Once the newly-minted Jovians had filtered away, gone back to schools and homes and civilian lives from whence they came, Europa turned once again to Callisto and gave her a weary smile. It was difficult to tell at this point who was having the worse evening: the youngest Jovian might have been six kinds of distressed, but once the euphoria of a well-run meeting went away, Europa was left with the crushing knowledge that she had failed and failed hard. All that was waiting for her at home was an empty apartment and a smashed mirror. There would be traces of Kat everywhere, but no Kat herself.

Kat would never come home. She would just have to deal with that and file the missing persons report. Time to put on her big girl panties and deal with it. "You know what I could really go for right now?" Europa asked Callisto as they descended the fire escape. "Pancakes."

She hadn't eaten anything at the meeting, and Leto had interrupted her before she had a chance to have dinner. Food had been the last thing on Europa's mind tonight, but now that everything else was settled her appetite was back with a vengeance. "How does that sound to you?"

She leaned against the wall of the alley, slumping beside the dumpsters, and powered down with a dark flash. Tallulah Cowden gave Callisto what she thouht of as her best inviting smile. "I know a place near here. It'll be a good spot to talk. You coming? I'll buy you some dinner."

Callisto had remained behind, telling Tomlin that he should head back to Shep's apartment. There would be food for him in the bowl hidden under her bed, she knew; so far, Shep didn't know about her pet kitty. She knew she'd have to tell Shep sometime, but for right now she didn't see how stressing out her brother would help anything. She only gave Tomlin what she wouldn't eat, anyway…

"Okay," she said, standing awkwardly on the roof. Could you even go to get pancakes while you were a senshi? She didn't think that'd be a good idea. You couldn't use a card or anything. And Callisto didn't have her wallet on her. She didn't think that Europa would be very understanding about that. Rubbing at the dark sleeves of her fuku, she shrugged a little bit awkwardly. "That sounds… okay…"

She rubbed her cheeks, studying the toes of her chic ankle boots. At the dark flash, she looked up and was shocked to recognize her tutor. "You're Tallulah," she accused, pointing one hand with its sparkly polish at the dark-haired girl. "Why didn't you tell me you're my tutor!" Betrayed in tone, but she still transformed back into Erika Adalsteinn. At least she knew what to expect from Tallulah Cowden. That meant Tallulah knew about Erika's… um… situation. And now the younger girl felt… she didn't even know. "Okay," she said after a moment, hands fisted in the ends of her sweater.

Tallulah didn't even bother feigning surprise when Erika revealed herself. She'd been there when Callisto awakened, although inadvertently, and didn't see any point in pretending she hadn't known. "I'm sorry," she sighed. "There's no real ettiquete with the secret identities." Well, besides to pretend you didn't know who someone was until, officially, you did. "The only other Jovian I know outside of our Henshins is Kallichore... And now you, huh?" She smiled thoughtfully. Something about the -alli-s.

"Anyways, it's just up the street," added Tallulah, wrapping a warm arm around Erika's shoulder and marching her along the sidewalk. A 24-hour diner glowed at the end of the block, authentically greasy spoon. Tallulah was a bit of a minor health nut, usually, but some nights you just needed to eat your feelings.

"You can have whatever you like," she explained, passing the younger girl a menu as they breezed in the door and settled into a booth. "And we can talk. About what happened back there... Or other totally unrelated stuff if you want to. Heck, I'd probably have a conversation with you about Disney cartoons at this point."

She fell silent and perused the menu. "I'm going to go for blueberry pancakes," said Tallulah thoughtfully. "Coffee... Definitely a milkshake. I've got this covered - what strikes your appetite?"

If nobody had made an etiquette yet, Erika would, she decided, shoving her hands into the pockets of her beaten-up capris. Destiny City didn't get truly chilly until late October, but Erika dressed like it was almost December in most cases. Except the flip-flops; it looked like she'd gotten dressed in the dark, actually. She straightened out her elbows, shoved them a little deeper into the pockets of her holey denim pants. "Kallichore seems nice," said Erika, definitely guarded. She liked Ganymede too, and Valhalla seemed okay even if he was kind of intimidatingly tall. He had nice fluffy parts on his uniform that she kind of wanted to pet.

She picked up the menu carefully, regarding it with a certain reverence. Going out to eat always meant something special, at least in her family; the money was almost never there, and before Mama's death it had been even more rare because Father resented Shep and Erika. Celebrating things like their birthday usually rested far outside the realms of possibility.

The idea of confiding in Tallulah/Europa was a little strange. She didn't like Europa as much as she did, say, Darryl or Shep. But Tallulah was a strong and skilled senshi, who had probably been at this game for longer than Erika had been out of middle school. If she didn't know the answer to Erika's questions, no one would. Still, first she tapped her finger on the chocolate chip pancakes option, pushing it over to Tallulah so her tutor could see what she'd picked. Chocolate chip pancakes were Shep's morningtime specialty, aside from bacon, but Erika tried not to eat bacon unless it was really alluring. Which it usually was. But she tried. "If I'm evil," she said, looking down at her fingertips on the menu's laminated surface, "Shep won't love me anymore. He's… he's all I've got."

