It would be a day in late summer when the note would arrive. The envelope looked old with it's splotchy yellow coloring, yet the blood red wax seal was obviously fresh. The seal itself bore the mark of an ornate eye encased within a globe, the marking of the first demon, Avon. on the front was only one word written in an ornate script: Deskri.

Upon opening the envelope, the following letter was inside:

Dearest Deskri,

Dark days are upon us, as you are well aware. The humans slowly become more hostile to our kind and groups are beginning to form to take down the Academy itself. Those days are still far in the future for now, but it is time to take steps to delay this further.

There is an item that a group of humans have come into their possession called the Ring of Tenebrae, an artifact from before the Great War belonging to a very talented shaper of shadows and master of dark illusions. The leader of this group now bends shadows and illusions to their will, but because their human mind cannot technically handle the stress this places it puts upon them, is slowly going insane, and in turn slowly driving their followers mad as well.

How this pertains to you, as I know you are curious, is that the Ring of Tenebrae has been determined to be the artifact that you need to reach the level of Elder. If you are able to obtain this heightened level, we will not only have another Elder in our ranks to defend us from the radicals, but it will eliminate one of the more dangerous underground factions who wish to overtake us.

Your mission is to infiltrate 'Devil's Silhouette' , the faction ruled under the current owner of the Ring, as a new recruit. While masters of illusions and shadow, their tainted minds have a hard time seeing through illusions themselves. Get as close as you can to the Leader and take the Ring from them.

I know this seems dangerous, but it is important that you break down this faction from the inside, because if you do not, they can and will do heavy damage to the Academy. The vision is fuzzy currently, but I sense one of your family perishing by their hands if they are allowed to continue their training.

Those who wish to become members must go to the old newspaper offices on the edge of town. Be sure they do not discover that you are a Meta until you have the Ring of Tenebrae in your possession.

Good luck. I have utmost faith in you.

Yours,
Avon

All was well for Deskri. Something that was a trend lately, but still seemed alien to him. So when a suspicious looking letter with Avon's seal and his own name on it came, he was more that reluctant to open it.

In fact, Sonnet had to talk him into reading it. And it was a damn good thing the girls weren't around when he did, because his reaction went from apathetic to rampage of rage within a matter of moments after reading the bit about one of his family members possibly dying.

Deskri already held an extreme dislike for Avon, but this just took the cake. "THE VISION IS FUZZY, HE SAYS," he threw his hands up, pacing from one side of the bedroom to the other, "BUT ONE OF MY FAMILY MEMBERS IS GOING TO GET MURDERED? HOW DOES HE KNOW THIS IF IT'S ********' FUZZY!" The ranting continued on for a good half hour before he finally settled down. Well, Sonnet had gotten fed up and made him a cup of hot cocoa to shut him up, since it worked every other time.

Of course he was going to do it. There wasn't any other option, was there? He had never really thought about becoming an Elder, he honestly didn't care. All he was going to do was march on over there, kick some a**, get a stupid ring and come back. That was the plan.

None of this stupid infiltration bullshit, that took way too much time. If he was going to do this, he was going to do it his way. So he dressed in his most inconspicuous clothes, a simple black turtleneck and black skinny jeans, and headed out.

Avon must have known that he was going to do it, because the gate responded to his touch and opened for him without protest. He grumbled angrily to himself and stepped outside, immediately changing shape. There was no passing as a human with paper white skin, huge gold eyes, pointed ears and purple hair. That just wasn't going to happen. So his hair darkened to black, he gained enough pigment in his skin to be considered "alive," and his eyes turned a lovely shade of ice blue. He figured it wasn't that bad of a disguise, since Avon had made them sound like idiots.

The walk to the old newspaper offices was a long one. He didn't risk porting closer, other humans were considered enemies as well. It was strange how nice they were once they were given a lie to look at. Someone even offered him a ride, but he declined. No need to put himself into tight situations.

When he finally made it he stood outside awkwardly, staring in through one of the windows, searching for signs of life.

The building itself seemed okay by abandoned building standards. Not the best looking thing, but it looked safe to say the least. Everything seemed normal. Well, almost everything.

