Lattice wasn't in the library for any reason in particular, she just liked it there the way it smelt and the fact that she could easily read a book because it had ink on the pages. The ghoul padded into the book filled area and gazed at the book lined shelves - or so she assumed they were lined with books until she got closer and felt around they were indistinct blobs of almost color.
She couldn't sense or see anyone else in the area that she could talk to and that was just as well. One went to the library to read and research not to socialize despite the fact that her first time in this library she had socialized with Petro along with her Sister. Whatever. That wasn't important.
The ghoul drifted over to the nearest shelf her fingertips touching along the spines until she picked one at random and pulled it off the shelf. Opening the cover she read the ink on the page: 'A Young Ghoul's Guide to Etiquette'. Hmm. Not as exciting as she'd hoped.
Hel wasn’t exactly what you would call a reader. She liked to do things as opposed to read about them, or anything else for that matter. Sure, she loved stories, but she loved stories when they were told by a voice, not be some ink on a page! Regardless, she had been all around campus except for the library, so it was only a matter of time before she would come to check it out.
The reaper strolled down an aisle with a small frown, her arms behind her back as she quickly glanced over titles, rapidly losing interest in anything here. But wait! Hel paused, one foot in the air as one title possibly did catch her attention. She reached out and plucked it off the shelf, opening it open and flipping through some pages with a quirked brow. Nope! Boring! She was about to put the book back on the shelf, when through the gap a tan mask with two fathomless black indentations immediately caught her attention. The ghoul leaned forward a bit, staring unabashedly through the gap caused by two books being off the shelf at another student.
Lattice flipped at the pages making more of an effort to try and get into the book but soon lost interest when the book started saying that good ghouls should be seen not heard and ...blahblahblah. Whatever. It was the same think her Elders told her when she was younger or at least a variation of it. The ghoul shut the book and looked up for two different reasons. The first one was she felt eyes on her from the gap made by the missing void of books and the other reason was she wanted to put back the book she had in her hands. Instead of shoving the book in the other's face she gave a small barely visible tentative smile.
"H..Hello?" She said softly tilting her head and awaited a reply from the other as she held the book in between two hands not daring to hug it to her person in fear that her needle-like piercings would wreck the cover. As soon as Lattice made eye contact, tentatively smiled, and greeted her, it was over. The last thing Lattice would see for a moment was a reaper grinning as she quickly slipped the book back into its spot. Next, the soft clink of her steel plated booted across the floor could be heard as Hel moved down the aisle and whipped around the corner, now coming up to the other ghoul. “Hello there, friend!” Hel greeted cheerfully, as if they weren’t in a library and needed to keep their voices down.
The ghoul took a moment to assess the other ghoul, taking in the tattoos and ink stains on her arms, along with the needles. Wow! Hel was incredibly intrigued! In her opinion, this ghoul had to be a strong warrior!
She blinked behind her mask feeling baffled as the shape disappeared after breaking into what she would figure was a grin. Blurry shapes were blurry. Lattice took a moment to quietly replace the book while she heard the clinking of metal against the floor and soon there was a voice close to her which she turned to face. Lattice folded her hands in front of herself a little and bowed deeply, "H-Hello, may I assist you?"
Lattice stood still taking in the other form before her as best as she could alas she didn't have very many visual cues to go on other than there seemed to be a duality about their colors. Perhaps this student was one of the students that were some sort of a jester? Shifting a bit she moved a little closer so as to get a better look but not really clearer.
Hel blinked a bit when Lattice bowed to her as that wasn’t exactly a greeting she was use to. “Assist me?” She echoed. “Do you work here, friend?” The reaper asked curiously, placing her hands on her hips. The ghoul watched as Lattice drew closer to her, not at all minding that. Once the other ghoul was close enough, she did hold out a dark hand to her. “My name is Hel!”
The valkyrie obviously wasn’t frightened by Lattice’s arms. “What’s your name?”
The ghoul paused a little before she shook her head at the question, "No, I am a new student I...recently was accepted," she said quietly wanting to make sure she was clear on that fact. "I asked because maybe I could help a little despite being new..."
Lattice always strived to help others even if she knew nothing at all about her surroundings.
She was unaccustomed to the fearlessness that Hel showed during the introduction; she stared down at the extended appendage before she very carefully grasped the other ghoul's hand to complete the customary handshake, "I am Lattice, pleased to meet you."
Hel beamed when she heard that the ghoul was a new student as well. “Oh really? As am I!” She grinned. “Is that so? I’m just exploring the grounds right now, that’s all.” Anyone new she happened to come across along the way was just wonderful, though!
The reaper grasped Lattice’s hand firmly and gave it a firm shake. Her dual tone eyes couldn’t help but linger on the piercings on the ghoul’s arm, along with the tattoos. “Please to meet you too, friend.” She echoed, still holding onto her hand. After a moment a fair hand came up to trace what appearance to be a serpent on Lattice’s arm. “Is that a snake?” She questioned curiously, her finger maneuvering around the piercings to brush over more of the tattoo.
"Always good to explore," she said keeping a friendly tone though it sounded monotone to most ears; it was always difficult to read her at first at least for most individuals. It was a little comforting to know that she wasn't the only one that was new to the school though certainly her nerves would rile up again when she least expected it. Lattice was pulled away from her thoughts when she heard Hel's voice once more.
She gave a faint smile at the echoed response and was waiting for her hand to be released when suddenly the other hand came to trace the tattoo. Most times she would have become intangible to where the hand sunk through into nothing but she wanted to put on a brave face. Lattice wanted to be brave because her sister wasn't there to do it for her so she merely shivered a bit at the contact as she marveled at the other ghoul's fearlessness, "Y..Yes it is. It is a common mark of my clan," Lattice murmured quietly, "I tattooed it on there myself."
She didn’t seem put off by the monotone in Lattice’s voice. The fact that the other ghoul was interacting with her in a positive manner was good enough for Hel in terms of friendliness. “Indeed it is.” She replied with a nod of her head, still intently looking over the tattoo on her arm. “Ah, I see!” A clan marking, huh? She could understand that concept well enough. Her family had a symbol of their own, but not on their bodies. When Lattice stated that she did it herself, Hel looked awed.
“That is incredible work friend…” Hel followed the path of the serpent up her up, which also involved the valkyrie rotating the engraver’s arm a bit so that she could follow the winding serpent up. Once she looked over one arm, she boldly reached over and grasped Lattice’s other arm and did the same, looking it over and being mindful of the piercings.
By now Lattice was used to the attention or at least was willing to give in to Hel's curiosity. It was like being with her sister again only with very obvious differences. When she was complimented on her work she felt humility take over as she replied, "It isn't that great, my sister's is much better," she pointed out not wishing to set herself up as something fantastic. Compared to her sister she was not as good or so she felt. Perhaps she'd get better soon enough.
Patiently she stood still as the other ghoul looked her over and even switched arms to look at the similar tattoo that was on there. She was thankful that Hel seemed to be very mindful of the needles, "Have you ever wanted a tattoo?" Lattice asked taking the initiative to get to know the other ghoul and why not start on a topic that was currently being inspected? Not that Lattice could likely comply with the wish of Hel asked her for a tattoo but it didn't hurt to ask and get to know how others felt about them.

