Hey. I'm new here, as I said before. My names Emi. I'm excited to meet & talk to everyone here. I'm very, VERY interested in Wicca, But I'm sort of naive about it. Like, I was curious about who(or what) is worshiped, and the basic beliefs. I'm sorry for sounding so ignorant about this, it's still new to me. I know that I can't be taught everything over Gaia, but I figured it's a good place to start. Your help would be very much appreciated~ heart

Welcome, I'll try to answer some of your questions as best I can so feel to keep asking them.

First, Wiccans worship the Lord and Lady of the Isles. Their actual names are oath bound, meaning you will not learn them until after proper initiation into a legitimate Wiccan coven. (I can go into that further if you want) Wicca's focus is on fertility. Yes, that means sex. Due to the sexual nature of the rituals (which are also oath bound) and initiation, you must be at least 18 before a coven will accept you. Wicca is all about its "mysteries", the things you learn after initiation. It is a religion that demands "proper worship", meaning their rituals and whatnot are more important than actual beliefs. Basically, you either do it right, or it's not Wicca.

Oh- I see. So it's normal not to understand much until you are actually into a coven? But- Don't some wiccans practice alone? I think I've read that once somewhere? Also- What is the oath you have to accept?

It depends on the coven- some covens train then initiate- but they do the training without revealing anything that is oathbound. Some covens initiate then train- but there's a period of time that you spend with the coven so that everyone can tell if you'll be a good fit.

See- a coven is supposed to be made up of basically a spiritual family, which isn't to say it replaces your actual family, but being able to work together to serve the gods is important.

Once your initiated- even if you leave the coven, you'll always have been an initiate. The rites however need a coven, and you can't have fewer than 3 people for them to work.

Wiccans can belong to other religions though- so someone can be a Wiccan and perform Wiccan rituals with their coven, and outside of that they can worship other gods, spirits and stuff, but they have to keep them separate. Like if someone was Wiccan and also say- a Mambo or Houngan in Vodou, they wouldn't mix the 2 and worship the Lord and the Lady of the Isles in a Vodou rite and they wouldn't feed Ezurlie Freda and OgĂșn in a Wiccan ritual.

Some of the oaths vary- there's a core oath, and then there's extra oaths that can be added onto that oath if it's needed. One way to look at the oath is that in one of Doreen Valiente's books there's a picture of it as it appears in her BoS.

As Esiris said, once you were initiated you will always be Wiccan even if you can't practice because you may not be near your coven or a coven of the same tradition.

However, many of the people you see claiming to be "solitary Wiccans" were never initiated to begin with and aren't actually Wiccan. What they are more likely is an Eclectic Neo-Pagan who has been heavily influenced by Wiccan Outer-Court practices. Many of the authors claiming to write about "Wicca" are actually teaching this.

There is nothing wrong with being an Eclectic Neo-Pagan, I myself follow an eclectic path, but it should be understood that just because you got it out of a book that says "Wicca" on the cover that its not actually Wicca.

Sorry for the late reply, I haven't had much time..Anyway- So, what age will a coven start training? I'm 16 now & I think it would do me much good to train first. Seeing as there isn't much that I know.

You mean, to get a good grounding in generic Neo-Pagan stuff? You may be right. It depends on the coven. I've heard that some of them prefer to teach from more of a tabula rasa, and some will probably start you over from the beginning anyway to make sure your understandings are on the proper wavelength for the work you'll be doing post-initiation. But it couldn't hurt to get an understanding of wider Paganism. If nothing else, another religion might catch your eye as well.

18 is the absolute youngest and many covens won't take students under 21. You need to be at a stable part of your life, essentially.

Because of the sexual nature of many Wiccan rituals, you have to be a minimum of 18 years old to begin formally Seeking with a coven. However, I've heard that most covens ask that you wait until you are 21.
