Being long haired had a lot of perks. It was absolutely gorgeous first off, elegant and lovely. It felt wonderful to be brushed and rustled. It also provided a pretty nice padding against attacks on the rare occassions she actually got into a scuffle.
Unfortunately.. for all the good it was it did have one major flaw. In the summer it was SO stinking hot.
For much of the summer Dahlia had been taking refuge in any clean water source she could find. In the city that meant fountains for the most part, but her little swim was often disturbed by people. A little discovery in the suburbs though had offered an interesting new option.
Tiny colorful pools of water littered the front and back yards of many houses. Often times children could be seen playing in them, but every once in awhile she'd find a free one and soak herself for a while.
It was a little past noon as the creamy white cat padded through the chest high water, letting her tail sink into the water, soaking up the coolness of the water even as she sun baked down from up above. A soft purr rattled through her as she got comfortable. Ahhhhhh...

It was HOT. The end of August brought a heat wave that kept Minny inside the air conditioned house while her mother braved the scorching weather to tend to the garden. At this rate, some of the more delicate veggies might wilt, and Minny stared out of one of her bedroom windows, the one that overlooked the garden. Her mother was busy filling the tiny valleys between the rows of carrots and potatoes with water from the hose.
The hose.....
Minny pushed her window open, shouting "Hey ma! Will you fill up my swimming pool?" Her mother looked up and smiled, shouting back "Yes I can do that! Give me a few minutes ok?"
Those few minutes were spent frantically throwing her clothes around, looking for her favorite swim suit. When she finally located it, her mother was already inside, and she called up the stairs "The pool is filled!"
"Thanks ma!" She called, tearing off her clothes to change into the blue and white striped one piece swim suit. Then it was only a matter of sprinting down the stairs to the bathroom closet to grab a towel and she was out the door making her way rapidly toward the pool..
..But someone had beat her to it. Actually, a something. A cat was almost submerged in the pool, dreamy look in it's eyes. She skidded to a stop, studying the creature. Where did this cat come from? Minny was sure she knew all of the neighboring pets, and she definitely didn't look anything like them

How she'd missed the mother and popped in just between the time of the pool being filled and it's owner coming to swim in it, was surely nothing but extreme luck. She was too busy enjoying how crisply and wonderfully cool the little pool had been compared to the day outside and anything else she'd been in lately. Dahlia hardly noticed the girl when she made her approach, only pausing when suddenly a shadow crossed her path.
Dual colored eyes lifted upwards, ears perked curiously forward in case she needed to be making a quick exit. Only the source of the shadow was something far from intimidating, in fact.. it was pretty darn adorable.
Some children could be monsters. Hair and tail pullers. Too rough and tumble and deserving of a pawful of claws. This one though...? Only time would tell, she looked harmless enough in her bright little bathing suit.
Being wet and soggy, Dahlia didn't look quite as lovely or elegant as usual, but she did her best nonetheless, drippy tail lifting into the air softly, head cocking just a little as she let loose a soft and delicate "Mew".
She was just beginning to cool down! Hopefully she wasn't about to be run off.

A KITTY!
Minny's eyes widened as a smile grew across her face, showing two rows of perfect teeth. She cautiously walked over to the edge of the pool, taking care to avoid leaning on the edge of it and spilling out the water. But she thought cats hated water? What was this one doing?
Judging by the mass of swirling hair in the water, she was a very furry kitty. Maybe she was hot? She supposed she could share her pool with a poor hot kitty.
The tiny cry from the cat was enough to make her gasp a soft "Awwww." before reaching out to pet it's halfway wet head. "Hello kitty cat." She said, stroking by one of her ears "What are you doing in my pool? Are you hot?"
She had two different colored eyes! Minny blinked a couple times, and squealed. "Oh but your eyes are so preeeeettty! How did you get two different color eyes?" She sighed, tossing her towel away from the pool and possible splash zone.
She put a foot in the pool, shivering as the icy water made her legs break out in goosebumps. "You don't mind if I join you right? I sure hope not. The pool is small, but I think it can fit a little girl and a pretty kitty." She talked to the cat as if it could talk back, but didn't leave enough time in between for it to respond even if it could.

