'A most...unconventional astrolabe. It appears to be more of a charm than any sort of useful tool.'

Name: Neriedes {Neh-rreh-des}
Aliases: Neri {Neh-ree}

Height: --
Weight: 6 lbs
Family: --

Personality: --

Item History: Crafted by a specialist in Yirui and given to Uddunath as a gift at the very start of his voyages. Once originally bright and proud, despite it's buffering by sea winds, this unique astrolabe now has strange black splotches speckling its surface. It can no longer be dismantled, breaking tools or spraining hands, and refuses to be restored to its original shine.

User ImageName: Kalyan Ashwin Umesh
Aliases: Kalyan; Ash

Age: 26
Height: 6”5
Weight: 158 lbs
Build: A tall, gangly sort of thing with a slight hunch and lean muscle.

Marital Status: Single
Alliance: Panymese
Intended Faction: Council of Sciences

Current Region: Merrimead, Mishkan
Nationality: Imisese
Occupation: Helmsman Repairman, travel guide, navigator

Clothing: Kalyan is a simple man when it comes to his wardrobe, and doesn’t mind any particular style of clothing aside for the ones that are cheap. While his shirts are fairly loose and light, his jackets are large and hefty to keep him warm abroad- usually tailored to be fitted by his seamstress mother.

Family:
Lynnette Sancopa [Mother]
Elyse Aarushi Umesh [Sister]
Uddunath Umesh [Father, Deceased]

Personality: If you know him, he is Kalyan; if you don’t, Umesh. Only a select few call Kalyan by his middle name. At first glance, he is is very plain and serious. Even when he’s talking it seems like his face is almost imobile. Having to work for everyone but himself led Kalyan to have a touch of bitterness and a brash bite to everything he says- as much as he’d like it to be otherwise. But Kalyan has absolutely no problem interacting with people. In fact he enjoys it. Although he’s not the life of the party, he’s willing to walk up to a stranger in light of a simple conversation. Kalyan grew up in a city where people were dropping off like flies as the Black Death rose over Panymium. Many of his friends died off and as such the young man held on to everyone still left alive. If one becomes true friends with Kalyan it lasts for a lifetime. No matter how estranged or what grudge the friendship may turn to have, he remains loyal to the person in question. He’s been known to even bend the rules and/or perform a few petty crimes should a companion truly be in need.

Kalyan isn’t strictly a moral being. He does what’s needed for the sake of survival or owed favors so long as it isn’t hurting someone. His flexibility stretches across from what jobs he’ll do to the clothes he wears. He doesn’t tie down to specifically anything besides the technological.

He’s been taking apart and building up anything he could get his hands on since he was a child. He enjoys figuring out how things tick- where it came from and its history. Perhaps if he started off with different books, Kalyan might have been an engineer rather than a navigator on his travels- but his passion in origins and discovery far outweigh his interests and skill in the construction. He's developed a high tolerance for his close ones and his work. And only for those two; while he’s not terribly impatient, the sailor can be heedless and rash concerning anything else. He doesn’t like to dawdle, and would very much prefer if you didn’t slow him down. Meanwhile, any pent up anger would build up and whoever’s closest when he next boils over will be the unfortunate victim of his verbal outburst.

Having to care for a fading mother and an annoyingly loose sister, he’s independent and prefers not to ask for help. When it comes to needing directions, Kalyan is the pentacle of testosterone; navigation was his profession after all. If a situation goes bad or is somehow his fault, he owns up to it. But if Kalyan feels subjected to something he had no direct contact in, true or not, he’s relentless. He’ll flat out ignore you or the issue for as long as he can before anything gets violent. Don't let his thin appearance fool you: he's been in many brawls and skirmishes growing up and abroad with scars to tell. Once you’re on his bad side, he’s terribly condescending, and it will take a long while for him to change his opinion of you. It’s almost hypocritical, considering the crime he’ll forgive of those he considers his friends.

Being a navigator on failed journey has made him self-conscious about his skills and traveling again; though if you asked Kalyan he’d furiously deny it. Yet he grows weary of the mundane odd jobs/mechanics he has been performing lately, and wishes to move about once more. Umesh's current state of mind is a very torn one.

And if anyone ever likened him to his father concerning his current situation with his family, he’d react most uncharacteristically with a quick punch to the face. If there was a way to get to Kalyan, it's through his 'daddy issues'.

History: Kalyan’s father, Uddunath Umesh, was an islander from Yirui who constantly sought travel before the surge of the plague; most frequently to Ecara, Panymium, and Daelae. He wasn’t a man of any special importance or ranking, but a seaman turned tradesman who made a living buying and selling trinkets and spices from the various places he traversed.

Uddunath also not only enjoyed the sea, but myths, culture, and the women of the foreign lands. There was not a city that Uddunath had explored that didn’t have a beautiful woman waving him off for his next journey. His love for fairer sex was almost equal to that of his love for exploring the unknown.

