Gently was at her desk again today, working once more on copy editing some stories. At least the rush had ebbed, and the backlog had lifted so deadlines didn't seem so crushing. Still, there was a lot to worry about in her other job, which left her feeling no less strained.
But stress was a tool for motivation: she took it in stride.
For now, she scribbled on some copy and glanced up when the familiar old mailman came in with his creaky cart. It wobbled on one side, because one of the wheels had been replaced with a much smaller one. A temporary fix, the mailman once said, but Gently learned from others in the news room that it had been that way for ten years.
Maybe he just liked it now. It did seem to match the way he hobbled. Or perhaps they had just acclimated to each other, setting the pace for one another over the long years of service together. She smiled at him as he approached, these thoughts in her head, and he put a vase of flowers on her desk.
"For me? You shouldn't have, Burt. I've nothing for you," she said sweetly, and he grunted at her. The man never laughed, but she knew he appreciated the humor. He wobbled off and she looked at the flowers in wonder. They were very beautiful, and she felt her heart flutter. She had never gotten flowers like this before. Reaching for the card, she found it without a signature.
But it did ask her to go to a restaurant that evening. She wondered if it was Matthew reaching out to her: they had lost contact since the encounter with a knight that left Alunite in the hospital. Smiling hopefully, she tried to focus on work again but her thoughts strayed constantly. A few hours later, she was dressed and waiting at the assigned restaurant. She wasn't used to dressing up, but she had worn a sleek black dress and a clip in her hair, which was curled into wavy ringlets.
Gently Ponsonby, nervous? Nonsense.

Tag was dressed as sharp as ever in one of his finest Armani suits as sat alone at a table for two, the drinks already served. There were two glasses of fine red wine, one before him and one before the empty seat. Candlelights and a vase of flowers rested between the two seats, white table cloths draped over the surface delicately. It was one of the finer restaurants in the city, and a frequent stop for Tag on his dates.
He waited, patiently, not at all worried about the possibility of getting stood up. The idea of it hadn't even occurred to him. His face lit up as Gently Ponsonby entered the establishment - his date had arrived. He waved hello, a s**t-eating grin smacked across his face. He the gestured for her to take a seat, proud and smug as ever.

To say Gently was disappointed when she saw Tag at the table was an understatement in one way, and not completely true in another. She smiled at him, but not in a friendly greeting. More like she knew something was going on, and she didn't trust him as far as she could throw him.
If all that could be put in a smile.
She moved to the table and thanked the waiter that led her, nodding him off before looking at the older man sitting opposite her. She leaned forward at the table, arms on the table but not her elbows. Apparently that was rude, and she used the childish method of getting away with it.
"To what do I owe the pleasure of this invitation?" she asked, not about to accept that he had simply wanted to take her for a nice dinner without some ulterior motive. She just had to decide if it was Nega related, or if he was still just trying to convince her she wanted to sleep with him.

"Surely a woman as jaw-droppingly beautiful as yourself has been on a date before," Tag suggested, raising his glass of wine. He swirled the wine around in the glass, letting it breathe in the oxygen as he took a whiff of its aroma. He took a sip of the fine wine and placed the glass back down on the table, and adjusted himself to be comfortable in his seat. "You have been on a date before, haven't you?"
"You should drink your wine, its very good," he added with a grin.

Gently gave him a look, though she basked in the compliments. She certainly liked them, and wasn't going to tell him to stop. She was just not going to give in to let him succeed with them as he wished.
She didn't touch the wine.
"Why have you invited me here? I loved the flowers, by the way. I might have known they were your taste." Opulent, mostly overkill. It seemed to fit what she knew about him, and what she was continuing to learn about him. She grinned.
Maybe she should relax a bit, and roll with it. She was on edge because she hadn't been expecting him, and she didn't like being fooled or surprised. It meant she wasn't thinking enough, and even with something as innocuous as an invitation to dinner,it was clearly not in her favor to slack off there.
"Of course I've been on a date before, but I can't help but feel this isn't a date so much as a trap. Not going to drain my energy again, are you?"