It seemed she'd lucked out! As charmed as Minny was with her mew, Dahlia was equally taken with the Awww, going so far as to perch up on her back feet for a moment, inviting the girl to pet her.
She gave a few more happy murrs and classically kitty noises as she girl chattered away, slowly stepping into the pool. Yes she was hot, so very hot. And her eyes, they WERE lovely weren't they? Thanks so much for noticing. Of course she wouldn't mind sharing the pool with someone so complimentary.
Really she was just DYING to talk. But there was no way this little girl was negaverse or senshi... and so she was left silent. Just as she'd been with Falco. So frusterating, she couldn't possibly risk it.
Except... What WAS she really risking..? This girl seemed young enough... if she mentioned a talking cat to her parents or someone they'd probably just wave it away as the delusions and imagination of a child.
She scanned around the pool lightly, making sure noone else was in earshot or anywhere near before she opened her mouth, and a very different sound came out.
"Is this your pool? I am very hot and would like to stay if you don't mind."
Her whiskers twitched mischeviously, waiting to see how the girl would take it.

She had lowered herself into the water, feeling the cool water in contradiction to the hot sun roasting her shoulders. She almost didn't hear the cat talk..
Wait.
The cat talked!?
She sat up suddenly, sending ripples through the pool. Staring down at the cat, who stared back like she knew this sort of reaction would occur, Minny was confused. Cats don't talk. Cats can't talk. But looking down at this cat with the two different colored eyes, she suddenly wasn't sure. She was sure it had spoken.
"Did...did you just talk?" She asked, voice shaking with equal parts nerves and excitement. If she found a talking cat! That would be amazing!

Dahlia stiffened a little as the rippling waves suddenly rushed towards her, though thankfully they were tiny, simply swishing her long hair around her more. Her whiskers wiggled a little to try and rid the couple of drops of water that had come to cling onto them.
"Shhhh" She warned softly, not particularly wanting anyone else to show up. If they did she would have to be quiet and she'd barely just began!
"I would like to talk to you but I'm very shy. I won't do it if there are lots of people around" The creamy cat insisted with one of her sweetest little faces.

Minny nodded eagerly, covering her mouth with her hands in a dramatic show of comprehension. The kitty really did talk! How great was this!?
After a moment, she leaned closer, putting her hands in the water to stabilize herself against the bottom of the pool. "Where did you learn to talk?" She practically whispered to the cream colored cat, and it was then she noticed two more odd things about her.
One; she was wearing clothing. Not in the sense of a human, like a jacket or anything. But she wore an elaborate something around her neck, held in place with a star clasp.
Two; that star clasp matched the star on the cat's head.
"Why do you have a star on your head? She asked, pointing at the black shimmering gem-like thing in the middle of her forehead.

Good good. Dahlia was happy to see the girl understood, going so far as to laugh a little pleasantly as Minny covered her mouth. What a little darling.
Her question received an amused murr, the tip of her tail wiggling around like a snake in the water. "Probably the same place as you silly. From my mom and dad when I was just a kitten."
The second question was a little bit of a surprise however, her brow rising for a moment before she lifted her head a little closer, offering her forehead for inspection. "It's a marking I was born with. The fur is a little shorter there, but it's there. Want to feel?" If she felt she would see that it indeed was furred, like those soft velvet stickers you could sometimes buy. Regardless it was obviously a part of the cat, not just a decoration like the necklace.
She waited, hoping that from her forehead the little girl's hand might travel elsewhere, perhaps to scratch her ears or stroke her back.
"What's your name honey? I'm Dahlia."

