This wasn't like the pond in Leadworth, where Amy Pond grew up. This pond, a rather nice sized pond in one of Destiny's many parks, did have ducks. And though Ridley wouldn't understand the reference, it didn't matter as she sat on the edge of the grass with her feet in the questionable colored water. It was still summer, still warm and it was another one of those days where her parents decided to trust her to be on her own for a few hours.

She was dressed in one of her many colorful sundresses, yellow this time with small bees embroidered on the hem, and her green slip-ons rested beside her along with her cat shaped purse and the near empty bag of bread her parents had given her. The Pendergasts weren't ones to eat the end pieces, so they had given their youngest daughter the bag and told her to go feed the ducks ... and not detour from the plan; though they still didn't know she had really chased a cat that last time.

The ducks were unsure of the small orange haired girl, even though that bread looked amazing and the gobbled up each piece she threw at them. But ... she just didn't sit still and that made them keep their distance a little. Only a few of the younger ducks dared to get close but even they had limits.

The day was bright and blue so Ainsley had picked out a blue dress that seemed to have been ripped off the very sky, properly adorned with selections of white that seemed to mimic the white that would have been the clouds. Her hair done up in the usual two braids on the side style with four blue selections of ribbon that seemed to be a close match to her dress and her sandals were white with cork on the bottom.

The child didn't know she was going to end up at the duck pond when she got dressed this morning, otherwise she might have picked out a different dress to match them but when she was outside of her house one of the elderly occupants next door suggested it was a nice day to go feed the ducks at the duck pond, even offering the bread she was going to throw away, the child jumped at the idea. She wanted to feed animals!

So Ainsley McMahon had ended up at the duck pond, a bag filled with miscellaneous bread selections stuffed inside. The ducks were in for a treat! Except, the first thing the child seen when she got to the duck pond was not ducks. Perhaps this pond was really like the one in Leadworth, where Amy Pond grew up, lacking ducks but being called a duck pond. Perhaps they had all left early for the winter? The child approached for a better look and she finally did see some ducks in the distance, and what they were seemingly keeping their distance from.

"Ridley!" The child called out to her classmate, heels of her sandals clicking as she ran towards her.

A small piece of bread was held between two small fingers, her arm out as far it it could go until her body was forced to lean too far. Ridley was making sounds she would normally make to coax her cat closer and the ducks obviously weren't having it. A few of the younger ducks seemed to be daring each other closer, but chickened out in the end and fluttered their way back to the majority with a few quacks and tail feather shakes.

She was beginning to lean further, a few little beady eyes upon her as sh inched herself closer to the flock when Ainsley called her name. Her mind was so focused that she nearly jumped, startled and her eyes went wide. The bread fell from her fingers, a duck ninja-ing its way through the group to steal the snack and quickly swim back.

Ridley turned to the direction of the sound of sandals on the ground, her eyes narrowed in frustration and ready to go on a verbal tirade. Until she noticed it was Ainsley. Oh. "Hi, Ainsley." The disappointment wasn't lost in her voice completely, but she also wasn't full of giggles either. She then noticed the bag in the other little girl's hands. "Going to feed the ducks too?"

Ainsley smiled at Ridley, holding up the bag into the air so Ridley could get a good look at it and so she could look at it as well. It wasn't her bag of food, but the bag of a kind eldery woman, so the child gave it a normal look so she could properly answer her classmate. It seemed to have bread ends inside, a couple miscellaneous hotdog and hamburger buns, some dinner rolls and what seemed to be the remnants of some unknown wheat products.

"Yep, my neighbour gave me these so I could feed them." She said to Ridley, bringing the bag back down and opening it up so she could grab a piece off out of the bag and throwing it as far as she could into the distance only so the ducks could race to see who got to eat it.

"They're so cute," she commented as she watched the ducks before directing her next words to Ridley. "Are you excited for school?"

Ridley's eyes followed the piece of bread that Ainsley had thrown at the ducks, and watched them with a wide smile as they all raced for the piece of food. All she had been trying to do, with her own bag of food, was to get the ducks to come to her. It obviously hadn't been working but seeing them race and fight was actually pretty amusing. Reaching into her plastic bag, she pulled out a few different chunks of bread and hurled them in various directions in the pond to watch the ducks scurry.

"They are, especially when they wiggle their butt feathers and stuff," she had to admit whilst she watched the fray. She threw out another piece.

The next question made her sigh, "I guess." During the summer she hadn't thought about school, which made the days more awesome but now it was drawing closer and she had no idea how the next grade would be. Her brothers were never any help with their explanations of time in which ever grade she was entering. At first, they'd tell her lies and horrible stories to scare her... she she had stopped asking.

"What do you think its going to be like?" Ridley honestly asked, curious of the other girl's opinions.

What Ainsley thought school was going to be like was probably nothing more than some sort of delusion or nightmare as far as Ridley was concerned. Not only was she excited for school to start for a reason other than back to school sales and new clothing, but she imagined mountains of books to conquer to fill her mind with new knowledge. Did you know a heart beats between 60 and 100 beats per minute? Ainsley didn't but she was looking forward to learning.

"Oh," she said with a content sigh as she tossed some more pieces of bread in the water, and then some on the grass around them. "Wonderful. I hope the vocabulary is harder this year." Crazy? Maybe, but Ainsley could really go for a challenge. The work she had done over her most recent school year hadn't been nearly challenging enough in Language Arts for the child who soaked up words like a sponge.

A few of the ducks seemed to be daring enough to waddle their way up to the shore where Ainsley was sprinkling the grass with bits of bread for them. That girl seemed a bit calmer to them, so didn't seem as threatening as Ridley even though the bits were still close to the orange haired one. There was a chorus as they made their way, nibbling on what they could.