"Your welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed them," he said through his delighted smile. He eyed her untouched glass of wine. Although he was disappointed it was still untouched, he couldn't blame her for not taking a sip. Considering their last encounter, she'd be within he reason to suspect he had done something to her drink - but he hadn't. He just wanted her to have enjoy the night, he wanted to please her; and it was an expensive bottle so he really hoped she would at least try the damn drink. "You really should relax and unwind, your tenseness is starting to overshadow your glowing charm. Can't a handsome man take a stunning woman out on a date without any ulterior motives?"
"I suppose that depends on how the evening goes if there will be any activities that just the two of us can do together that would wear us out," he smugly replied. "Are there any activities of this sort that you have in mind?"

Gently was not one who was usually called tense, and she realized that when he pointed it out. He was making her act more on edge than he should have gotten away with, and she didn't like that he could do that to her. It was going to be a difficult game, she imagined, if she wasn't more careful with how she responded to him.
She smiled and nodded, relaxing a bit and sitting languidly, leaning forward so her dress framed her upper chest in just the way she wanted it to, in her chair. She dared to reach for the wine, tipping the glass in his direction as a toast before sipping at it. Surprised by the quality of it, she arched an eyebrow at him.
This seemed a lot of effort just to get into her pants. But maybe he had money and time to burn.
Or a secondary ulterior motive.
"Not that I can think of at the moment. Unless you're particularly interested in tennis? I'm not. But we do have jobs that can keep us busy. You know, outside of our day jobs. Slacking off already, for dating and flirting?"

"I love tennis. I'm excellent at the sport; hitting the ball back and forth. I can hit the ball back and forth all night long, if it pleases you," he winked. He leaned back in his chair and placed one hand on the table, tapping his fingers upon it in a rhythmic pattern before leaning back in. "See, there you again, talking about work and our jobs and blah, blah, blah. Trust me, I'm as dedicated to the job as you are, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy ourselves, or each other, now does it? After all, we do have to eat and why should we be subjected to eating alone when we can eat with a beautiful person instead?"
He was referring to both her and himself.
"Oh, that reminds me, I did bring you something," Tag laughed as he pulled out a small jewelry case from his coat pocket of his suit. He gently put it on the table and popped it open - revealing a pearl necklace inside. It was one that he had stolen from the home of Mrs Winkleson shortly after he killed her by taking her starseed. "I also have something else to give you later in the evening. I'll give you a little hint: Its something shiny that you simply cannot live without."
"So, do you like it?"

Gently gave him a look.
"I bet you spend many nights alone, practicing hitting those balls," she grinned at him, then winked. So she needed to loosen up. He was right, in that way, at least. She was being too serious, and her need to focus on work was giving away how uncomfortable she felt.
Maybe because she hadn't been as disappointed as she thought, finding him here instead of Matthew. Disappointed, yes, but... just not as much as she was telling herself was the problem here.
She took a sip of the wine, breathing slowly.
Her eyes lit up when he pulled out the jewelry box.
"Did you, now? You shouldn't have," she looked coy, like he certainly should have gotten her something, and she knew it. She was surprised that it was actually a piece of jewelry, and not something strange, eyes widening in an involuntary show of surprise.
"Oh, that's pretty," she breathed, then looked at him suspiciously. "Did you steal this off of someone? I mean, if I'm guessing what that other gift of yours is correctly..." she was leaning across the table toward him, looking up at him with a soft expression on her face. She seemed genuinely pleased. And at least from the angle, he got a good look of the way her dress highlighted particular curves.

The blonde took another sip of the wine as his date inspected her new jewelry. Her facial expression spoke volumes - he had succeeded, it seemed, it making her happy. His face beamed as he got a glimpse down the woman's dress, but his eyes lingered for a few moments, he managed to drift them back up to meet with her own. He was a gentleman, after all. He leaned into the table as well, keeping their faces close as he talked in a hushed tone.
"What does it matter where I got them from? They're beautiful gems for a beautiful woman, but I'll let you believe whichever story of obtaining them that pleases you most," he said through his smile, his eyes locked on to hers. He leaned in closer, lips just centimeters apart. "I wish to do nothing but pleasure you, Gently."