When Lattice took to the humble route, Hel was having none of that! “Bah!” The reaper snorted, her fingers trailing up Lattice’s other arm before gently releasing the arm. “No need to be modest, friend! That is incredible work, and you should be proud of such, especially considering you did it yourself.” She gave a firm nod of her head then, but also looked intrigued when Lattice said ‘sister’. “Oh? Is she here right now?”
The ghoul hummed thoughtfully when questioned about a tattoo. “Honestly? I never thought too much about it before! Would you be able to give me one though?” She questioned curiously.

The Engraver flushed a bit and smiled uttering quiet, "Thank you," and accepting the praise. It made Lattice feel pleased but still cautious of her own skills. When asked about her sister she actually frowned and physically drooped showing a good deal of sadness, "She is..unable to attend with me right now. She is back home with my clan," she murmured sounding almost despondent and most definitely lonely. Having had Needle in her life so long it was hard for Lattice to just pluck up the courage to go on, but she was trying!
Lattice's expression shifted a bit as she straightened her shoulders, "It would be very ..." the Engraver paused seeking the word out before she uttered, "rebellious if I gave you a tattoo if you are not a part of a clan or group of peoples that need them for rank and the like...But ...It isn't something that would have to be spoken of if I did do so." She said enigmatically with a small rebellious grin appearing.
Obviously she had hung around Needle for far too long.