Ridley's smile strengthened at the sight of them closer to the pair, adding her own bits of bread to the mix for them to gobble up. It was the least thing to keep her chipper even with Ainsley's insane idea of her ideal school year. She wasn't one to ease well into subjects like the other kids could, sometimes she faired just as well but when it came to math and stuff. "Vocabulary could be kind of cool, I guess." New words would lead to new insults and stuff, "spelling will suck... I don't get why everything can't be spelled the way it sounds. There are too many damn rules." Ridley sighed as she broke down one of her last pieces of bread to throw into the pond.

"I hope we learn new sports and stuff in P.E. though," that was one of the subjects she thrived upon. That and well, the science parts where they looked at animals, plants and what most girls thought were gross.

If Ainsley's athletic ability was anywhere on par with her vocabulary the child might have been more excited about the idea of learning new sports and other activities in P.E. when Ridley mentioned it to her but instead she found herself frowning at the thought of having to play games that involved her eye coordination. The best solution to the idea seemed to be to throw more food onto the ground for the ducks while prolonging the idea of P.E. a little longer.

"I like laps," she replied to Ridley. This would include swimming if Ainsley had known how to swim, but that was still currently on her list of things t learn how to do. Instead, it referred to running. It was something she could do that didn't require too much eye coordination or clever gameplay.

"I'm not very good at sports though," she finally admitted to Ridley.

It honestly wasn't all too surprising to hear Ainsley's confession. Even someone like Ridley could tell that the light haired girl wasn't much of the athletic type, not when they hoped to learn vocabulary and stuff. When she did pay attention to class or watched the other kids, Ainsley did seem to be one of the more attentive.

"Laps can be fun," she agreed with a nod, throwing the last of her bread into the pond in front of her. Ridley began to crumble up the bread bag she had been holding and absent-mindedly stuffed it into her little purse until she could throw it away. "But it gets boring just running and not doing something else like having a ball or something. Which is why I like it when we learn sports and stuff. I'm not the best either but its just fun to run around and stuff." Ridley had a problem of following rules really. Her little hands began to pick at the grass, there was a need to be doing something with them and the green blades were within reach for plucking.

Ainsley watched as Ridley finished the last of her bread and began to play with the blades of grass as she spoke about sports. Unlike Ridley, she didn't tend to have good coordination with throwing objects like balls so she preferred to just run if she had to participate and the less physical activity that it involved the better. She had a bit of luck that one time during camp with the water balloon game but she didn't believe her luck would hold out long enough for her to enjoy a game of basketball or even soccer (and that didn't even involve throwing the ball).

"I have bad coordination," she admitted, tossing a piece of bread to prove it. The bread didn't go anywhere near the ducks and instead they had to race across the water to try and get to it and as they did that Ainsley moved over toward Ridley, offering her some of the bread she had.

"We can share," she suggested.

Ridley muttered a quick thanks as she took the offered bread, glad to have something active to do with her hands besides pull at grass. Sure, it was kind of fun to pull at grass but there wasn't much to do with afterwards - at least in the spring little flowers bloomed to form daisy chains ... but a lot of the parks seemed to cut those. And having bread meant feeding ducks, which was what Ridley's intentions of the day were really all about.

"Just need to work on them really," the orange haired girl offered as a reply. "If you're not good then you just gotta practice," there was a small pause as she pulled at a rather hard piece of the bread, "though, I guess you have to want to do it too, right?" Ridley looked up at Ainsley, her orange eyes studying the girl trying to see if she was the type who would want to get better at hand eye coordination.

It was probably like her and most academic subjects. Did Ridley want to get better at them? Not really.

Ainsley was very pleased to share, especially with all the grains she had left in the bag. She would spend hours feeding the birds if she had the bread all to herself but if she shared it then the birds could be fed now and they could have more fun while doing it! She couldn't deny that the ducks just looked so happy when bread was thrown toward them, quacking and diving toward the bread. It was enough to bring a soft smile to her face that lasted.

"Oh," was her response. Ainsley knew she should improve but she wasn't sure how she felt about it. She remembered the trying to swim in the summer. Lissy had tried pretty hard to teach her during camp but she still struggled to do it and certainly wasn't confident enough to do it without her innertube. She tended to sink, a lot, and that was the opposite of what she had been trying to accomplish. At least she had a really cute pink bathing suit, adorned with ruffles that looked cute even if you weren't swimming.

"Did you get new stuff for school yet?" Shopping for new things tended to be another thing Ainsley enjoyed, especially cute new dresses.

Ridley took a moment from throwing more bread out to the ducks to give her body a good big stretch. She had been sitting in the same position for a while now and was beginning to feel a little stiff. This also allowed her to wiggle her toes in the water they had been resting in the same amount of time as well. It felt nice to wiggle those toes and it brought a small giggle to her lips.

Ridley turned back to Ainsley and shrugged, even if she did still have a smile. "Um, only a little bit..." she confessed. Her mother liked to shop anyways, so perhaps some of the new outfits she got during the summer could account for new clothing for the school year?

It seemed like Ainsley had finally run out of bread from the bag her neighbour had so kindly provided her with, and with its emptiness came a small frown upon the child's face. She could no longer feed the ducks? Did it mean she had to leave the duck pond? She decided no, it didn't mean she had to leave, and took the spot next to Ridley as she looked down at the water and then to Ridley.

"Same here," she nodded. "My mother sent me a new dress though!"

Soon enough, Ridley was finished with the bread in her hands a second time. She dusted her hands off, over the grass, to get the crumbs and bread residue off as best she could before wiping them across the top of her sundress.

"Sent you a dress?" The orange haired girl asked curiously. That didn't sound right to her, it was a bit off in and she wanted to make sure she had heard it correctly. "Did she order you something or something?"
