Alright, so my old Schrade folder broke about a month ago, and I finally got around to replacing it with this: Four-inch Field & Stream folder, with a rubber handle. Got it on sale at Big Five for $10 (normally $30) It's about twice the size of my previous knife overall (blade's the same length, however), and I think it's meant more for utility than as a carry knife, but still, I intend to use it as such. My only complaint is that it doesn't have a clip on the side for carrying in my pocket, but as you can see, it comes with a sheath which clips onto my belt via Velcro straps. Now, here's my question- it does technically meet all the legal requirements for me to carry it in California, but it's the sheath I'm wondering about. Can I legally carry it while it's in the sheath on my belt, or would I need to just stick it in my pocket? I don't see any reason it shouldn't be legal to carry it on my belt (granted, it'll be more conspicuous that way, but I'm not worried about subtlety if I'm not violating any laws). I'm reading Penal Code 12020, but I'm not sure if it's covering fixed-blades worn in a sheath or not.

I don't see how a nylon sheath is any different from a pocket, fanny pack, or backpack.

Yup. Logic isn't necessary to make a law. The only necessity is that it be inconvenient for the law abiding citizen.

Das Rabble Rouser ITT we hate on Cali rather than discussing knives. Meh, I'm used to it by now. Not like I don't share the sentiment. Also, I love how Big Five charges only $20 for 500 rounds of .22 LR, but the only .22 rifle they bother advertising is some $500 SIG 552 replica in .22 LR. However, if I had the money to spare I'd have picked up the Daisy Red Ryder they advertised for about $35.

Any time you are involved in a convo about laws it turns into hating on Cali. xd I just got a brick of Federal for $16 at Bimart. Right now my collective total of ammo including my sign shop stock is 1424 rounds of .22lr and 48 rounds of .22 short. I kinda want to get a few more bricks of Federal since the shelf in my cabinet can hold 45 boxes of 50 rounds. xd