Gently was rather taken aback by the gift, though his methods of obtaining it were questionable at best. Wasn't that just a perk of the job, though? She certainly couldn't claim that she had never taken anything off of a civilian she used in one of her traps.
Sometimes it was just too easy.
As he leaned closer a grin coiled the corners of her lips, which just barely brushed his as she dared to meet his silent challenge, whether he meant it that way or not. It was not in her to back down from anything, after all, and this? This was far too good.
"I bet you do," she purred softly, lips touching his in what might have been the start of a kiss, but far too fleeting to really count. Then she pulled back and left him hanging, taking a breath and moving to put the pearls on just to amuse him and let him see.
"I must say, you do bring me lovely gifts. I'm eager to see the rest of your presents to me. We'll see if you've earned a little... pleasure... in your own right."

The brush against the lips may have been too fleeting to qualify as a kiss, but between the gesture and her innuendo, he arched a brow in delight. It wasn't until that he too pulled back from leaning in that the waiter arrived to the table and handed them each their menus.
The rest of the dinner was a blur of innuendo, laughs, and a lot of wine. In fact, most of the night from that point on was a blur until...
SLAM.
Tag's apartment door swung open as he pinned Gently against it through the threshold, arms wrapped around each other. He gripped her by the back of her thighs and lifted her as he moved towards his couch, kicking the door shut behind him and they flopped onto the couch.

Gently let out a soft sound of pleasure as he carried her to the sofa. She clung to him with her arms and legs, her lips seeking his with a passion half borne on the wine and the rest her own attraction to him. She had one hand in his hair, gripping it tightly enough that might hurt him.
She wasn't really thinking about that.
When they finally found the sofa and she shifted a bit, she was granted enough space to take a breath. Her mind cleared long enough for her to get a few words out.
"Didn't you say," she paused to kiss him, unable to really resist with the heat and energy between them. She did manage to break it of her own free will this time, "you had another gift for me?"
She held off kissing him again, breathing hard but slowly, trying to maintain some control of herself. It was more difficult then she would have imagined, but she looked at him keenly, a mischievous glint in her sea green eyes.

Tag's eyes opened wide as he pushed himself up on the sofa, his torso looming over Gently's and his waist pressed against hers. "Really? You want to talk about that now?" He looked her dead in the eye. Of course she did. He should have seen that one coming. He frowned slightly as he reached into his suit pocket that had been thrown onto the floor.
From it, he pulled out a glimmering starseed of the middle-aged Mrs. Winkleson, and placed it on the coffee table in front of the couch, only two feet away from his date.
"See? Its all for you," he said before getting back to business and started to kiss her collarbone, working his way up to her lips.

Of course she did, indeed. It was the point of this game, in the end, though everything else was certainly making it worth it. Still, she couldn't make things too easy for him. She reached for the starseed he conveniently left on the table, not deterred as he returned his attentions to the other matters at hand.
"Hmmm," Gently purred, half scrutinizing the starseed, half in pleasure as he kissed her neck. She tilted her head to allow him an easier time of it, but her attention was on the shining crystal he had given her.
She had her facts, and it was easy to put together where the starseed had come from.
She pulled her head back when he tried to kiss her, giving him a sharp look and moving to hold the crystal up between them. She looked at him from behind it, eyes sharp and focused despite the haze of alcohol that still lingered on her.
"If this is all you have to offer," she said, with a dismissive laugh, "I think I have somewhere else to be. Talk to me when you've got a senshi starseed." she moved, though her body protested, to get herself free of him and the sofa, standing and adjusting her dress accordingly. She smiled and waved her hand, moving to the door with purpose, intent on just leaving him there in a daze.
