PostPosted: Sun Aug 28, 2011 12:35 pm

Character Name: Alaric
Type: Pokemon
Species: Zangoose

Gender: Male
Height: 5'5"
Age: 21-23ish

Nature: Hardy

Ability:
Immunity
Prevents the Pokémon from getting poisoned, both in and out of battle. This is possibly an adaptation that was developed over time to deal with the fangs and tail of the Zangoose's natural enemy, the Seviper.

Skill Set:
- Scratch
Inflicts damage and has no secondary effect.

- Slash
Deals damage and has an increased critical hit ratio.

- Crush Claw
Inflicts damage and has a 50% chance of lowering the target's Defense stat by one stat level.

- Detect
Protects the user from all effects of moves that target it during the turn it is used, including damage. This does not include damage afflicted by weather conditions it is susceptible to, or damage from status ailment that it obtained on a previous turn.

Personality:
- Curious (+)
Alaric is very interested in the world around him, and for good reason. The more a creature, pokemon or human, knows about its surroundings, the longer it is likely to survive. And the more he knows about humans, the more likely he is to be able to avoid being captured. Though over the years this curiosity has morphed from having good, solid reasons, to just being there. The simple fact is, lately, he just likes to know things for the sake of knowing them.

- Cautious (+)
However, seeing as curiosity can also get one into a lot of trouble, Alaric is at the same time very cautious. He's careful about where he goes, what he eats, what surrounds him... everything. He doesn't like to do anything without a good reason for it and assurance that it won't get him caught, or in trouble. This only does so much, as it's a harsh world, as evidenced by his missing eye and many scars, but without his caution... well, he might be a lot worse off.

- Quick To React (+/-)
Caution and planning only do so much, though. One must also have, to survive, quick reflexes, which Alaric possesses in spades. Sometimes this can be a good thing- there isn't time to think and rationalize things when you're being attacked, and being able to react in a beneficial way without overanalyzing it can keep you alive- but it can also be bad. He's rushed into many a fight that he could have avoided by simply running away, because his natural instinct is to fight back, and he didn't take the time to think about why that might not be a good thing. In tense situations where his caution doesn't have time to come into play, instincts take over, and they're not always right.

- Cynical (-)
As much as Alaric has seen and done, there's not much bad that can surprise him anymore. He feels like he's seen it all, been there and done that, even when he hasn't. He doesn't much believe in the 'good' in the world anymore- from what he's seen, even when people do good things, they do them to make themselves feel good. Every action is selfish, no matter what, and every person is cruel inside to some degree or another. This can color his perception of people or situations in bad ways, though his bias is stronger against humans than other pokemon.

- Paranoid (-)
His cynicism comes hand-in-hand with his paranoia. There's rarely a moment when Alaric isn't analyzing motives behind each action, looking over his shoulder for danger that is nonexistant, or feeling as if someone is watching his every move. He believes the worst of everyone and thus can't allow himself to relax around them, always waiting for an attack that isn't likely to come. Paranoia leads to high stress levels and snappiness, which can lead to raised susceptibility to minor illnesses, such as colds and headaches... which is just all around not good.

Strengths:
- Analytical
Alaric's unusually good at taking a step back from non-urgent situations and looking over all the details, pulling all of the available information together and picking it apart until he comes up with a conclusion that matches the evidence, rather than a conclusion that bends the evidence to its purpose.

- Hard To Fool
It's pretty difficult to fool Alaric on any number of things. He rarely believes the truth, why would he believe a lie? This isn't to say it's impossible- if you're trying to lie to him about how horrible someone else is, well, that he'll buy into pretty easily.

- Fast and Strong
Two things that Alaric's got going for him is his speed, and his strength. You need both for tangling with Sevipers, which he's done quite a few times. He hits like his arm is a sledgehammer and runs like his feet never touch the ground. (And if he trips, well, you didn't see that. You didn't see it.)

Weaknesses:
- Slow To Trust
Quite unluckily, even when trust is what is called for, Alaric has trouble with it. Someone has to prove themselves time and time again before he can even consider trusting them, which, in situations that call for immediate trust, can be a very, very bad thing, and very detrimental to his health.

- Slow To Change
The previous applies to change as well. Even with a human form, Alaric is loathe to give up or change the habits he had as a pokemon. He doesn't like new concepts, new points of view, changes in location... hell, he lived in the same patch of grass for most of his life. He hates change.

- Forgets To Defend
When fighting, this Zangoose focuses so much on attacking and dodging that he forgets, when he actually is going to get hit, that he can defend himself, or at least make the blow easier to handle. So when he does get hit, he gets hit badly.

- Bad Depth Perception
Having only one eye does tend to mess with a creature's depth perception, and Alaric is no exception. He's adapted, but it's really rather hard to completely adjust to not knowing whether something is right in front of you or several feet away. The other senses can only do so much.

