Hel was apparently a glutton for punishment when it came to trying to read a book and study it!

The valkyrie was sitting in the library again trying to master the ‘art’ of studying. The ghoul was going about it completely the wrong way, but she didn’t know any better. She tried to approach reading like she approached a sparring opponent: head on and with brute force! It obviously wasn’t working out for her (yet again), as a dark brow twitched repeatedly as her patience rapidly dwindled. She flipped a page. Microwaves. Microwaves were created in…uh…microwaves were made by…

She was done.

Hel placed both of her hands underneath the hard cover and flipped the book across the table, grinning like a Cheshire cat as she heard the resounding THUD of the book hit the other end of the table.

Sparrow was attempting to be productive.

It wasn't working.

For about the fourth time that morning he took the book in his hands and slammed it shut, an exasperated look on his face. He did not particularly care about reading at the current moment, especially since the words were just not connecting inside of his brain. He'd read the second sentence about five times before realizing that it still made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

And, considering that the sentence was "He read the book," Sparrow felt it quite time to stop for the time being.

Leaning back in his chair, he put his feet up, linked his fingers behind his head, and and closed his eyes, debating a small nap.

THUD.

He opened his eyes again.

At the table in front of him sat a ghoul who seemed just as determined not to study as he was, her book halfway across the table from her as a satisfied grin crossed her face.

Sparrow knew that feeling quite well.

"You giving up on reading too?" he asked her pleasantly.

In reality, flipping the book down the table wasn’t productive in the slightest. But the satisfaction she received from doing that and getting the book out of her face was so worth it right now. Hel tossed her arms above her head, stretching, and cracked a shoulder before pausing when it seemed she was being addressed. The reaper looked over at the table next to her, catching sight of a boil that had the right idea. Relaxing in the library, that’s all it was good for at this point, or so she thought.

She grinned at him cheerfully. “Oh no, friend, not giving up! That would imply I’m letting it win!” She shot said book a dirty look. “I’m just recollecting my forces before I engage it in battle again.” Hel nodded her head firmly, crossing her arms as if this was a very wise choice.

The reaper looked back over at Sparrow, smiling. “I have better things to be doing, anyways! Like training! How about you?”

Her answer was quite the one that would interest Sparrow Heartreed - cheeky, cheerful, and truthful. He could feel a grin tug his lips upwards.

"So true, so true," he said with a sigh, leaning back and crossing one ankle over the other. "And we can't have them winning can we? That would simply not do."

Eyebrows lifting, Sparrow took in the ghoul across from him. If he didn't know any better he would have said she was just like him - a reaper, except that there were some slight differences that made him question his first belief. Her face was split in two, a line down the middle with half being dark, the other light, which was curious, though not unpleasant. Rather, it made her look quite impressive in a way.

He tilted his head. "Training for what, might I ask?" he replied with a smile. "I rather like that idea myself. Or maybe I could be off on some grand adventure."

A pause. "Though what grand adventure, I'm not entirely certain."

Ah, yes, someone who understood! Hel was instantly liking this boil already. “No, not at all!” The ghoul agreed, leaping out of her seat and stretching.

The valkyrie then oh so nicely invited herself over to the table that Sparrow was at and took a seat next to him. She leaned forward, eager to carry on the conversation with him. “Training for battle, of course! Sparring, weapon wielding, running, jumping, flying!” She listed these things off excitedly, and looked rather intrigued at the mention of a grand adventure. Oh yeah, she definitely liked how this boil thought! She grinned back at him in return. “Anything can be a grand adventure if you set your mind to it!”

Here she held out a dark hand to him. “My name is Hel!”

She was a curious sort, Sparrow observed, as he lifted his gaze to watch the ghoul as she crossed around to his side of the table, propping her chin up in her hands and looking up at him with expectant eyes. An excitable sort, easily entertained and always ready to do something; a personality that Sparrow rather liked.

