This wasn’t something the reaper liked to do, no, but she did come to this Academy with the intention to better herself, and that meant not failing any classes! Since starting her first class, Human Studies, Hel was aware that sooner or later, there’d be things like exams and essays she’d have to…study for. But there was a problem with that. The valkyrie had absolutely no idea how to go about studying properly. She didn’t have techniques, she didn’t have tips, and she didn’t have the concentration to sit down and stare at a book, hoping to soak in the information. Hel was all about the verbal part of learning and responded to that well, but the reading part on her own? Forget it!

Thus, as she sat tucked in a corner of the library, the ghoul flipped the book she was trying to read across the table in frustration. Hel groaned loudly and then a thump was heard as she face planted onto the table’s surface. How was she going to do well, now?

Taryn spent a lot of time in the library. She always had. Books were a comfortable, impersonal medium from which to learn... and occasionally sniff. Aah, book-smell. At the moment she was collecting recipes, taking an armful of books with her as she went and then sitting down to copy down a page here or there, complete with bibliography. A pack of snooty ghouls had taken over the table she'd chosen, though, so now she was forced to travel deeper into the library and--

JACK DAMNIT!

A book came flying across a table and into the aisle before sprawling on the carpet at her feet. That was new! The chimera's eyes followed the trajectory to find... well, a ghoul. Who looked very frustrated. Unsure of how to address her, Taryn just stood and stared a bit.

Hel eventually picked her face off of the table and rubbed it at vigorously. She’d have to go pick up that book. Sigh.

She lowered her fingers and blinked. Woah. She tossed a book across the table, and then a ghoul appeared! A rather interested looking one at that. The reaper took a moment to stare right back at Taryn, assessing the new comer. Huh. Unfortunately right off the bat, it was apparent that this new ghoul was not a warrior. She just screamed the bookish type and it kind of reminded her of the other reaper she had met at the festival named Seth.

After another moment, a Hel rose a dark brow curiously. “Uh…can I help you, friend?” Maybe this ghoul was a librarian…uh oh…was she about to get in trouble? Just incase she was, Hel got up from the table and moved over to where she had flipped the book and picked it. She then turned back to Taryn, waiting for a reply with her hands on her hips.

Taryn didn't know what to do when the... the ghoul, whatever she was, stared on back. She felt her ears and cheeks growing hot, but found the strength to speak as the ghoul stood to retrieve her book; she was beyond noticing it was as soon as her back was turned.

"Sorry," she said quickly, and unusually softly. Damn it! Taryn cleared her throat to try and strength her voice, and to some extent she succeeded, "You just, um. Well you look angry."

Yes, that was a grand explanation of your staring. Good job.

"Is everything okay?"

The reaper looked a bit confused when Taryn apologized to her, a brow rising curiously as she waited to hear what else she would say. Hel leaned a bit more towards her, with a hand cupping her ear as the ghoul seemed to be very soft spoken as well. Oh. Hel reached up and rubbed the back of her neck, looking a tad embarrassed before shrugging it off. Oops, so she had seen how frustrated she was, huh? She was silent for a moment longer, not wanting to divulge the reason she was upset, out of fear it’d made her look…weak or something. Maybe even worse. Stupid.

Uh…” The valkyrie started off ever so eloquently, glancing around to make sure no one else could possibly hear this. “…Are…you a librarian?” She dodged the question for now, waiting to see if Taryn was one or not. Maybe if she was…maybe she could ask for assistance…

Taryn peered around the room as if someone might be watching, ready to strike. Were she any other ghoul, she may have been offended that she was assumed to be a librarian. It was the glasses, she thought, combined with the location. It was no big deal. She turned back to the other ghoul and shook her head softly.

"No," she peeped, "but I'm here a lot if you need to find something..." She offered whatever help she could, being wholly intimidated by this angry stranger.

Oops! Seems Hel was mistaken. So…this ghoul was a student then…?

The reaper frowned. She didn’t like the idea of asking or help; much less from her own friends, but from a stranger at that? Nope, it didn’t sit well with her at all! But still, the fact that Taryn said she was here a lot had to mean something, right? The valkyrie wondered if this bookish student would know tips on how to study from books, but stubborn pride refused her to just ask flat out. Maybe…if she…worded it a different way…? Like two veteran warriors exchanging tips and methods on how to behead enemies…yes! That would make her seem less incapable, right?

Hel rounded on the ghoul, so that they were face to face once more. “Say there…friend…” The reaper started with a brow raised. “…What methods do you use for….studying? I’m…looking to try a different approach…” Nevermind that Hel didn’t have an approach, period.