History:

It starts with two creatures coming together, as it often does, and results in a squalling new lifeform, clinging to his mother's every move until he is old enough to open his eyes and see the world for himself. He starts out toddling and curious, delighted at each new thing that he is introduced to, despite his mother's gentle exasperation when he goes wandering too far afield. She doesn't know what she's doing, raising another creature, but she does her best, and he prospers for it.

Eventually innocence and sweetness begin to be stifled by stories heard and battles witnessed, but that is the way of the world, for a young wild pokemon, even one with a guiding figure so close at hand. She puts him to sleep at night with stories of her own youth, of growing up with a trainer who is stiff and harsh and unwilling to allow any weaknesses, of being forced to battle other creatures, or to capture them outside of battle. She teaches him how to avoid humans, especially trainers, how to fight so that he will never be captured, and tells him that if he is, he will be miserable.

He is still young, but older, when she leaves him on his own, and never comes back. He is not surprised- that's how the world seems to work, and it was good for him that she stayed as long as she did. Without her influence, his natural curiosity wins out, and he finds himself moving closer and closer to humans when they pass by, wanting to see these beings that his mother was so terrified of. They are like figures from all horror tales; frightening, in theory, but with the draw to discover what has only ever been an image in your mind.

The first he sees is a child, and he's entirely certain that his mother was lying. She's small, furless, without any visible means of defense... but her shrill shriek when she sees him hits his ears hard and he scampers back into the grass, ears flattened against his body until he can no longer hear it. This puts him off of his curiosity for a good few weeks, and the next time he sees one it's an accident. It tries to catch him, which falls in line with what his mother told him, but it has a pokemon with it, and the Charmander seems to be quite content with her human.

He escapes, but has much to think about. Perhaps humans are not all as bad as his mother's was... It bears more observation. He is preoccupied by these thoughts when he encounters his first Seviper. It attacks out of the blue, and he reacts quickly, but not quickly enough to avoid fangs raking across his face, down across his eye. His first instinct is to lash out, fight back as his mother told him, but he's learned a few things since she's left, such as that he cannot win every battle. And with the pain in his face and the way he can't see out of the one eye, he thinks perhaps running might be his best bet.

So he does.

He spends several weeks not leaving his hiding place, trying to adjust to not being able to see correctly, the eye a lost cause. When he does next go out of his own little area, he is much more careful, keeping an eye out for anything out of the ordinary. He's jumpy and nervous, but by the time he returns that night, he's sure that he can manage. He just has to be more cautious than he was before.

Over the next stretch of time, he encounters many more humans who vary from cruel or singlemindedly obsessed with capturing pokemon (the vast majority) to kind and cajoling, attempting to lend a hand to bleeding creature. He fights or runs accordingly, and cannot count how many times he has heard "I just feel so bad not helping an injured pokemon". They're all selfish, doing it to feel better about themselves, he thinks, but he never quite stops observing them, trying to figure them out. It would be so much easier if he were more like them, if there weren't that gap...

If he were human, then he would understand.

His battles with other wild pokemon tend more towards the fighting side of the spectrum, and he's tired, so tired one night when he lays down and slips into dreams. He's jealous of the humans who seem to have it so easy, who don't have to fight to survive. It's not fair.

It comes to him that night, the Musharna. It tells him there is a way to become human, and that in learning, in understanding them, it can help them understand Pokemon as well. Selfish- the Musharna offers because it also wants something out of it, but that is normal, and he accepts. It's only a dream, after all, and it is so very tempting.

But then he wakes, and it is not just a dream, and everything is strange. His senses are dulled, his limbs are awkward, and if he walked into a human place now... Well, he would not fit right in, his one eye is not quite right and his tail and ears are still in place, twitching and swishing awkwardly around him. But he thinks that's acceptable, and there's no point in panicking. What is done is done.

All that is left now is to do what he wanted- learn to understand humans, and, if they prove to be worth his time, teach them to understand as well. And so comes a new beginning.

I think this last reserved post should be good enough for now.

Alrighty, only glaringly obvious issue that I can't actually let lie!

Strengths:
Fast and Strong

He can't be 'strong' if he's susceptible to illness. If he's always prone to getting sick his body will never have time to build up any strength in terms of immune system or body mass. If you want to ensure that he can be 'strong' then you're going to have to specify the sort of illnesses that he's prone to e.g. Headaches are one of the few illnesses he could have while maintaining a strong physique.

That's the only issue I currently have - get that cleared up and it'll be a thumbs up.

Woops!

Edited the paranoia section, as it was really supposed to say 'can lead to', not 'does lead to'- More like he's more likely to get mildly sick (colds, headaches, vague nausea that never leads to anything) than he always is sick.

Hopefully that cleared that up a bit.