"Ahhh, yes, I see," he replied, his eyes twinkling with mischief as he nodded, reaching a hand up to idly rub his gloved fingers against his chin. "I must admit, I do rather find those things enjoyable - the weapon wielding, at least, seeing as how I am a reaper and do, in fact, carry a weapon with me at all times."

His brows rose, slightly surprised, but then Sparrow's expression relaxed into one of pure amusement. "Yes, I do agree," he said, smiling. "I do believe I will have to turn the next mundane thing I do into an adventure; it should make things quite a bit more interesting."

She - Hel - had stuck out her hand to him, and Sparrow took it with gusto, giving her a firm shake.

"Sparrow," he said. "My name is Sparrow Heartreed. A pleasure, Hel."

Hel gave a short laugh when Sparrow informed her that he was a reaper. Well, it seemed pretty obvious to her, and didn’t he know she was one too? It didn’t occur to her that maybe she could throw some students for a loop based on her appearance, but ah, that was what happened when you assumed that others just knew. “I figured!” Hel replied with a vigorous nod of her head. “What kind of weapon do you wield, friend? Mine is a spear that is taller than even you!”

A grinned reappeared back on her lips as the reaper commented about turning the next mundane thing into an adventure. Her fair hand raised, and made a spinning motion, indicating the library they were currently in. “I think we should start a grand adventure right now, and the first step of our journey will be escaping.” She shook his hand firmly, rather impressed by the gusto with which he took hers, and gave another nod of her head. “The pleasure is all mine, Sparrow!”

"Ah, you are one as well, I see," said Sparrow in delight, leaning back at his chair and appraising Hel with a sort of pleased expression on his face. "I do enjoy meeting other reapers. I myself use a shadow scythe," he continued, and shook his hand as though there were something on it. A few tendrils of smoke curled up from his palm, the beginnings of the scythe starting to form.

"It's a rather enjoyable weapon," Sparrow said, and flicked his hand again. The smoke dissipated quickly, along with the half formed scythe, and he smiled brightly at the other ghoul. "I've never met a spear user, however - I'd enjoy seeing you wield it one day."

"And my scythe is admittedly taller than I am as well," he added with a small laugh, shaking his head. He was finding he was liking Hel more and more - a ghoul who thought along the same lines as he did.

A broad smile crossed his lips. "I couldn't agree more; where shall we escape to?"

Indeed I am! I am a valkyrie!” The reaper replied proudly with a broad grin. “I do as well! I have met quite a few already since my arrival here at the Academy.” Sparrow was another pleasant one to add to the list! “A shadow scythe?” She echoed curiously, leaning forward with interest as the smoke tendrils started to curl around his palm. She could see the start of a scythe but was disappointed once he dismissed it. Ah well, they couldn’t exactly be summoning their weapons in the library, huh?

Well, if we get out of here, we’ll be able to properly show them off, eh?” Hel’s gaze snapped to the door, and then back at Sparrow as she leapt up from her seat. “Where ever our feet carry us, friend, let’s go!” The reaper was grinning widely then as she took off, making a beeline for the door. Hopefully her new friend was right behind her! Once she was outside the lirbrary, Hel paused, waiting for Sparrow to catch up. "Left or right?" She called out once he was close enough.

"A valkyrie?" Sparrow repeated, eyes growing wide. "I've never met one of your kind before. How very interesting!"

It was not exaggerated, either; for someone who loved learning and thoroughly enjoyed discovering new things about anything and everything he could, Sparrow was quite curious about Hel and her kind. But it would be difficult to do anything here in the library, after all.

Which was why he was so grateful when the ghoul stood, gesturing towards the exit.

"A perfect idea," he answered, and swept after her, pleased and excited as he tagged down the hall after her. Once he reached Hel, Sparrow glanced back and forth, a scrutinizing expression on his face.

"Left," he said decidedly. "It seems a good place to start."