Tallulah placed their order with a waiter who was both obviously an unemployed actor and also, obviously angling for a tip. "She is nice," nodded the older girl once their temporary suitor had been finally convinced to put their ticket in. "It's going to be a good team," she added reassuringly, for as much her own benefit as Erika's.

She fell quiet, rattling the ice in her water glass with a bendy straw and listening to the girl as she confessed her fears. Erika's story seemed to be emerging in bits in pieces, and although Tallulah didn't want to pry lest she become uncomfortable, she was nevertheless intrigued. It all seemed to be heading somewhere slightly tragic, but it would have to unfold at its own pace.

But the general conclusion she had so far managed to draw was that Callisto was the most delicate scout on her team. Others might need more guidance in different areas, but Callisto was going to need to be coaxed into confidence.

"But you're not evil," replied Tallulah softly, brow crinkling. Was this... had the notion of corrupted senshi really scared Erika so badly? Surely the dark mirror and the negaverse were fates worse than death in her own mind, but if you kept light within your heart and stayed purposely away from the clutches of evil then they weren't likely fates. Although the possibility scared Tallulah, it always seemed like a sort of distant doom. Slightly less likely than a car accident, but more possible than spontaneous combustion.

"We're not going to become evil," she emphasized. "You are going to stay you." She wasn't sure who Shep was, but what was most important right now was assuring Callisto that with the Jovians she was safe. "We're going to protect each other." And, ideally, everyone else.

And then their milkshakes arrived.

She could believe the Jovians would be a good team. Even the pink-haired girl, Euanthe, seemed to be eager to learn. Except the problem with the Jovians was that Erika was a member, and while Erika knew her way around math and she liked to read and sing, she wasn't exactly a fearsome senshi warrior. She'd actually spent most of her time hiding and getting hurt--she chafed a hand over the three sealed-over scars, running parallel to each other, that she'd gotten from the fight against the badger monster with Ganymede. She'd rather those claws go through her face than turn evil. Shep could handle a disfigured sister. Could he handle an evil one?

Shaking her head, she looked at her own ice water and bent the straw into a compressed form. It was better to stay straight up, easier to hide. Except if you were going under a desk or behind a couch, then the best thing was to crouch over. With that in mind, she twisted the straw into shape. "But they could make me be evil," she said in a small voice. "They'd just have to make me like that Spinel guy. Or like your cousin. Whatever they did to them, they could do it to me, too." She didn't know how to explain to Tallulah that the worst case scenario was the one most likely to happen when your name was Erika Adalsteinn. What more could be worse than a dead mama, a father in jail, and a brother who'd given up most everything he had to keep her in school?

"I can't leave Shep," she started, descending into hysteria, but Tallulah's calm words cut through that and the petite brunette slumped in her seat. No one was going to become evil, but Leto had. Erika was going to stay Erika, but she was already also Callisto. She'd snuck out just that night in order to go to the meeting. Who knew but Shep was worrying forever?

She looked at the milkshake she'd ordered, poked at the colors inside. She'd never actually had what they called a root beer milkshake--or really, any milkshake other than a Wendy's Frosty--but she liked the Mug stuff her mama used to buy with the bulldog on so she'd decided to give it a go. A tentative taste revealed it actually did taste pretty good, even though she'd rather eat it with a spoon--so she did, folding herself up tighter in her seat. "I'm not very good at protecting anybody but myself," she said, worry shining through her tone. "I'm really bad at it actually. Shep always had to look out for me at home."

Leave it to Erika to pick Tallulah's logic apart. Tallulah bobbed her straw up and down in her blueberry milkshake, trying to come up with some way to convince her protege that everything wasn't lost. "You don't have to be," she finally stated reassuringly. "You'll learn. No one starts out as strong as they become. Not me, not Ganymede or Kallichore-" Europa now set against Europa nearly two years ago would pose a stark contrast if there were any way to represent it, like with a graph or something.

"You're gonna be brilliant," she attested, gesturing with her spoon before dunking it into her milkshake. "I mean, just based on what I've seen you do so far? Erika, you're smart - and you're way more capable than you give yourself credit for." Which really just left the corruption fears to be taken care of, and that was something that scared even a senior senshi like Tallulah. She wasn't perfectly sure what to say about that. How did you avoid corruption?

Stalling for time, she took a few swallows of milkshake. "Leto followed the wrong leader," Tallulah said quietly. "And I guess I can't give you any documents signed in my blood that I won't go apeshit crazy, but if I had to guess I'd say the chances of that happening are slim. I have no plans nor desires to lead this court into darkness and I will do my best not to."

Their pancakes arrived. Tallulah doused hers liberally in maple syrup and waited for the server to pass out of earshot before continuing her thought. "As for the Negaverse... awareness is the first line of defense. We can't trust them - we won't trust them. They lie. And there's safety in numbers."

She set her silverware aside for a moment and gave Erika a smile. "You don't ever have to be alone if you don't want to be," Tallulah assured her. "And I've got this feeling - you have potential coming out your ears. Figuratively, I mean."
