User Image Mira woke up with a start and glanced around at her surroundings in a half dreamy state. It was still dark, and Daria was still sleeping by her side. The mare was about to go back to sleep when something struck her. Wait...what?! She looked down at the blue and white beauty whose head rested on her own dark body. Mira swallowed nervously as the full extent of what she had done slowly dawned on her. Thoughts rushed into her head as she analyzed the situation, her mind waking up more and more as each second passed.

I need to get away, she thought, half panicked. She felt stressed and anxious, as if someone had placed her in a small cave and left her almost no air to breathe. Mira tried to calm herself as she attempted to stand up as slowly as possible without waking Daria.

Daria's dreams slumbered on as her head rested on the darker female's back. Her wings were relaxed and down, one lying over Mira's back in a bit of a hug. Her breathing was slow and methodic as she slept, good dreams flashing behind her eyelids. She was undisturbed, peaceful until movement caused her to wake up, her lightblue eyes blinking open sleepily as she yawned and pulled away from Mira. After finishing the yawn, Daria fully focused on the dark blue female, with a small smile and loving eyes, not yet noticing Mira's panicked expression.

"Goodmorning." She said softly, her voice thick with sleepiness. She did not yet comprehend what had happened. She studied Mira, her eyes going from sleepy to puzzled when she saw Mira's expression. "Mira?.. What's wrong? Is everything okay?" She asked, peering into Mira's indigo eyes.

Startled by the unexpected sound of Daria waking, Mira jumped and backed away a step before she came to her senses. "Oh...um...er..." the mare stammered, trying to buy time for her brain to come up with something reasonable for sneaking off at night. "Nothing...nothing. I couldn't sleep, so I thought I'd walk around for a bit. Sorry to wake you." She forced herself to take deep, slow breathes.

As she started to calm down, she wondered if there was some way for her to untangle herself from this predicament without hurting poor Daria. She didn't want her pretty friend to sad and alone, yet she knew that there was no way she could stay with her. What I mess I got myself into...

Daria immediately got up and looked at Mira, a strange expression crossing her face, a cross between hurt, anger, and understanding marred her eyes. She lowered her head sadly, her bangs falling into her blue eyes, her wings hanging low on her back.

"You regret last night... We shouldn't have... I have to go.. I'm sorry..." Daria said, her eyes roaming to figure out where to go as she spoke. She gave one last look at Mira before her eyes clouded up in tears and she ran off towards the glen she shared with Jonda and Michi.

Mira heaved a sigh and ran after Daria. She quickly picked up speed, hastened by a desperation to make things right. With a neigh that seemed to cut through the darkness, she called after her, "It's not like that!" The cool night air rushed into her lungs as she gasped in breath after breath to fuel her pursuit. She stopped in front of Daria, cutting off her path with her body. The mare was obviously hurt as her pretty blue eyes were glistening with tears.

"It's not like that at all," Mira repeated in a gentle tone, her words and will were softening from the sight. She gently nuzzled Daria just under her cheek and then moved upwards slightly to lick away her tears. "I live with no regrets, Daria. And that includes last night." There was a pang in her chest. She was not quite sure what it was, though it made her heart feel heavy as if weighted down by rocks. Every time she looked at the hurt expression on the white mare's face, it felt a little heavier and hurt a little more.

"I don't regret anything we did," she began slowly, trying to gather her thoughts and doing her best to make the words come out right. "Most of all, I want you to be happy because I care about you." Mira paused, not completely sure of how to continue. What she was about to say would most likely hurt no matter how much sugar she put on it. Of course, lying and hiding the truth were always options, but she could not bear to do that to Daria. "But I'm not sure if I can always be here for you."

There. She said it. She dropped the big one. But Mira continued talking, speaking a little more rapidly as the words flowed out. "I need to be free and on my own. I can't force myself to stay in the same place for a prolonged period of time, or I get anxious and stressed. And yet..." Her words slowed again as she fought back swelling tears of her own. "...I really do care about you. Daria," Mira locked eyes with the gorgeous mare. "You will always have a special place in my heart."

Daria had been running blindly, letting her hooves carry her the whole way until her path was blocked by the darker azrein. Tears freely streamed out of her eyes as she shook her head sadly at Mira. It's... I can't deal with it.. If you're here sometimes.. and then not.. Its.. not right.." She closed her eyes, trying to stop the tears before gazing into Mira's darker eyes.