Minny reached out, stroking the star. It was indeed furry, and her delighted in touching it. Her hand ventured to the rest of her head, and her loose fur stuck to her hand as she stroked by her ears. She rinsed her hand in the water, and shook it thoroughly before returning it to her head.
"So you learned to talk from your mommy? Where did they learn to talk? All the cats I've ever met don't talk." The cat didn't feel different. Minny expected there to be some magical aura or something. She wondered if dogs could to the same thing. Or birds.
The next dog she met would get a talking to.
"My name is Minny!" She exclaimed, grinning broadly. "I'm 9!"

For all her petting and stroking, Minny received a soft rumbling purr from the cat, contented, pleased.
The little girl was curious, and pretty clever too for as young as she was. Dahlia was more amused then annoyed however, a soft smile of sorts visable on her maw. "You probably just never ran across one that had anything interesting to say. It's a pretty well kept secret. I like to break the rules sometimes though.. just a little."
"Minny" The name was purred out affectionately, the cat shifting in the water once more to let the water slide back over her back. "That's a cute name. You're very cute."
"Do you like to swim too? It's one of my favorite things"

She blushed at the compliment, smiling happily. "Thank you. But I'm not as cute as a fluffy cat!"
Dahlia brought up an interesting point. If she had never run into a cat that had something interesting to say...."So all cats can talk, but most of them don't like to talk to people?" she ventured, lowering her petting to her furry shoulder blades.
"I love swimming." she went on to say, creating ripples as she kicked her feet in the water. She wished that they had a bigger pool, but her Dad said that big pools were big leaf traps, and he didn't have the time or patience to spend afternoon after afternoon chasing oak leaves around the water's edge. So she settled with pretending to swim in her plastic pool until she was old enough to have her own house and her own big pool.
"This pool isn't really big enough to swim in though." She said, voicing some of her thought process. "But the city pool is much bigger! Sometimes we go there."
"I didn't know that cats liked to swim!"

Well.. granted. Cats WERE cuter and lovelier than humans at most times. And Dahlia herself... well she was obviously far above most in that regard. But for a human and a little girl, Minny sure landed towards the tops of cuteness.. especially after that little comment!
"Mhmmmm. That's right." She nodded in agreement to the bit of logic, happy to have put the tricky little answer behind them.
If she'd been a regular 'non water loving' cat she might have shied away from the ripples that the enthusiastic girl began to produce. But as a fellow water lover... Dahlia couldn't help but laugh a little softly, batting playfully at the small ripples as they rushed towards her.
"The pool is a little shallow, but it's still nice on a hot day."
"I'm smaller so I can swim in the fountains at the park alright. But I've never been to the city pool. I'm sure it's very exciting!"

"I like the fountains. Mom won't let me swim in those though. She says they are for looking, not touching."
She repeated her mother's words with some solemnity. It was very important that she listen to her mother. Dhalia was playing with the ripples, so she continued her movements, giving more of the ripples for the cat to play with.
"The pool is really big. And there are a lot of people, so it might not be ok for cats to go there. In case someone is allergic to them. Cuz if they were they might get sick."
She leaned forward, putting her arms in the water. "SO what do cats do all day? Do you have cat school, or work?"

"That's probably true for people.." She mused softly at the bit of information. It might have been true for cats too actually. But most people assumed cats couldn't read or comprehend such rules.. and even if they did well.. Dahlia wasn't exactly known for being a strict rule follower. Minny it seemed, from her tone and expression was perhaps the opposite though. Not that that was bad. If she ever had kittens of her own.. she'd certainly stress the necessity that they behave and be obedient.
The little girl was strangely thoughtful. Perhaps beyond her years in her obedience and consideration of others. It was interesting actually.. and Dahlia was watching her curiously until the question sounded and her attention turned back towards the water.
"Not a school like you humans have no. But when we're very young our parents teach us the important things. And the rest we learn through experience on the streets."
"Other then that though... we hunt... explore things.. watch humans and other animals... nap when we please.. play with what we want. We do whatever we want for the most part. We don't really have jobs like people do so there is lots of time to just play and have fun." Tempting hmmm?
