It was right at that period of the day where the light was there, but fading rapidly. Classes were done and a strange feeling covered the entire school as people worked hard getting ready for the booths and speeches that would happen the next day.
Roch should have been practicing. He had a job to do at Riley's booth, and any warm up would be good for it, but he wasn't. Instead he was stepping onto the steps of the demon dorm, his skateboard under his arm. He was going to have Danny teach him some tricks, and maybe forget about the whole "boil/ghoul" problems that came with crushing on someone.
It really sucked. That's why hanging out with Danny was the PERFECT thing to do. She didn't think deeply about anything!

Danny, on the other hand, was yawning as she walked to the stairs where they had agreed to meet. Stairs were always a good place to begin learning to skateboard. Well, at least that's where she had learned. Then again ... Roch didn't seem like he'd like faceplanting first thing like she had. Maybe they would just start on the cement walkway next to the stairs, near the nice patch of cushy grass.
At the moment, Danny was a tad late, because she was walking a tad slow. That should've been a tip off enough that something was up- the fact that she was walking. Danny never walked anywhere if she could help it. Running was the way to go!
Skateboard in arm, Danny yawned her way too the stairs and then cleared her eyes with her hand. "Hi ... Roch. Okay. Skateboarding. Yeah. Let's do it." She threw her own skateboard down, and gestured for him to do the same.
"What did you want to learn first?" she said, scratching her own bed head. Danny hadn't even put her hair up for this event. Her long hair was in tangled bed head curls behind her. All the while though, she was just thinking about what trick would be best for impressing Taryn. That's what this was all about right?

He looked at her, a bit blankly. She looked like crap. Sure, Danny didn't spend much time worrying about how she looked, but usually she at least put her hair up, or didn't have dark circles under her eyes--that was more often him. "Uh, I dunno," he admitted. "I know the basics, but not much more than that. How about some simple ones? Like jumping and s**t?"
Which was downright pathetic, he thought, but oh well. If anyone could get him through it, Danny could.

Danny scratched the back of her head. How was she supposed to teach this? Danny couldn't even teach herself anything, let alone other people. Still, Roch was counting on her- so was Taryn!
"Uhmmm ... well ... first ... start by going in a straight line. Like just riding. I want to see something," she said, scratching her head. It was vague, but he would have to do it. She was teaching him! Students always listened to their teacher right?
Well not counting Roch. He didn't really listen to anyone.
It was a good thing Danny had picked an out-of-the-way location. Instead of having him practice around the main entrance, they were at one of the side doors. Danny had never even used the door and didn't know about it until she had scoured it out today. It was useful though, that's for sure.

He nodded, dropping his board and getting on, skating in a straight line with his hands in his pockets. He could do that much pretty easy. "Hey, why don't you show me and I can copy it?" he asked, stopping and flipping his board so he could pick it up. "I learn better by seeing."
Nope, she still looked like crap, he thought. "Were you up studying all night or somethin?" he asked curiously. But even as he said it, he realized that that was definitely not gonna happen. "Playing video games?" Yeah, that seemed a lot more likely.

Well there was a big part of the problem. Danny stopped herself and then haulted Roch ... well "manually." She picked up his back foot and turned it ever so slightly, then did the same with his front food. "That's ... better. Yeah?"
He wanted to watch her? Well okay. "Sure I can show you. Uhhh. Let's ... do ... " Come to think of it, she didn't know the names of many of her tricks. They were just ... tricks. Danny racked her brain rather slowly for something that was simple but looked impressive. That was the goal.
To his last question she said, "Uhhh yeah. Video games. Those." It wasn't the truth, but Danny didn't want to whine and cry about a stupid nightmare. She wasn't a scareling anymore. She could handle a nightmare on her own.
Oh, he could ... yeah! Danny skated forward and performed a sort of sloppy 360. It was like turning the board underneath her while she herself was in mid-air. Danny would gladly explain with a lot of "thingy" and "right there like that"'s in her speech, but it was probably better that Roch was learning by sight.
"Something like that?" she grinned, but it was half assed. The trick wasn't performed quite right. He would get the picture though, right?

"Yeeeah, okay," Roch said, kicking forward and putting one toe on the front of the board. He tried to kick the board--
He fell back onto his a**. "Okay, let's try that again," he said, getting to his feet and trying to wipe the gravel off his a** before he got on the board again. It went along similar lines for the next five tries, but not once did he complain. This was nothing compared to his childhood sparring sessions.
"Hey, can I see it again?" he asked suddenly.