"Do you understand?" her eyes begged for Mira to understand. She couldn't handle anything like that. She had just found someone that she cared about, someone that she felt comfortable with, that.. for a moment, she had felt was more than a friend, and that someone didn't want to be around her all the time. "I know you don't feel the same, because you never have thought or even considered that maybe I'd move around with you. I never said I had to stay here forever..."

Daria looked away as another, last tear slipped out. "It was wrong of me to assume that last night was more than... what it really was.. And I'm sorry for assuming, or even thinking that, Mira." Daria turned away, once again, and maneuvered around the other female, and continued towards the glen.

A small frown marred the dark blue mare's face as she broke off eye contact with Daria. Staring at her hooves, Mira began "I..." Her words trailed off as she started to say that she understood, but she did not want to lie to this mare. "I'm sorry. For not being what you wanted me to be." As Daria started to walk away, she followed her wordlessly. It seemed like an automated motion since Mira's thoughts were not on the act. Instead, they were focused within herself, trying hard to come up with a compromise.

In a sense, what the winged mare offered was her worst fear. Mira disliked strong attachments, and ones that would follow her around to the end of her days was the worst kind that she could imagine. After all, she could out run and escape from stationary things, but an Azrein to be with her all her days...That kind of commitment scared her more than any horror stories of the Six.

Yet, she could not bear to see Daria walk away and in so much emotional pain. She thought about staying with her. Perhaps travels with a companion wouldn't be so bad? The idea was immediately discarded as it conjured up the mental image of being chained to the mare with only the freedom to go somewhere or do something that she must agree on.

The more she thought, the more depressed Mira became as the imaginary chains wrapped around her neck and cuffed her legs. The mare sighed heavily as tears flowed from her eyes. She lost the battle to hold back them back as frustration, sorrow, and hopelessness overwhelmed her.

Daria let the other mare follow her for a little while as she sniffed back the tears that tried to continuously fall down her face. It wasn't until she could see the glen with Jonda and little Michi playing some sort of game that involved a lot of running.

Daria stopped and took a big breath before she turned back to Mira, her eyes hardened. "Go, Mira. Leave. Quit following me! Go live your life how you want! I won't hold you back." She whinnied out in a warning. She didn't want Michi seeing the two mares like this. It wasn't good for the young foal.

"I love you Mira. But it obviously won't ever work between us. Go while you still can." She said as she turned tail, flicking the other mare rather harshly with her tail and trotting into the glen, and heading towards the tall grasses where she usually slept.

Shocked from the sudden outburst of animosity, Mira was quite taken aback and stepped away from Daria. Yet, she did not leave as she was told. The unexpected order dazed her as she had been caught up with the assumption that she was forever tied to this winged mare. A rush of relief, bittersweet happiness, hurt, and sorrow crashed into her, sending her mind reeling in confusion. I'm gonna need some time to think, she decided slowly.

The sun was dawning, and beams of orange-red shot through the sky to remind Mira that she had lost hours of sleep because of this ordeal. Exhaustion slowly crept up on her after the initial shock of Daria's spontaneous change of heart. The dark blue mare walked a small distance away from the glen where Daria and her friends resided, and she lowered herself onto the grass, lacking the strength to sleep while standing the way a proper Azrein should. Mira curled up tightly in the tall grass and dozed off.

It seemed like just mere moments later that the mare was woken by a repeated nudge. "Huh...?" She mumbled quietly as she blinked the sleep from her eyes. What she saw sent another shock through her body, and Mira wondered briefly just how many of these she could take before she would die from all these surprises.

Laying next to her were three bundles wrapped tightly in intricately decorated blankets. A movement in her peripheral vision caught her attention, and Mira turned just in time to see a stork fly off with a seemingly relieved expression on its face as if it had just unloaded a heavy burden. More nudging brought her attention back to these blankets. After studying their patterns and colors for a moment, Mira's tired mind slowly put together the pieces. Are these...my foals? With Daria? More questions formed in her head, but first thing was first. She had to let Daria know.

Glancing from the three foals wrapped snuggly in their blankets to the glen where Daria retreated. Mira wanted to run over to get the mare, but she hesitated to leave the defenseless little things alone. She walked towards the glen but stayed within three yards of the blankets, close enough that she could dash back if there was an emergency. "Daria, please come out here," Mira called out, the feeling of urgency was clear in her voice. A part of her realized how stupid that sounded given the current situation, so she quickly added "I think we just got babies."