Ah, I like the way you think, friend!” Hel cheered, shooting a grin back at the grim reaper. “Left it is!” Now that they had escaped the suffocating clutches of the library, the ghoul was content to just walk at a brisk pace for now, rather interested in getting to know more about the reaper beside her.

You know, I hear that a lot! Many around here never have encountered valkyries before. Heh.” Hel brushed her thumb across her nose. “I am the youngest of nine valkyrie sisters.” The reaper informed. “We live in a rural area that is a day’s train ride away from the Academy…but the land where home is, there are many valkyries there.” The ghoul’s arms swung back and forth as they walked, and she looked back up at her new companion for the time. “What about you friend, where and what is it you call home?”
PostPosted: Mon Nov 14, 2011 4:08 pm

Sparrow meandered around behind Hel, sliding up to fall into step beside her instead.

"I find valkyries are a bit more uncommon, perhaps, than the rest of the reapers?" said Sparrow, with a shrug, and then his eyes widened in surprise. "Nine sisters?" he repeated, staring at her. Then he smiled, shaking his head in awe. "I can't even imagine having that many ghouls in my house."

He stuck his hands in his pockets and smiled widely. "I myself have a sister and two brothers," he said. "One sister and one brother are older, while the last is younger than I am. She's around twelve. I'm from not too far around here - it's only a few hours ride on the train from here."

Tilting his head, Sparrow slanted a smile down at Hel. "Are you the only one of your family to attend the Academy, then?"

The reaper gave a thoughtful hum at Sparrow’s observation. “…Ah…you know, that is a good point friend!” Hel blinked as she suddenly seemed to realize that she was the only valkyrie on campus right now. Wow. Hel gave a laugh and nodded her head. “Yes, and my papa is the only male in my home, along with my sisters and my mama.”

She seemed very eager to know about Sparrow’s family, grinning a bit. “Ah, you have siblings too!” Hel cheered. “Almost everyone I’ve spoken to is an only child…I can not even begin to grasp that feeling.” The youngest with eight older sisters, and then trying to imagine being the only child? She couldn’t even begin to imagine it. “Yes, I am the only one from my family to attend the Academy!” Hel seemed very proud of this fact. “The first as well! What about your siblings? Have they attended, are they going to attend?”
PostPosted: Tue Nov 29, 2011 8:07 am

"I'm sure your papa must have a lot of fun, then," said Sparrow with a laugh, shaking his head. "The only male in a house full of ten women? He'll be as well-versed as any man on the antics of females, wouldn't you say?"

The words were said teasingly, without any sort of ill-intentions meant behind them. He gave Hel a bright smile, and nodded.

"I have my two older siblings; they act as though they're twins, though they're not. They graduated from the Academy several years back. And my little sister is rather spoiled, considering the age difference, but she's quite a treat."

Thinking of his family made a light flush of pink dust across Sparrow's cheeks. He missed them a great deal, especially his youngest sister, but being at school was what he had wanted, and he was happy to be here.

"I could not imagine," he agreed, nodding. "I grew up with my family as they are and I wish for nothing else."

A slight pause. "Except for maybe my youngest sister to attend here."

Hel laughed as well. “Oh yes, plenty of fun! Only when he can manage to slip a word in at a table full of gabbing ghouls.” The reaper gave a firm nod of her head. Talking about home gave her a fond feeling…

She listened to him speak of his family, and she could note the fondness he shared for them as well. Being home…that was familiar, comforting in a way. Being here? Utterly different. Hel was getting use to this foreign concept of being alone. In the sense that there was no one hovering over her shoulder to see what was going on or what should be getting done. She gave a wide smile to the grim reaper, and then tilted her head curiously. They seemed to have made it outside now, and Hel just let her feet lead them around on a path.

Ah…with how young she is, we might have graduated by the time she became enrolled, eh? How unfortunate…” The ghoul hummed thoughtfully, moving her fingers to link behind her head as she walked. “…Ah well…it happens, ya? Will you be returning home during breaks?”