Even Hel frowned lightly when Lattice drooped at the question about her sister. Oops! Had she said something wrong? Oh…so her sister wasn’t here. “Ah…I’m sorry to hear that, friend! All of my sisters are back at home too.” While Hel missed them, and one in particular more than the others she…wasn’t exactly missing them like how Lattice was missing her sister. No, the valkyrie was still very much caught up in the ‘oooh this is new, and that is new’ experience to be homesick at the moment. “Is she trying to enroll here, though?”
The reaper blinked as Lattice explained how she wasn’t suppose to give ‘outsiders’ a tattoo, but upon seeing the ghoul grin, she couldn’t help but grin as well and admire the rebellious streak. Oh she liked this one! Hel laughed and commented “I like that logic, friend! It’d be a secret that would be kept safe with me.”

"It sounds like you have many sisters," she observed quietly when the other ghoul used the word in plural rather than singular. Certainly all Engravers were considered family but Needle was the only one she considered a Sister by birth. Lattice nodded a little at Hel's question, "Yes...Her application I think was a little hard to read thus she is going to keep trying."
Lattice nodded her head a bit, "That is always a good thing." She murmured softly with a light chuckle. She reached out a hand toward her a pinky extended, "A promise between us that when you want a tattoo you come to myself or my sister."

“I do!” Hel replied. “I have eight sisters, and I am the youngest. So…it is only the two of you I suppose?” From the way the ghoul spoke, it seemed like it! Once again, Hel could not grasp the idea of having such a small amount of siblings. “Ah I see! Well, I wish her the best of luck, and I hope she keeps trying!”
When the Engraver then held out a pinky to Hel, the reaper just beamed with delight. Sure, pinky promising could be considered juvenile, but Hel enjoyed the thought and concept! Making a pinky promise represented a pact, a promise! The reaper wasted no time in offering a pink of her own, and linked with her Lattice’s firmly. “A promise.” She reaffirmed with a grin.

Lattice blinked behind her mask at the number of sisters the ghoul had but she nodded in acceptance of that fact, "I...I guess you could think of my clan as an entire family but my sister and I were born together," she said with a quiet shrug, "so I guess she's the only one I count as my true kin." Lattice nodded a little and smiled more, "I will tell her so. Thank you for your kind words.."
When the pinkies linked she made a short shaking motion to 'seal the deal' so to speak before she released Hel's pinky, "Good. I take promises seriously so you better not break it," Lattice was teasing her new friend, it seemed as if she was warming up to the Valkyrie a little bit more as time went by.
The ghoul seemed thoughtful, "Would you like to go elsewhere? Maybe the cafeteria or something? I...haven't really visited it yet."

“Ah, I see.” The reaper replied thoughtfully, rubbing her chin. A clan, huh? A bunch of people together that made up the family. Interesting! “Not a problem, friend.” She returned in regards to her sister hopefully becoming accepted.
Hel placed her hands on her hips once they made their promise, and just grinned up at Lattice. “I’d rather end myself than break a promise.” The reaper relied rather seriously with a firm nod of her head. She took promises to heart as well…as long as she wasn’t crossing her fingers, but luckily she wasn’t doing anything of that nature. “Oh? You haven’t been to the cafeteria?” Hel was more than happy to ditch the library! “Let’s go then, I’ll show you the way!”
The ghoul then marched over to the library door and held it open for Lattice.

Lattice nodded a bit, "I guess in a way there is all sorts of 'families'." Until now the ghoul hadn't really thought about it that much. It was just one of those things that she just accepted - she had a Clan but she thought of them as family but they were - in a way. She and her sister were a part of this 'family'.
The rather passionate phrasing brought a nod of approval from Lattice as she uttered, "Same for me," she said in a tone rising just a little out of her monotone voice. She took promises very seriously and she would try her hardest not to jeopardize promises. She was brought out of her thoughts and back to Hel. The Engraver nodded a bit, "Yes please," she murmured as she padded after Hel's shape and then out the door, she waited for a few moments so Hel could lead the way to the Cafeteria.
"What is your favorite meal, Hel?" Lattice asked in an endeavor to get to know her honorable friend a bit better.

