Though I myself prefer white day, I still think it would be good to discuss valentine's day (since it is tomorrow!).

For those of you who don't know about Valentine's day in Japan, here is a quick explination:

On Valentine's day, women will give chocolates to men related to or are aquainted with. Usually, there are two types of chocolates given, the giri-choco, which are basically given to people like co-workers, bosses, and even males who you are turning down. Giri-choco is the chocolate you want to give to men you have no romantic interest in.

Honmei-choko, is more expensive (sometimes homemade) and is given to someone like your boyfriend, or husband, I have heard of it being refered as to the true love chocolate. (Though sometimes, the woman could also give a gift instead of chocolates) It's also really sad if a guy doesn't get chocolates, so you always have to keep guys you know in mind when giving giri-chocolates so they don't feel left out.

So what are your thoughts on Valentine's day in Japan??

Like Christmas, it's just another date holiday. Just like White Day. It feels very hollow to me (especially X-mas, I only spent one in Japan and it was.. nothing!).

I saw a documentary last year on V-day about a high school girl making chocolate for her boyfriend.. she calls over her two friends to make it at her house, then she meets her guy at a park. He's totally hosted out, if you know what I mean.. that big bleached hair, and his uniform looking like a bomb went off inside of it. She shyly (and sickeningly bashful at that) gives him the choco, he accepts it with as little lowly spoken grunts as possible, and afterward as he leaves for his baito she hollers repeatedly down the street as he walks away "EAT MY CHOCO EAT IT EAT IT OK!?" rolleyes

Yeaaaaahhhhh.... Japanese courting at it's unromantic finest.

Ahh, yeah, Valentines is really popular with high school girls. I still like the thought of giving people chocolate though, though I don't think I would be screaming to the person to eat it... sweatdrop

X-mas to me in Japan doesn't really fit with how christmas is in the U.S. In Japan, it's not christmas unless your eating KFC chicken.

KFC? I thought the meal on X-mas would be taking your date out to a very expensive restaurant and then going home to eat one of those too tiny bland X-mas cakes they try to pawn off as important..

That's one thing I hated, their cakes can't hold a candle to a Baskin Robbin's icecream cake.. American size at that.

Apr. 19th singles get together and eat Jyajangmyuhn noodles in black sauce. One of the best holidays I ever heard of.

I think I missed the date. But I am dressed for it.

Actually due to the time difference I missed telling meh Japanese girl happy Vallentines day on Vallentines day. And to make it worse, I didn't see her last night either. Oh well.

Anyway, I just know I'd end up giving chocolates out and get strange looks. I like giving out candy, but I am a guy. Despite the new hair, which scares me too thank you.

What is Valentine's Day, or White Day, to Japan anyway? What does it mean in Japan? Where and when did it come about and how??? confused Does it have any significant meaning???

Dazaemon, it's just like in the states, a holiday made for buying crap for a person you like.. but instead of cards, chocolate is king. o_O

Valentines in Japan is for women to give to men, and White Day on March 14th is for men to give to women. Only the Japanese would do something so silly.

Basically it's just a date day, and Japanese girls go overboard giddy about it. o_O

I don't know the history very well, but I know it started quite a number of years ago by chocolate companies. Just like Wisteria Darling said, it's only for marketing purposes to sell chocolates. Why I also referenced KFC chicken, around christmas time there are alot of commercials about how it completes christmas, ect, so people buy it for christmas. (At least, that's how I have seen it before.)

Holidays are just marketing strageties!

Well at least it appears that Valentine's Day never had any significant meaning to begin with. confused It has a meaning in the states, but they spend so much damn time exploiting it the real meaning of it is kinda starting to disappear... stare

it really doesn't matter. It's just another commercial holiday. Besides people who don't get anything hate the holiday anyway . Although the idea of making the chocolate sounds good and yummy