Then one expedition led to Uddunath bedding a maiden from Panymium, with the next time he came around to finding the low class Imisese nursing a newborn boy. Kalyan would grow in a household where his father would visit all of three times a year; but when he did he always came with toys and just enough money to help get them by for the next few months. Beautiful as she was, Kalyan’s mother was a simple-minded seamstress. Born into a poor family with no type of connections or noble contracts, the income was low as the rest of their small community in Imisus. Uddunath's visits began to get few and far in between. They could only afford rags to be patched- and so their means began to dwindle.

Kalyan received no formal schooling, but became practiced reading from any book he had. Much of what was given to him were stories from his father of religious myths or manuals on ships, along with instruments that someone his age couldn’t fully comprehend. Kalyan became more tech savvy, and his interest in sailing to other lands was born. But after the birth of his younger sister, Elyse, his family’s struggle became that much harder, and Kalyan begrudgingly put himself to real work; child labor was not something uncommon in his world. He worked in multiple factories constructing everything from pots to cigarette holders. Although he never cared for his father’s absence before, it was then that a small ball of hatred for the man began to form. What good were his gifts and meager money if he left them constantly to fend for themselves?

His father was home for a regular visit when the ban on immigrant movement was implemented. He was not enough of a major trader to be considered an essential merchant to Panymium, and so Uddunath was locked within its borders. Uddunath finally became a permanent figure in Kalyan’s life.

Unfortunately by this time, Kalyan didn’t want him there.

The old man’s attitude and health drained away year after year, until the plague took him as it did their neighbors and friends. Kalyan became the sole provider for his family. Tired of sacrificing his own dreams of sea life that Uddunath had unknowingly bestowed upon him, the teenager became more adamant about his studies of seafaring.

With a surname decidedly Yiruian, trying land a position at sea on a worthwhile boat became increasingly difficult. Many ships decided it would be too much trouble having to deal with one of their workers constantly being questioned and/or under surveillance every time they passed a border.

Finally Kalyan was given a break- not because of his hard work and persistence that drove him to the docks every moment he got away from the factory- but because of a connection with his father. The captain of a well known merchant ship had recognized his last name and granted Kalyan a chance as a deckhand. Since then Kalyan had worked hard to move up the ranks across the years, becoming a helmsman on a trader ship that frequented Ardenth. He made more coin than his father, and was so close to the position of third mate he could practically taste it. Then it all went up in smoke as Ardenth cut its ties with Panymium. The ship sought trades elsewhere, battling pirates and choppy seas on new routes. One too many mishaps and a fatal meeting with old friend lead the sailor to be thrown ashore, his papers confiscated. Now that they were useless, Kalyan sold all of his navigational instruments in a fit of rage.

The King’s desperation and his admittance onto The Rosa was a god send; his old captain had sent for him. Even more so, he was offered a chance of promotion should everything go to plan. But now he had nothing to work with, as he sold all he had with the money traded for food and furnishing. Against Kalyan’s better judgment, he went to an old closet in the Umesh house which hadn’t been touched in years. He took out everything needed for his journey- including Uddunath’s precious astrolabe. Finally you are of some real use, Father.

After disaster struck on the ship, Kalyan was holed up in Mishkan with no funds for even the journey back home. He took on odd jobs as a lamplighter, craftsman for hire, and whatever else he could get. Even though he was the last rung on the ladder of livelihood in Merrimead, it was exponentially better than home and so he decided to stay. He sends money and letters to his family, and for some reason seems to be stalling on the move to return to Imisus.

For now, Kalyan speaks in saddle brown

{{ A Traveler's Desire }}

Uddunath was an explorer and collector of odds and ends. Whatever caught his interest in wherever he was traveling: he bought and sold the item in another city. But the Astrolabe is one of the sole items that the Uddunath kept for himself. It was an instrument created by a good friend from his home town in Yirui; a charm of sorts that served more of a purpose than just reading the sky. This was one of the man’s few true treasures and he cherished the reminder of home deeply, using it after every voyage to aid in the creation of his own personal map of Profugus.

When Uddunath was grounded in Imsis, he was torn. While he was not in love with their mother, he cared for his children deeply. He had visited when he could; brought them relics and toys. He knew he should have taken the new opportunity to truly know his son and daughter.

But everything in him screamed for sea.

Eventually his passover as a fisherman did nothing to cure his yearn freedom. There were many times when Uddunath thought of high jacking the boat and making a break for Yirui with what meager supplies were onboard. But the sea patrol was tight and Uddunath didn’t feel right robbing his co-workers their means of pay. It was a risk Uddunath didn’t take. Instead everyday he held onto his astrolabe and thought of Yirui and his travels.

A single man with hidden buboes would cause the slow deaths of all his crewmates. When it was discovered that one of their own was the source of the disease, Uddunath was the one that saved the man from a sooner death after being thrown overboard to drown. He’d felt alive again; risking his life against the ocean. As a reward for his kindness and bravado Kalyan’s father was subjected to the disease. His family kept him out of sight, holed up in his tiny room away from the public.

The day he died Uddunath asked for his son. He decided to pass on the precious treasure to his Kalyan as one last gift. His friend’s charm was not made to be kept with a rotting body, but to protect the living while traveling with water and sky. Kalyan refused, bitterly pointing out it would have no use as he had to spend his days providing for the family Uddunath was leaving behind. His father passed away with the instrument still gripped in his hands.
