The first day of September brought a new month, and a new chill in the wind. It was the start of days when parents woke up and shook kids awake excitedly. And when those same kids would roll over and groan , shutting off that stupid alarm clock. They would both be thinking the same thing
"Time for school."
Luckily for Castille, Meadowview didn't start for another week. But she still had to get up early, practically falling out of bed in a half asleep stupor. She dressed in her school uniform equal parts grudgingly and excitedly. Her parents had to take her to the school to sign up for classes. They all piled into the car while Kaylee complained that it was way too early to be awake.
Meadowview high school was abuzz with students and parents milling around. There were shouts of recognition from friends and parents alike. In the middle of it all a line was forming. The line entered into the school, where the students checked off their names from a list, and then into the gym where students were getting their id pictures taken. After that it filed through to the cafeteria, where tables had been set up along all of the walls with signs above saying what subject they were. Papers for students signing up for the class were monitored by teachers of that class. After the students were done signing up, they got their schedule approved and then outside in the courtyard there was an ice cream social!
Castille got in line while it was relatively small, and made it through the picture taking in no time. Her parents waited in the hall while she ran into the cafeteria with a schedule paper and requirements for graduation in hand in hand, looking about for the classes she might want to take. Sure she had to take math and science and all that. But her first priority was..
"Art!"
She found the line and quickly walked toward it. Art classes were often the first to fill.

Odette was thrilled that school was starting up, it meant that she would be able to learn--hopefully new--historical facts, and make new things in pottery class.
She hurried over to the art signup table and was so lost in her own thoughts, she bumped into Castille, jumping and seeming confused. "Oh gosh, I'm so sorry. I got so distracted..."
The girl smiled at the other and seemed eager to at least talk. "I'm Odette, it's nice to meet you!" Maybe this girl would be in her pottery class, it would be nice to have more friends.
After finding out she was some crazy super hero...she needed all the normal friends she could get.

The line was moving rather quickly, so Castille was quite confused when someone bumped into her. There's no way someone was that excited about art class!
She looked behind her, annoyance masked, to see a girl looking apologetic. Her anger evaporated immediately when she realized that this girl meant no harm. And among the milling of students, it was nice to see someone acting human.
"I'm Castille Brenna." She said, smiling warmly back at the girl....
Who had a hairstyle very similar to hers.
Her smile widened, and she said "I like your hairstyle! It's very cute!'

Odette gave a smile, reaching up to make sure her loops were still in place.
"Thanks! I really like yours as well! What class are you signing up for?" How lucky to have bumped into another friendly person.
"Are you ready for school to start up? I can't believe how quickly summer passed! It was like a blink, wasn't it?"
She stretched then moved forward as the line surged. Yeah, completely like a blink.

"Thank you!" She said, smiling widely. "I'm signing up for advanced digital photography. Maybe the normal art class too. I haven't decided yet." Two art classes would certainly make her school schedule easier. And after the summer she had, and the new moonlight job she attained, an easy schedule is one to be appreciated.
"I think I'm ready for school to start so I have something to do during the day." she said, writing her names on the list when her turn came up. "But then when the first day comes, I grumble about how early I have to get up!" Like today.
"What classes are you thinking about?"

Odette gave a smile. "Pottery, always, always pottery. I love the class...it's my absolute favorite. I think clay is the most wonderful compound on the planet!"
She laughed at herself then nodded. "Photography...is that fun? I've never really tried it out...maybe I should."
It was always fun to try new things, just like it was fun to meet new people. Maybe that's what she had to do. "I think I will sign up for it. I can see how I'll do with it. Do you think maybe we can go and take photos together? That sounds like it would be fun."

Her enthusiasm matched Castille's own happiness. Someone who was like her in bubbliness didn't come about often. Her grin widened when Odette decided to sign up for photography as well. "Photography is the best!" She said, watching the girl write her name. "It's really easy in some ways. Like, you can take a picture of anything, and call it art, and there isn't anyone who can tell you it's not." She paused, then bent down and hurriedly scribbled her name onto the pottery list. She flashed Odette another smile and said "If your gonna try something new, then so will I!"
Next on her list was Math. Ugh. "I'm signing up for Math next. If you don't have another class to fight for, or if you gotta too then we can go together! And as for taking pictures together, that's a definite yes! Sometimes taking pictures is lonely by yourself."
Lookit her, makin new friends! Her parents would be proud if they could see her. But they were busy eating icecream with other parents and talking about how much school was costing them these days.

Odette nodded, signing up for Math with the other girl. “Ah, I hate Math…it’s my least favorite subject. It’ll be nice to have a friend to help study with me. Thanks!” She laughed then stretched. “What are you doing later today? Do you want to hang out maybe?”
She seemed almost shy in asking, but seemed excited and hopeful to hear a yes. “We can go to the art supply store…I have my own pottery wheel and kiln at home, maybe you could start practicing?” Odette hadn’t expected class signups to get her a friend, but she was pleased. It was about time she got someone else to hang out with, someone to laugh and share things with.
There was just something about Castille that she found fun. Like she knew the girl from somewhere, or something silly like that.

Castille practically jumped up and down. "I can't STAND math!" She exclaimed, clasping her hands together. "Are you sure your not my sister or something?" She said with mock suspicion.
Art store? Sounded like a plan. Castille was running low on colored pencils anyway, but kept putting off traveling downtown to go get them. Now with another person, maybe it wouldn't be as tedious. "I actually need to go to the art supply store." she said, scratching math into her schedule in her hand. There was one more class she needed to sign up for, and then she would be free. Assuming her parents were ok with just leaving her here to go to the store. She could always take the bus back.
"Lemme just run over and sign up for english, and then I'll be set!" she said, skipping over to the practically empty table. She scribbled in her name, and finished her handheld schedule, then walked back over to Odette.
"Are your parents outside waiting for you too?"

She nodded. "Yeah. My mom's outside waiting. It was really cool to meet someone here, Castille! I normally don't meet anyone at class signups...usually...I hate coming to these things! It always just seems like such a waste of time, you know?"
Odette held her own schedule in her hand, smiling almost from ear to ear. "I'm ready if you are, my mom'll let me go, I know she will. Wanna go ask her and your parents, then we can go to the store!"
Best start of the school year ever. Bar none. She got to pick her own classes, and she met someone. She would have to let her mom know to let her do things on her own more often.

Castille nodded, folding her own schedule and putting it in her pocket. This had to be the best class signups she'd ever been to!
"I'll go find my parents and ask them. Then we can leave!" she skipped to the door, pressing it open and searching for her parents. They were off to the side talking to her friend Molly's mom and dad. She ran over to them.
This looked like the start to an awesome school year!

Odette just grinned, running to her own mom, laughing and telling her all about her new friend—well, as much as she could tell in a minute and a half. School was going to be completely amazing, and she couldn’t wait! She ran back over to Castille and linked arms with her. “Are you ready? Let’s head out!”
As the two girls walked off, Odette gave a little laugh, she was finally really, really excited about more then history and pottery in school…who would have thought?