Daria was cuddled into her little nesting spot, Michi was cuddled close to her for comfort like the foal usually did. It had seemed only a few moments since she had left Mira when the call came for her.

Daria's head jerked up as she saw Jonda motion towards where the call had come, his expression guarded as to what Mira had said. Michi got up at Daria's movement and tagged along behind the white mare as Daria went towards where Mira was.

Why had Mira stayed? Why did she insist on causing Daria's heart more pain? Why... Are those bundles? What.. no..? What? Daria crept forward, peering at the three bundles with a puzzled expression on her face.

"Whe... where did you get those? What.. those.. it. no it can't be, Mira...." Daria's tails flicked in a nervous manner as her wings flexed. She vaguely realized that Michi was close behind her legs, and was careful not to step on the filly.

Seeing the small herd of Azreins show up at her call, Mira looked away nervously for a moment before she gathered up her courage to make eye contact with Daria again. "I...um...I was just taking a quick nap before going on my way when these blankets showed up," she began hesitantly. She felt nudging around her hooves, and she looked down to see a that the darkly colored foal with its white and blue trimmed blanket had shuffled its way closer to her legs. It settled down once it found a comfortable spot up against her leg and slightly under the mare's body. Mira couldn't help but smile lovingly at the adorable little thing.

The feeling of being watched and placed in the spotlight tugged at her mind. Returning her attention to the small gathering before her, Mira continued, "I just thought I should let you know. And maybe...I don't know," She paused, trying to come up with a decent way of wording her thoughts. "Come up with a plan or something for these little ones." The mare gestured towards the three bundles near her.

Daria stared at the bundles, unable to take her eyes away from the three of them. They were all so gorgeous. The dark blue one, with lighter blue swirls seemed to keep close to Mira, no guessing that that was the one that Mira would keep. The other two were brilliantly colored. Daria felt her heart filling quickly with love for the three bundles.

It took her several minutes before her head snapped up at Mira's fidgeting. Daria looked over her shoulder at her glen mates. Go back to the glen..." She said to Jonda and Michi.

Michi hesitated but with a look from Jonda, she took off back into the glen to go look for frogs while she waited to hear what happened.

Left alone, Daria turned back to Mira. "Wh.. What do you want to do with them? We.. can't keep them all.... We'll each have to.. take one and gi-"

Daria took a deep breath. "We'll have to give the other away.." She kept her eyes on Mira's dark ones, which had looked only lovingly back for the past few days.

Daria gave an awkward chuckle. "So much for you not being tied down huh?" she looked away almost ashamed at her comment, but only to notice a darkly colored blanket hovering very near her front hooves, that had splendid white swirls decorating it.

Though her heart sank at having been reminded of her ties, Mira managed to give Daria a weak smile and attempted at a laugh. "Yeah...So much for that thought." She thought about all the possible courses of action, including leaving all the foals here with Daria. While the winged mare would most likely think ill of her for abandoning them, but Mira doubted that she would mind. After all, Daria seemed like the mothering type.

Looking at the blanket that was nestled against her legs though, Mira pushed aside all thoughts of leaving it. It seemed as though the foal had chosen to stay with her, and seeing the blanket with the white swirls do the same for Daria, an idea formed in her mind. "Why don't we let the foals choose for themselves? Seemed like these two are already doing that."
PostPosted: Thu Sep 08, 2011 8:47 pm

Daria looked down at the blankets again, trying to avoid the swelling in her chest, the painful lump in her throat, and the tears burning behind her eyes. Why was Mira like this? Why couldn't she see how good it would be to be together?

Daria gave a soft sigh as she reached down to nuzzle the swirly blanket. She looked over at the light colored striped one. Would she ever see it again?

It took her a moment to pull her eyes from the blankets and give a steady gaze at Mira. "I won't give it to just anyone...They have to be good to it..." She finally said after a while.

"Of course. We will make sure that it will be taken good care of." Mira felt her heart being torn in two when she noticed the hurt behind Daria's eyes and the tears she tried to hide. Yet, the mare's mind was made up. She would run free and wild to wherever the wind took her. Still...she wondered. Mira continued out loud,"Now that we have foals, and I can't travel with such a little one," she paused to fondly nuzzle the blanket at her hoof. "Might not be a bad idea for me to stay a little while." The dark blue mare looked up at Daria with her deep sapphire eyes. Mira watched closely for the other mare's reaction, unsure of how she would respond given that outburst from not so long ago. "That is, if you'll let us."