At the entryway of the building, there was a small child, so small that from the distance that Deskri was at he had a hard time noticing them at first. It was hard to tell the gender, but it looked no more older than Kindle or Altair, dressed in all black. They stood erect, as still as stone, the only movement really being the occasional breeze ruffling the long dark red hair.

Then, suddenly, the small child's head snapped quickly towards Deskri's direction, eyes seeming dull and lifeless. They tilted their head at Deskri, as if trying to portray a puzzled expression, but the blank expression made it look more creepy then anything else.

"Are you here to take the test?" a small voice asked softy, though it almost sounded like it was whispered right into Deskri's ear.

Deskri's head snapped in the direction of the child so fast he might have given himself whiplash. It was a good thing he was use to changing his appearance, otherwise the sudden "voice in his ear" would have caused his disguise to falter.

"Yes." He replied before he'd really gotten to think it over. Well, at least he said the right thing, but god... were they enrolling children? That was just one more thing to add to the pile of hatred for these humans. Corrupting small children, even if most of them were a pain in the a**, was just not cool.

[-prepares for inevitable Deskri a** kicking-]

Nothing seemed off to Deskri, though perhaps because of the sudden voice in his ear he wasn't really paying attention.

The child blinked at Deskri before shaking her head, then motioned him to follow. "Very good. Please come this way. We shall go to get you briefed on what your test shall be composed of," they said, and once again there was that whisper in the ear feeling.

The child opened the door, and other child, this one with shorter dull blond hair, took the first's place as guard. This one had the same black clothing and the same dull eyes. The one that Deskri first encountered kept the door open, waiting for Deskri to walk through.

Whatever it was that was distracting him, he didn't really seem to pick up on the fact that he was supposed to be paying attention to every little detail of his surroundings. Despite these humans having powers they wouldn't normally have, he was convinced that even if they did attack, he wouldn't have too much trouble disposing of them. That would probably be his downfall.

He stepped inside, cautiously, but not cautiously enough. These were just kids, right? "Lets get this over with, okay?" He grumbled in response to the first one.

The inside was much different then what the outside looked like. A bright cheerful blue painted the walls, the lights worked it seemed, even though there were no lighted windows from the outside. There were murals painted on top of the blue, scenes of carnivals and zoos and aquariums were seen in every direction.

But there was something off about this cheerful decor, and Deskri could see beyond this actually very well constructed illusion. The lights were still working, but illusions on the windows stopped them from showing in the outside. The cheerful blue was really a dull white, and where the murals were places was actually writing, some in black, some in red, but both seemed to be written in Sharpie.

The main thing he noticed though was the shadow of the child leading him down this hall. It extended farther then a shadow should be at this current lighting, and has his eyes followed to where it went, he came face to face with the source of the whispers right behind him.

It was composed of, well, shadowy colors, and looked like an adult version of the child, and because of this it could easily be seen that it was female. While having no eyes, a white smirk crossed her face.

"It's about time you noticed me. You are very unobservant," she chuckled before clamping a hand on his mouth before he said something stupid. "Don't let it hear you," she warned, nodding a head to the child. "Just keep walking. She can't hear me. If you whisper you'll be safe from her ears."

((Choices, ignore the shadow for the moment and read the writing, or ignore the writing and converse with the shadowy creature thing))

It really did take everything he had to keep his mouth shut. He knew he wasn't the best at observation, but seriously, did she need to say that? He looked around the room, momentarily ignoring the shadow to at least glance at the writing. He wasn't a very good whisperer, after all.

The best option seemed to be to think it over. He could always use his own shadow to communicate with this one, but that would be risky. Some new, potential recruit with enough control over the shadows to summon his own and communicate through it? Yeah, they'd catch on. So for the time being he decided to read the walls. The shadow could wait until the ears were gone.

The shadow could tell she was being ignored. She huffed, but let Deskri do whatever he wanted.

The writing overlapped each other, and there seemed to be more black than red. Terms like 'reversal' and 'run' were prominent and often repeated.
