Deinocti lazed on the rock that made up the roof of her small den while basking under the African sun while her paw stayed firmly pressed on the tail of a rather terrified looking mouse that seemed to want nothing want to flee and return to it's family. It seemed as though she could not decide on the small creature's fate just yet. The canine wasn't exactly hungry but it was starting to become boring just watching it squirm under her claws.
"Now, now...what should we do with you? Do you know how to swim by any chance?"
This was her kind of amusement. It was a cruel sort but without company, this was as good as it would get. Though her den was starting to look a little dirty with all of the tiny skeletons littered the ground inside and out.

The sun’s heat beat down on the brown wild dog’s back, turning his normally bouncy gait in to more a lazy trot. The morning had been exciting enough. Chasing various small mammals and charging through a group of feeding vultures, but as he continued on his journey through the day he had found little else to occupy him. A loud yawn escaped his maw, the smell of water nearby catching his attention. A drink would do nicely, and perhaps he would find something interesting there. What he soon came upon instead of water was a grey form sitting atop a rock talking to her paws. He wondered idly if they spoke back to her as he slowly trotted closer. His tail gave a lazy wag upon seeing it was another wild dog. Rex was always up for a bit of company. He jumped on to his hing legs, placing the forepaws against the side of the den. “Hello!” A large grin split his maw.

A yelp escaped the female’s mouth as the other canine suddenly appeared. This gave the trapped mammal the chance it had been waiting for to escape. Deinocti’s glare passed between the new arrival and the escaping snack as if she couldn’t decide if she should give chase or turn and snap the other. Finally deciding on the latter, her gaze fixated on Rex’rhi, a frown on her face.
“And just who are you, whelp?” She demanded, her voice stern as her abysmal eyes kept watch on him. Deinocti was less than pleased at this point and even though she yearned for company, it was likely not something she wanted from her own kind nor from the opposite sex.

The brown male cocked his head to one side after the female yelped. Had he startled her? A small movement caught his attention and he turned to see a little mouse running off from the pair. Maybe that was what she had been talking with then, instead of her paws. His attention was brought back to the female as she spoke to him, the goofy grin back on his face and ears quickly perking forward. “Whelp? I’m not a whelp, I'm a Rex’rhi!” He game a small sniff at the female before he cocked his head once more to the side. “What is your name?”

“My name is Deinocti and now if you’d remove yourself from my den, that would be lovely.” The frown still stayed on her face, looking him in the eye. Was he dropped on his head as a pup or was he always like this? Regardless, Deinocti had no intention of sticking around and finding out. She didn’t want his company, even less now.
“Now if you’d excuse me, I’m going to go hunt now.” That was a blunt lie though. She wasn’t hungry but if he got him to leave, she’d at least leave her den temporarily.

A small tail wag came in reply as she shared with him her name, though slowed to a halt as she continued her sentence. Rex looked down at his paws resting on the side of her den and then back up at the female. Slowly he backed up, letting his paws fall back to the ground, and sat staring up at her. He sat looking a bit dejected, glancing quickly around for something that might help keep a conversation going. He didn’t want to leave now, go back to his walking alone, but the female certainly didn’’t seem too pleased. Maybe if he could find something they had in common she’d let him stay!
At the mention of a hunt he bounced up to his paws. “I like hunting! Can I come with you? I’m a good hunter.” Rex bounced slighly on his paws where he stood, staring hopefully up at Deinocti.

Deinocti was already on her way off of her rock when the other wild dog asked to come along on her fake hunt. “No,” She snapped, her head turning back to glare at him. “You can’t come. You wouldn’t be any help and would likely just slow me down. The female quickly turned away and jumped off of her perch, making her way away from her den at a run. If she couldn’t talk him away, perhaps she could lose him in the tall grass.

Rex’s ears and tail drooped at her reply. He nearly made to say something, to try and change her mind, but the female started to run off. He watched curiously for a moment before letting out a short, excited bark and chasing after her. Rex was not a slow dog, and though he didn’t catch up to her he was able to at least keep pace enough to stay within earshot. “Are we playing a game then? Will it be a running game? I like running as well!” He jumped happily in his stride, stumbling slightly upon landing but managing to keep moving. “I hope we still get to hunt something after the game!” By this time he had completely forgotten Deinocti’s insistent no that he could not come, too caught up in his excitement over the running.

Deinocti glanced over her shoulder and scowled at what she saw. She was being followed by none other then the wild dog that insisted on helping her hunt. She did not need help. She did not want help. And she did not want his help! Her pace quickened as she made her way across the plains, her tail in the wind and her ears back. This was no game to her as Deinocti was seriously trying to lose him either by outrunning him or from him getting bored.
"No, this isn't a game!"
A sigh escaped her mouth at his question of her running as a game. It was a game to him when it was more dire to her. She couldn’t trust him even if he was so...derpy. She couldn’t and she wouldn’t. Trust it what got her father killed and her brothers killed. She would run all day and night if she had too.

Rex’rhi continued to follow in his bouncy run, tail swishing from side to side and his gaze shifting from whatever lay around them, trees, rocks, or what have you, and the female ahead. He was not having a hard time keeping up, though she did gain slight ground on him here and there as his attention wandered.
Not a game? That must be part of the game! She was probably just trying to distract him, make him think it wasn’t a game. This was a fun game! “I like this game!” He barked happily at her. Rex was quite glad he had not only found another dog for company, but one that likedr unning games.
