Broni had seen little of her brothers since they came to the pride - she tended to be busy with training, and, aside from Odd chasing around with Kazul, her other brothers seemed to vanish with their mom, more often then not, into the forest.
Broni hadn't even meant to run into Herryk - she was gathering some of the necessities she needed for various rituals, and he happened to be in the meadow. Broni dropped the mushroom she had just picked into the back across her shoulders, and called out.
"Hello, brother. What brings you out here?"

Herryk had been doing nothing of importance, really. He had yet to find a purpose of his own, unlike his sisters and even his brother Odd. All of them had found something worth occupying their time, and at times Herryk felt a surge of frustration about it. He did not feel comfortable within the confines of the pride. It was too stifling, too suffocating. It was not the forest. When his sister called out to him, Herryk brightened. He did not see enough of his sisters. This bothered him. "Sister. You are looking lovely." He dipped his head in greeting, though his brows shot up as he pondered he question. "I live out here," he answered simply. "So I must ask, what brings you out here?"

"Thank you, Herryk. You look good as well." She unslung the pouch from her shoulders. "I'm just gathering some supplies I need for my duties. I could send thralls to do it, but then I just have too much time to burn by myself, even if I'm still training. There isn't much to do when no bands are going out and there aren't any feasts coming up."
Broni did like to keep busy. She looked industrious that way - and her father's wife and trueborn siblings were easier to avoid.

Herryk took the compliment in stride, almost as if he didn't really know how to react to it. He watched her fluid movements with interest, taking special interest in the pouch she wore across her back. The corner of his mouth turned down in a frown. Herryk couldn't help but feel a little upset by the fact she was wearing it, though outwardly he remained as stoic as possible.
"How is Mother? I have not seen her in some time. Calder? Odd? Ember? Ormarr? I have not seen anyone in far too long."
He did not ask about the one who had drawn the fey family from the woods. The Warlord.

"Mother is . . .well, mother. I think she stays mainly for us. Ember is training to be a priestess as well, although I have been at it longer then her. We will both be official soon, though. Odd is always running around with Kazul. Ormarr and Calder keep to themselves, much like you. I rarely see them out and about in the pride."
Broni took Herryk's avoidance of their father as a signal that she should avoid the subject as well. "Don't you get lonely out here, all alone? Ormarr and Calder at least stay near the rest of the pride."

Herryk loved his family, and he valued the ties that they had. It pained him when they could not spend the time together that a family should, but he wasn't sure who he should be utterly upset at. The Warlord? Herryk snorted softly to himself before narrowing his eyes at his sister.
"I do not require more than I have, sister. Have you forgotten the woods? Have you forgotten what we are?"
His heart ached to think of his sisters assimilating into the pride. They did not belong here. None of them did.

Whether her brother meant it to be or not, Broni felt that this was an attack on her way of life. The forest had been their home, yes, but not for long, and the most vivid memory of it she had was playing with a purple cub that disappeared shortly after and finding a dead bird the day before their father came for Calder. The rest of her life was here, in the pride, being a priestess. There was nothing to be ashamed of. "Not all of us were meant to stay in the forest, Herryk," Broni said, probably more sharply then she had intended. "We may have been born there, but we're only half forest. We're half Stormborn, too."

It was obvious that Herryk did not share the views that Broni did. He narrowed his eyes in reaction to her sharp tone, ears pinning back the slightest. Half forest? Not Herryk. He did not believe himself to be half-Stormborn.
Herryk stamped a paw in childish annoyance. His sister did not understand, this much was obvious.
"I am not half-Stormborn," he said in defiance, a feral expression contorting his features. "He is no father of mine. He wanted only Calder. This place is nothing but blood and rage, and each day that I am here I find myself growing more and more disgusted with everything."

"What do you think the forest is, with all the hunting and death hiding under the leaves? At least we have others here. We aren't just living alone under the leaves, stumbling across dead birds and having to feed ourselves. I don't see why blood and rage to become prosperous and well fed and happy is so wrong when it's ok to hunt half starved and alone, Herryk. And apparently, neither does mother."
Broni didn't like Herryk speaking against their father. Aesir was proud of his cubs, even the Viking born ones. He thought they were strong. She had talked to them.
"You might want to find something to cover up your face if you think the Warlord is no father of yours, because everyone's going to think he is. I mean, his daughters have the same markings. There might be some confusion."
Broni yanked the last few mushrooms from the patch and started rolling them into her bag.

Herryk remained quiet for a long, long while, silently watching his sister gather mushrooms. He'd upset her, he could tell by both the tone of her voice and the jerky motions she used to gather mushrooms from the fragrant, dark earth. He wasn't sure what to say next -- if there was one downfall to remaining in the forest as opposed to living with others in the pride, it was that his social skills had taken a beating.
"Does he ever spend time in the woods with the spirits, Broni?" Herryk still refused to call his father by name. His father, bah. "Do the spirits even call to you anymore, sister?" Or have I lost you forever, as well?

"I'm training to be a priestess, Herryk. It's part of my responsibility to listen to the spirits - all of them. The ones in the woods and the ones in the fjord and the ones in the sea and on land. I live between the two worlds, and I can listen to both. I answer to both."
Broni went on with her mushrooms. She might as well gather all she could for now - she doubted she would want to come this far into the woods for them any time soon.
"And no - our father is not one for the woods or the spirits. He leaves that to the females in his life. He hasn't adopted our mother's way of life, but she hasn't adopted to his, either. They are two different lions, and they seem content to let each other live the life they want. I don't see why their son should think any different."

For a single moment, Herryk wished that things were as cut-and-dry for him as they were for his sister. He did not know why his sister seemed to want to paint a pretty picture of their father, but Herryk could not share the vision. After all, Aesir had never once tried to approach Herryk in the forest -- at least to the best of Herryk's knowledge -- and this was just one more thing to add to the mountainous heap of resentment that Herryk had for his father.
"I will leave you to your mushrooms, sister," Herryk said abruptly, though he took note of the mushrooms that she had been picking. He would gather more for her and leave them for her so that she would not have to come this deep into the forest by herself.
"Give mother my love, and Ormarr and Ember as well. Tell Calder and Odd that I hope to see them soon." He dipped his head in farewell before turning an about-face, soon disappearing within the shadows of the forest.

Broni let her brother go, and finished with her mushrooms. She didn't understand why he was so unwilling to emerge from the forest to see his family, or, if he was so unhappy, why he stayed in the pride.
Maybe she should speak to the Warlord about it? But he was busy enough with the pride and his legitimate sons. Would he want to run after his vikingborn son, unwilling as he was to emerge from the forest?
Broni shook her head. Maybe she would talk to her mother first.
