times she was interested. Maybe today would be one of those days? Probably not, but Riyo was a pessimist anyways so the cup was half empty (If it actually contained anything at all).

While the feline usually frequented benches around campus, they got a little boring after awhile. Time to discover a new place to find suckers new acquaintances. Ah, the commons. She'd often skipped over the place in her efforts to put herself out in the open, but a certain ghoul seemed to catch her eye. Art? Riyo liked art. She could draw stick figures like a boss... Okay, well. She liked looking at it more than she liked doing it. Silently, she approached the ghoul, though there was a fair distance between them when the feline stopped in her tracks. Riyo didn't like invading personal space as much as she didn't like people invading hers.

At first, she simply observed as Lattice worked her magic, though eventually she just had to ask. "What're you making?" There was no malice attached to her voice, just morbid curiosity.

She was in the middle of making a new line when the question was put to her, Lattice paused - her concentration on the ink wavering for a moment before she seemed to win over it and the line was completed. Lattice heaved a deep calm sigh but not out of frustration but more because she was coming slowly out of her state of focus that she was deeply embedded in. Her masked face turned up toward the one that stood nearby.

Lattice tilted her head to the side a bit before she answered, "I am making Hanafuda decks for my friends that I have made here at school." She set aside the pen quietly for the moment.

"They are a deck of playing cards essentially," Lattice added, "you can play a lot of different games with them."

Riyo felt a little awkward after the moment of silence. Maybe she shouldn't have bothered the ghoul after all? Silently, she watched as the ghoul went about creating the lines, almost ready to walk away when she didn't receive a response

Only when Lattice finally spoke did Riyo show her attention again. Raising an eyebrow, the ghoul carefully sat on the other side of the table. If this person had a problem, the feline figured she was more than welcome to state her problem so it could be addressed. "Like poker?" Obviously she wasn't familiar with such a deck of cards. The pictures confused her a little, not that they weren't pretty. "I've never heard of such a thing. Only your average playing cards."

Lattice didn't mean anything by her silence she was just socially awkward that way. Still she was glad when the other person kept on talking civilly with her.

The ghoul seemed thoughtful before she nodded while she spoke up once more, "Yes, a little likes that. There is a game I play called 'Koi-koi'. It is very fun to play, at least I think so." She quietly moved to gather up some of the cards she'd been making testing to see if they had dried or not by very gently rubbing already ink covered hands over the surface, when the ink didn't smudge she seemed content.

"If you want to learn more I can try to teach you..." Lattice offered after she checked the ink.

Tilting her head at the short explanation she was given, Riyo examined the cards more carefully now that she was sitting down, though she didn't dare touch someone else's possession without permission. "Interesting." She supposed, though the fact that it was fun to play didn't tell her much.

Hm. She certainly wanted to learn more. The feline always wanted to learn more. That way she could show off her knowledge at a later date, but did she have the time?

Riyo's long, slender hands reached into her pocket to check the time on her phone, contemplating how she would manage her time when she got back to the dorm. It would cut things a little close, she supposed, but...

"Yes. If you're not too preoccupied, I wouldn't mind that." The cat ghoul nodded to her new masked acquaintance. What was it with ghouls and masks nowadays?

"I am not," she assured simply when the ghoul accepted the offer to have Lattice teach her the game. Much like making the decks she had planned to do this with people she felt comfortable with or even knew a little better but if someone was curious enough she felt happy enough to teach she supposed. The other ghoul had apparently caught Lattice during a very open day.

"My name is Lattice by the way. I shall begin by explaining to you the suits of the Hanafuda deck," she said quietly as she set aside the ones she was working on and got another much more used set out of her sash. She quietly laid the cards out by suits carefully looking each one over before she laid them down so she could have them all suited appropriately. She pointed at each one and named them, "Pine, Plum Blossoms, Cherry Blossoms, Wisteria, Iris, Peony, Clover, Pampas, Chrysanthemum, Maple, Willow, Paulownia."

It was easy to see that the deck was handmade by Lattice with an art representation based on the theme of ink and flowers coinciding somehow. It was a fairly well put together deck.

"I'm Riyo." The ghoul said simply, elbows resting on the table while her fingers interlaced in front of her. For some reason, she had a much easier time with the quiet ones. Lattice seemed very withdrawn, which was absolutely fine with the feline. The less she knew about this new acquaintance, the better. Less a chance of her asking uncomfortable questions about Riyo.

Following Lattice's finger as she pointed to each card, the cat ghoul nodded in understanding, silently impressed at the craftsmanship this ghoul had put into making the cards. At least 50x better than anything she could scribble out. "Interesting. So 12 suits total." That was definitely more than a usual card deck, and the fact that they were based off plants was fascinating as well. Which made her wonder... Was there an artistic version of poker to be played with these?

