Weapons were awesome. Robert had infinitely bad luck with wielding any weaponry as a hunter so far, but this time they were telling them to find a weapon that was all his. He would make some connection, or something - really, he wasn't listening very well. All he knew was weapon and his. He was down those stairs and in front of those runes in mere moments, having taken steps three at a time. Of course, runes were not weapons, so the sight of them disappointed him. He sighed deeply, staring at the walls.
"All right. Where's the second passage switch that turns this damn room into an armory?" He snapped out at the empty room, as his hands started raking the walls looking for it. Every time he passed a rune, he felt a painful buzzing that made him want to pull away, but he was determined. This was just a tactic to keep him from finding the goods! He wasn't gonna fall for it!
His nails tried to find hidden crevices, but all he heard - and felt - were anger and disapproval.
"Come on.. come on.. you're around here somewhere.." He whispered, brushing his fingers against a rune that kind of reminded him of broken wings. They looked like they were cracked right in half - it was kind of ugly, really. He didn't know why he had stopped to look at that particular rune, out of all of them, when it was so creepy.
You think I'm ugly.
The rune glowed at his touch, and Robert snapped his hand back. "Oh s**t what, what just-"
You think I'm ugly, and useless, don't you? You hate me, you won't save me, you don't want me. I can't blame you..
Seriously, was that rune crying? Robert thought he was losing his mind, and there wasn't much to lose in the first place. "Hey, look, I said no such thing. Besides, you're a wall, what the ******** do I know about walls? In wall-terms, maybe you're the most beautiful wall in the world."
There was a soft sigh, and everything went silent again. Out of sheer stupidity curiosity, Robert reached out and touched the rune again, and his fingers made it glow. He ran the meat of his pointer finger against the etchings, and the sigh returned.
I didn't ask for this, you know.
Robert did not pull away, this time. The compulsion to brush his fingers against the rune was instinctive. He couldn't stop. "Ask for what?"
I had a life. At least I thought I did. Maybe I didn't. Maybe this is where I belong. What I deserve. I don't know.
"Hey, listen, wall. You ain't making a lick of sense-"
Jezebel.
"Say what now?"
That's my name, silly. Jezebel. I'm yours, if you want me.
Robert dug his nails in to the side of the rune, and pulled it out of the wall. In his hands, the rune melted and shifted, lengthening until it was almost as tall as him - and he pulled it away just as the blades sharpened in front of his very eyes, to keep from slicing himself by mistake.
When she was done, Robert gave the weapon a good, long look, and smiled. "Oi." He murmured quietly. "I remember you. And you know what? You ain't ugly at all. You're beautiful. Don't go letting anyone else tell you any different."
He was trying to comfort a weapon. He knew it was stupid, and he knew he kind of looked crazy doing it, but that weapon was a girl, and that girl was sad. He couldn't blame her - being trapped in a weapon had to suck.
"I'm Robert, sweetheart. You and me, we're gonna be real good pals."
The weapon was silent. He couldn't tell if this pleased her or not, so instead he took the time to check out the sweet details etched on it's surface, and turned it around to check out the other bladed side.
"You're like that thing the Klingon's use, damn! That is so badass-"
OH, NOW you think I'm badass, you stupid p***k. Nice job. First you insult me, then you decide to take me out for a spin, and now you're saying I look like I'm from the stars? Is that where this is going? Maybe you should put me back where you found me, you rancid human. I can smell you from here, my JACK. Do you even BATHE?
Robert's head slowly leaned back as he stared at what was once a soft spoken, gentle voiced weapon - but now was ripping him a new a*****e.
She'd rendered him speechless. He could tell she was smug about it.
"I, uh. What."
Wow, that was intelligent. Are you always this smooth of a talker? Seriously, just impale yourself on me right now. Do us both a favor.
"Now hold on a second, I don't know what the ******** crawled up your panties, but-" Robert flipped the blade around, holding it the way he'd found it, and heard the poor thing whimper.
I'm sorry. I'm so sorry! I'm just mad, okay? Her voice had sweetened considerably, but it was still her. And Robert was thrown for another loop. I don't.. I don't like being used. I miss home. I miss everything. I didn't mean to snap at you. Just please don't yell at me anymore..
"Holy hell." Robert grumbled, letting the weapon rest on his shoulder, and making sure he kept it right side up as he walked out of the Cove. "Like I really needed a weapon that PMS's if you shake it the wrong way."
He heard another whimper, and winced at his callousness. This was going to be a difficult arrangement. And to think, he was so excited when he'd woken up that morning, because as far as he knew, all he was getting was a new weapon.
Not a new relationship.
