Disovery of the Jar
Dropped upon a back door step, sheltered from the cold wind and rain, a simple, small, and interesting jar --bound in leather and hung with beads--did this new and interesting life bring to the ever bored and burdened Puddle. Could not a day of rest he get from monsters clawing furniture and creatures destroying potted plants? Apparently not. But this is in another world and, like all his simple homes, it did come with an interdimentional door that allowed him to move from one world to another.

This would be the world that had that jar in a leather pouch sitting on his back door.

Patter went the rain against the windows. Crash went the blinds where the wind blew through the window open wide in neglect. And this ever uneasy hiss of a kettle on the stove...

The singing kettle grew and grew with annoyance. And this quite confused the humble resident of the abode. “Where doth this noise come from, I do wonder …. and why am I talking like this? “ I said aloud to the potted plant upon the kitchen table with a scowl. “ It’s silliness, I say. Silliness! The kettle isn’t even out of its box yet! “ I groaned, gestured wildly, to the ever amusement of my furniture and greenery, then went back to searching for that annoying and perplexing sound.

What seemed like hours were mere minutes by the hands of the clock and indeed I did find the source of the confounding noise. There, he sat grandly in the jar upon my back doorstep. Musk, hot sand, and bitter sunburned foliage drifted from the darling little bag. How cute, I thought as I bent to pick it up. A few bubbles of slight annoyance, but tolerance appeared. This reminded me of something... an angry house cat accepting that I would be living in its home and caring for it for the time being. Well, it was a pretty jar and it would look good on my mantle, I said to myself to dismiss the silly thought and utter nonsense that the jar was sentient.

I really should have known better. No sooner did I set it on my mantle amongst my other collections of glass jars did the trouble start. I turned away for just one moment and a crash of glass did I hear. “ You’re joking... Please be joking...” I tried to steel myself for what I would no doubts see... Oh look! A tag... On that jar...that just pushed another bottle to its death on the wooden floor below. “ Fancy... a sentient Jar. Just what I always wanted... “ Sarcasm aside... This wasn’t the strangest gift I’ve had before. . . . Ah ...and I always was wanting to do a glass mosaic out of those bottles, I muttered as I cleaned up the mess on the floor below before I or some other fool ( probably me) stepped and cut my foot clean open.

It took me a while, and countless almost priceless little nicknacks from my travels until the Jar and I arrived at an understanding. It could live on my mantle...as long as it was surrounded by furs, candles, and antlers... And it wouldn’t cause any mischief. “ Fine...Jakapello...” I started to call it after this few hour game time, “ You win this round... But I still want my pink flamingo up there. “ Holding out my darling little beanie baby of a flamingo to the jar, Jak seemed to bubble with thought, then hiss in defeat. It would put up with this flamingo. For now.

At last I could sit back and thank her for such a fantastic gift... Really... A thank you card just wouldn’t do. I would be sending dearest Karoshi the tackiest fruit basket I could find. Maybe a singing telegram. Ooh yes.. Indeed...But first! Orange juice for my jar and me!

Event!
Vaporization.

Content with his surroundings and having gotten rid of competition, something seems to be stirring inside the bottle. The liquid swirls as small stream of vapor starts to creep up the nozzle. With a quiet hiss the bottle begins to emit more vapor that gathers up on the mantle.

Perhaps a silly idea, as the mantle doesn't seem large enough for the creature that begins to materialize from the vapor...

Congratulations! Comfortable surroundings have made them emerge.

Since the emergence of the fluffball of havoc, I and Jakapello have taken to just relaxing on long walks. This means I'm practically jumping everytime something breaks a twig. He's taken to hunting now. Small birds, small rabbits, other small fluffy things that I would consider adorable are now 'dinner'. Or 'Toy'. Either one works fine in this situation. He needs to learn to fend for himself.

'Fetch' turned from a game of retrieval to a game of destroy that stick. Thankfully, we're at an understanding that sticks are to be destroyed, or used for kindling. And no stick that is brought inside is to be deemed a 'toy'. That said, Jakapello has taken to staying outside most of the time, roaming around the backyard's landscape of slightly desertish nature.

( He loves harassing the quails and coyotes for some ungodly reason I can only imagine as 'dominant predator symptom. Scares the piss out of me every time I hear a pack of coyotes out followed by his roar. Seriously... Scares. The. Piss. out. Of. Me. )

But for what it is worth, it is wonderful to see the little cub I loved as a jar grow up into such a fearce preditor. One day he'll probably be able to nom my neck in twine with one bite, but that day may be long away. I haven't had time keeping tabs on him what with my own life to focus on. But he is constantly around the homestead, guarding it like it is his own terretory. Kinda makes one feel safe when they're out in the yard weeding, or tending to the garden when a big fluffy predator thing just kinda batting around some dead bird on the lawn nearby. ( Marmots have vanished from my lawn. I am eternally grateful.)

I've sat and spoken with Jakapello about what he wants in his life, and he simply answers almost always " Freedom to wander and roam wherever I please" with a giant grin on his face. Mischief, I say, is all that he wants to get up to. I cannot blame him. I've raised him with a strict sense of rules and honnor codes. Heck, I practically make him sit down and tell me why he killed something, or why he did decided not to to make him think about his actions and to get him prepared for hard life decisions. Then again, sometimes ' I felt like it' is good enough.

Kinda like that one time he decided to leap at me from behind when I was baking a cake for a friend of mine... Flour went everywhere! He got a good clunk on the head from a meat tenderizer for that. Now, why you ask, did he decide to jump me when my back was turned and I was engrossed in fluffing eggwhites? " It seemed like a good idea at the time." ... Opportunist. It makes my heart swell. Jakapello will do well when he leaves the home nest, that I am sure of. Still... Whenever he does grow up, I am going to miss him.

...

Maybe not all the scratches and teeth marks on my furniture and myself, but I am going to miss him when he's being adorable.