Danny, while trying to focus on Roch and his flipping, was yawning all the more on her board. At one point her eyes closed for a good second or two, before she realized what she was doing and blinked back to life. She had to stay awake! Not only to chase her nightmare away, but she couldn't just fall asleep with Roch working so hard here. That just seemed unfair on her part.
The sleep fought back though. Danny was drifting on her board alongside, and the rhythm of the board was just so melodic ... and ...
By the time Roch said, "Hey, can I see it again?" it was like the words were being said through a glass tube and then filtered with some funky electronics. Danny was softly breathing and had actually managed to fall asleep on her board.
Falling asleep on a skateboard? Never a good idea. A small crack in the sidewalk that she normally would've avoided easily caught her off guard and her board got caught in the rut. Thanks to the lovely concept of inertia though, Danny continued skidding until she was falling onto the ground. She woke up mid-flight and let out a screech as her tanned body crashed into the sidewalk.
Her knees and hands were scraped up, and her chin felt weird after such an odd jarring awakening, but she wasn't anything more than scraped and bruised. "Owwww," she said crossly, trying to sit herself up so she could examine the wounds. Ow ow ow.

He blinked, having seen it all and not realizing what was going on until she hit the concrete. "I don't think you did that right," he said thoughtfully as he flipped his board, stuck it under his arm, and walked over to crouch in front of her.
"Hey, no more skateboarding for now, okay? Must have been one hell of a good game," he added, looking at her wounds thoughtfully. "And you're gonna wanna clean those. I'd suggest water, but..." he shrugged.

Danny was stubborn. "Nooo Roch. I told you I would teach you ... So I'm gonna ..." She blinked and wiped herself off a little. She didn't care how beat up her body got, she was going to do this!
Blinking a few times she leaned on him without realizing she was doing it. Gosh Roch had a nice squishy arm. Kinda like a pillow ...
Nope! Nope! She was awake. Awake awake awake. "I'll get bandaids later. Its skateboarding time." She slapped the board down on the ground as if to further prove her point.
Yeah, it was definitely a good thing no one was around. She would've been embarrassed about that nose dive. Danny sat down on the grass. "Just uh ... try it again. You know. I'll watch and give you pointers." Yup. That was definitely going to ... happen ...

He shrugged and got up, getting on his board again to try the trick again... and again... and again. He actually managed to do it once, which made him grin like an idiot and turn to ask her to show him another trick.
But that was a stupid idea, he thought with a sigh as he looked at her. He popped the board again and headed over to sit down next to her. "It ain't Taryn," he said quietly. "It's Xiu."
Then he waited to see if she was going to give him a hard time about it. He would give him a hard time about it--hell, he had already.

Xiu? But she was. But they. What? Danny shook her head. "But Taryn was staring at you in class..." Why would she do that if she wasn't Roch's secret lover? Maybe she had been watching him and Xiu and Demi ... but ...
Danny put her hands back in the grass sand leaned on them. "Why d'you wanna impress Xiu?" Danny gasped. Did Roch ...
"YOU LIKE XIU?!" she exclaimed, rather loudly at that. That didn't make any sense though! Roch was so grrrr and teased everyone and was mean, and Xiu was so cute and adorable and fragile and ... No no no. That didn't make any sense. Roch picked on Xiu, not ...
WAT.
Even through her panic, her eyes were drooping even more. She dozed off for half a second and then woke herself up. Why couldn't her body just stay awake? She grimaced at the rapid descent of her own willpower.

"Yes, I like Xiu," Roch drawled, looking at her with a hint of irritation. "And it really, really sucks, cuz Demi likes her too and I didn't figure that out till--are you asleep?" he asked, changing the subject as he saw her nod off. "Jack, Danny, you coulda told me you needed to go to bed!"
And it was a great reason to DROP the whole subject of Demi and Xiu, which was what he didn't want to think about right now!

"Xiu is ... nice ... she smells like flowers," Danny said, half awake, half asleep. She really did think they'd be nice together. Just weird. Super duper weird. Maybe they had some sort of secret connection like in the movies. Sweet innocent Xiu with big bad bully Roch? It just seemed like a weird mix. But hey, at least he picked a good ghoul. Not a scary one like savage...
Danny's eyes widened at the mention of bed. "N-no ... I don't ..." Hrrrng. How was she supposed to explain this to him without sounding like a complete wuss? "Oh, I'm having a recurring nightmare and can't even sleep with a frightlight like a little scareling child. Oh but you'd never make fun of me for it." Yeah right. Roch would make fun of her til the vampire cows came home.
She sighed and said, "I don't need to go to bed." It was meant to be ambiguous and vague, but it really just sounded like a five year old whining that they didn't want to sleep yet. It was pouty, and childish. Then again, that pretty much summed Danny up.

Roch was silent for a moment. "Is this somethin' to do with that question about nightmares?" he asked quietly. He probably should have been more thorough in his answer to her, he thought with a reluctant sigh. "Danny... y'know... um... there's a reason I'm a lucid dreamer. Somethin' more than just me bein' hard headed and all that crap."
He reached out, making a fist and summoning his guitar. It was more to have something to do with his hands than anything else. "I couldn't sleep... soundly... for years," he admitted quietly, slowly tuning his guitar. "I still don't sleep normal like."