Once again, Hel thought about this statement. All sorts of families, huh? The only type of family she knew right now was her own…where all her sisters came from the bonding of her father and her mother. But a family where different people came together…? It was an interesting thought. “I suppose so.” She agreed after a moment.
On to the cafeteria though!
The reaper happily closed the door to the library, and led Lattice to the cafeteria, falling into step with the ghoul as she swung her arms. “My favorite meal? Beef stew, hands down, friend.” Hel replied, grinning. Once she was able to properly set up her little kitchen unit and get some groceries, she’d be making some too! “How about you?”

Lattice found an odd amount of satisfaction when Hel seemed to agree with her assessment instead of calling it strange or silly.
She walked quietly with her new friend as she tilted her head, "I never had beef stew. It must be good if it is your favorite." Lattice said thoughtfully. The ghoul seemed thoughtful before she uttered a response, "I do not eat much, I admit, but when I do I favor raspberry tartlets. I know it isn't really a meal but that is my favorite." Lattice seemed to think about it a more before she offered up, "I like cream of wheat with a bit of honey..."
The ghoul seemed thoughtful, "What do you like to do in your free time, Hel?"

“Oh, it’s very good!” Hel boasted proudly. “When my kitchen is all set up, I shall make some for you!” She listened to Lattice as the ghoul went on to describe some food items she liked, and frowned lightly at the ‘not eat much’ part. What as it with a lot of students she was meeting and their not eating? Terrible! At the mention of raspberry tartlets though, the reaper perked up considerably. “Ooh…those sounds really good right now…raspberry tartlets…”
Oh, free time? “Well, I like to train and spar…but I also weave and do leather works.” Hel answered cheerfully. “What about you?”

"I look forward to it, Hel," she replied in a sincere tone as they walked together. Lattice actually smiled a bit wider and nodded, "It does! I hope maybe there are some offered in the cafeteria that we could try. I never made them myself yet." The ghoul shrugged her shoulders her smile toning down a little, "I guess until I do I am at the mercy of the baker."
Ah, the life of a tartlet addict.
Lattice listened curiously to Hel's range of interests, "Oh! Training and sparing? I would enjoy doing some training as well," while she didn't look it she liked learning to fight and defend herself. The ghoul blinked a bit behind her mask, "May I see those as well, one day?"
When the question was turned on her again she found it a bit easier to answer, "I draw and design Hanafuda decks for friends and I also enjoy tea ceremony. I considered trying to do Sumi-e," Lattice sounded actually quite enthused.

Oh, Hel really hoped there was some in the cafeteria now! Her pace even picked up a bit more in excitement, hopeful that maybe there’d be some raspberry tartlets there! “Ah, I suppose you are.” The reaper replied thoughtfully. Baking…that wasn’t really her forte…hearty strew, beef dishes, dinner dishes though? Hel was all over that.
She looked very interested though, when Lattice expressed interest in training, looking over at her with a wide grin. “Oh?” She echoed. “I will gladly train with you, if that pleases you, friend.” She sincerely offered and gave another nod of her head. “Of course, you can see them one day!” Hel would have to remember to bring an example of her leather works next time she was around Lattice. As the ghoul explained her hobbies though, Hel looked a bit confused. “…Hanafuda…Sumi-E?” She questioned with her brows furrowed. What were those?
Eventually, the two ghouls would come up to the cafeteria, and Hel held the door open for her friend once more. “Here we are!”

It was probably best that Lattice didn't spend much time in the kitchen considering her slight handicap. Still chances were if she got desperate enough she'd try one day.
"It does please me, I would be honored to train with you one day," Lattice replied without hesitation, "and we might possibly teach each other a few things." She added at the end. The ghoul was pleased that Hel was willing to show her some of her weaving and leather works craft, "We shall have to arrange a day for you to show me your weaving and leather craft." She almost sounded excited.
At the questioning inflection it seemed Lattice understood that Hel didn't know what either of these interests that Lattice had and so the ghoul seemed to fall silent before she explained, "Hanafuda are cards with flowers on them. I will show you some one day - you can play many types of games with them, and Sumi-e is basically painting with ink," Lattice said with a small shrug, "if I can find any examples I am glad to show you that as well."
When they arrived at the cafeteria Lattice stepped in quietly through the opened portal, "Thank you, Hel," she said softly and waited for the other ghoul to join her. "This looks like a large space. I suppose it needs to be to hold a large number of students..?"