That wasn't transparent at all! Taryn's brows raised as the ghoul spoke, putting two and two together fairly easily. Frustration had sent that book across the room! At least it hadn't been aimed. Taryn nervously pushed her glasses up her nose and stared through the floor. What was an effective method for a new studier? Was this ghoul a visual learner or an auditory learner? Hmm...

"Well, if something really isn't sticking I'll write it down a few dozen times until I get tired of it and couldn't possibly forget." That was an easy one. "Depending on the person, it might help to repeat your notes over to yourself? Or drawing diagrams."

Oh, but there was so much more! "Some people study better while they're moving. Study groups are great, and making a schedule. Or, um. Tutors! They can be great too. It really all depends on the person, though..." Oh, damn. Taryn had gone off on a tangent and completely forgotten to pretend the ghoul had pulled one over on her. She turned a bit pink and shrugged, looking down at her hooves.

Taryn was off to a great start in pretending like she had been fooled, and Hel listened to her very intently. She even dug around on her apron pocket (happily letting the book fall to the floor) for her notepad and pen, jotting these tips and tricks down. When the ghoul went off on a tangent though, the reaper couldn’t help but have a bit of a sour expression. Jack damn it, the ghoul hadn’t been fooled at all!

Hel frowned lightly and huffed.

Oh well. It was out and apparent now! Might as well stick to it. “I see…” The valkyrie murmured, writing a few more things down before looking back up at Taryn. “So…I suppose one must try out different methods until finding one that works best?”
PostPosted: Sun Sep 04, 2011 12:28 pm

"Yes," Taryn nodded curtly, feeling a bit awkward but incredibly relieved that the ghoul wasn't livid. She'd have to watch her mouth more in the future. "I had tutors to help me, but if there isn't one then there isn't one. There should be one you... people try and just go 'Aha, this is it!' I knew a girl once who couldn't study or do homework without music playing, but I'd definitely say try that last. I find it very distracting."

She had not been invited to sit down and so did not, just standing there in the middle of the walkway with her arms crossed over the book to her chest.

The reaper kept jotting down more things easily enough…until Taryn said you people.

Here Hel paused, and slowly looked up at the ghoul with a dark brow raised rather high on her face and an expression that clearly said: excuse me? What do you mean by you people? That statement could mean a number of things, and the valkyrie waited rather anxiously to see what Taryn meant. While waiting (her stare never once letting up on the ghoul), she slipped her notebook and pen back into her apron, and even picked up the book she dropped to the floor. Once the book was back in her hands, her fingers drummed on its hard surface while she waited.

Idly she noted though that maybe the music idea would be something to look into rather soon…

Taryn blinked. What had she said? She looked around them for someone else who had perhaps angered the ghoul and saw no one. Odd...

She turned a bit pink and tilted her head, nervously pushing a lock of hair behind her ear.

"...um?"

In reality, Taryn had only corrected herself. What had begun as 'there should be one you try' had been hastily turned into 'there should be one people try' to try and keep up even the simplest facade for the other ghoul's dignity.

Either the ghoul was playing dumb, or she wasn’t aware of what she said. Hel stared at Taryn with a narrowed gaze for a moment longer, pleased that she seemed to intimidate the other ghoul. Quickly, after deciding that she would continue to sponge more information from her, Hel’s expression relaxed and she broke out into a grin and jerked a thumb back at the table. “We’ll keep working there, yes?”

She shifted the book so that it was in one hand, and then held her hand out to the ghoul to shake. “By the way, my name is Hel!”

...was this ghoul bipolar? Taryn was beginning to believe that she may indeed be, and thus more dangerous than any normal intimidating ghoul. The chimera made something of a confused face and nodded, hugging her books closer to her chest as she accepted the proffered seats. So much for her recipes, she guessed. It was tutoring time.

"Oh, ah. I'm Taryn," she nodded, taking Hel's hand and giving it a strong, practiced shake. Her deadie had instilled the importance of a good hand-shake in her from a young age. "What is it, um. What is it you wanted to work on?"

It’s a pleasure to meet you, Taryn.” The reaper returned, very pleased by the ghoul’s firm handshake, returning it with a firm shake of her own. She really liked it when people shook hands like that! Hel then moved back to the table she was seated at, taking a chair right next to her new peer-tutor-friend, and placed the book back on the table.

Um…” Hel stared at the book for a moment longer before looking over at Taryn. “” Her brows furrowed. “…Say…I had…a test or an essay to write…about…” She looked back at the book. “Microwaves. How…should I go about gathering knowledge from the book?” She pointed lamely at it. “I sit down and read but….ugh.” Obviously she meant that she had no success when she just tried to sit down and read it.
