Quest Name: The Goblin King
Quest Giver: The Mage's Guild
Location(s): Although this quest is given by the Arcane University, characters do not have to start there. Characters will meet up at the Mage's Guild in Skingrad. From there, together they will travel north until they reach their destination, Goblin Jim's cave. Goblin Jim's Cave is inhabited by goblins. When the task is done, Mage's will return to the Arcane University and report to the Council where they will receive payment and promotion.
Information: Rastian Marlones is an older accomplished wizard, in his late fifties, early sixties. He used to be a professor at the Arcane University but took a leave of teaching to pursue unspecified research. He left the Arcane University seven months ago and although he had kept in contact, in the past two months no word from him has been heard. Recently however The University has received word of Malones' last known location. It is a well known Goblin area and there is concern that he has been kidnapped, or worse, killed.
This is partially the truth. Marlones' research did bring him too close to Goblin territory and he has indeed been kidnapped. He was however, tricked. His research brought him into contact with a mage of questionable intentions, and that mage lured him into a trap which has resulted in Marlones' capture by Goblins. This other mysterious mage is actually in possession of a strange mystical shaman staff that has allowed him to become the Goblins leader! He is the object of the goblins worship and is performing cruel tests on Marlones', trying to figure out how the staff can make humans worship him, and not just Goblins. Characters will likely find this other mage unwilling to negotiate as he is 'a little off his rocker'. He could be described as insane, bordering on maniacal. This wizard must be forced to remove his magical hold over the Goblins and return peacefully to the Arcane University, OR he must be eliminated.
Once characters have found and rescued Marlones, he will tell them that there is one thing they must help him get before he will leave the cave and return to the Arcane University. Once that item is recovered and the evil wizard is destroyed everyone can return to the Arcane University!
Expected Resistance: There will be a tribe of Goblins to contend with as well as some wilds animals. Potentially characters may have to fight a powerful wizard. This could result in conjured creatures and/or undead.
Goal(s): Characters are to locate Rastian Marlones in Goblin Jim's cave (first zone) and return him to the Council of Mage's at the Arcane University. Lack of bloodshed is preferable but not required. A bonus will be given if Marlones is returned alive and well.
Treasure Type & Amount: 350g per character will be received by the Mage's Guild upon successful completion of the quest, as will advancement in the guild ranks. Various loot will be up for grabs at the end as well. A 100g bonus will be given to each member if Marlones is kept alive and returned to the University in that state. Death or a serious injury will cancel any possible bonus.
Other: Please note: Here is a map of the cave. We will only be using the first zone: Goblin Jim's cave.
For alchemy gatherers, the fauna located within Goblin Jim's cave is limited to Cairn Bolente & Whisp Stalk plants. Outside the cave entrance however the following plants can be found and harvested: 16 Alkanet plants, 5 Columbine plants, 21 Flax plants, 3 Fly Amanita plants, 3 Lady's Smock plants, 12 Motherwort plants, 1 Nightshade plant, 8 Peony plants, and 2 Viper's Bugloss plants.