Lattice nodded accepting the name, "Pleased to make your acquaintance, Riyo," the ghoul said simply and just let it go at that. Sometimes you just learned more about someone with simple conversation and not asking many questions.

Right now she was focused on teaching.

"Yes and some of the suits have a ribbon," she quietly pointed at the ones that had ribbons in them, "a bright," then she pointed out the cards that were 'bright', "and animal cards." she pointed out the animal cards, she waited for Riyo to soak that fact in before she picked out three cards arranged them.

"In Koi-koi you want to form a Yaku. Each Yaku is worth a certain amount of points. Right now I have what is called Akatan, the poetry ribbons. This arrangement is worth 6 points if you get it." She gathered up the cards entirely and shuffled them, "You learn point values best when you play, but that is the gist. You want to end the game by having the most points."

That was it? that was the greeting? How...

... Pleasant. Huh.

Examining the cards with ribbons, the feline nodded quietly. It seemed like a game that was more focused on showing off the artistic merits of the cards than really playing, which was still fine with her. "Lots of things to remember for a simple card game." The feline mused. "But interesting, considering in order to play it right, you can't forget any of the combinations at the risk of point loss." Riyo enjoyed learning new things, especially complicated things, so this whole lesson was worth it.

"You say you're making these for friends?" Ugh, that word. She was hating it more and more as people preached to her about the merits of friendship. "How long have you been at the academy?"

Lattice nodded a bit, "You start to remember the value of each Yaku as time goes by so the game gets easier as you learn it." she replied with a small shrug. "In the end the challenge is simply in strategy and knowing when to pick up what card."

The ghoul gathered her cards and started to shuffle them a bit, "The game begins when the dealer is decided through a small game of rock-paper-scissors. Then the dealer deals out the card and leaves a draw pile. The game goes from there." Lattice finished her explanation, for her the game needed to be played in order to learn it right. Her 'visitor' didn't seem like she had time for a game today, however.

She nodded a bit, "At least I consider them friends. They have been very helpful during my transition - as well as kind. I want to repay them for their kindness," Lattice replied. "Only a small while, I am still settling in so to speak. How long have you been here, Riyo?"

"I imagine it's just like memorizing formulas and equations." The feline mused, her tail swaying slowly behind her as she watched Lattice shuffle. There were a few things Riyo knew from childhood. Rock paper scissors was one of them. Along with solitaire...

Lots and lots of solitaire.

"Well." Riyo started as the topic strayed from the game and towards school. "One thing I've noticed about people around here is that if you think they're your friend, they probably are." Just because of the sheer number of (what she considered) attention craving little pricks. That's what friends were for in her mind, after all. "I've been here a little less than a month, I suppose. Still not really used to it." Having people surround her all the time... Hearing other demons through the walls some nights. It was odd, since she was so used to the silent confines of her own home.

"Just a bit," Lattice agreed with a small grin on her lips but it was gone soon enough. She set down the cards she was shuffling for a moment and helpfully got a piece of paper she'd written the combinations that held points on and quietly scooted it toward Riyo in a manner that was almost rather subtle.

She nodded lightly as she picked up the cards shuffled them twice more before she began to deal the cards out wordlessly pulling Riyo into the little game. Lattice wasn't going to beg and if Riyo didn't play along so be it. "This is true. There seem to be very few around here that I have met that have intentions to use and abuse others," at least she didn't sense any such things. Once the appropriate pile of cards were dealt out she set down the draw pile. She let Riyo have the first turn.

"It is hard to get used to new surroundings sometimes," Lattice replied quietly.

Riyo had been too busy focusing on Lattice's face to notice the oh-so-subtle slip of her hand, more intent on listening to the ghoul's words. "Yes, it worries me, since you can't scare someone with a hug." Though it seemed that everyone was more than happy to be all giggles and smiles.

Finally looking down, the feline noticed the spread of cards and paper with combinations. "Mm, sneaky." She mused. A smirk formed at the corner of her mouth as she picked up the cards that had been dealt to her. Of course she realized there was a good chance she would lose this game. The feline had, after all, played very few games with actual people. Just cats... That got bored after 2 minutes.

Silently, she drew a card and threw it on top of one that had the same suit. "There."

There was a thoughtful pause before she quietly nodded, "You are correct, Riyo," she replied softly as she made sure all the cards were in order, "but it is also the job of those more experienced to do the scaring right now. We are here to learn to be more effective at it at least some are. It really depends on your ... purpose."

It was possible there were some students that couldn't scare a simple minipet much less anything more complex. Right now things were quiet almost innocent or so it seemed to Lattice.

"I can be quite sneaky if I put my mind to it," Lattice replied with a small grin on her lips as she moved to lay down her cards before picking up a full Yaku.

Lattice hummed softly, "It never hurts to treat others with respect unless they show themselves unworthy of it."
