Okay, that was it, enough was enough! Until a moment prior, Sheridan had been sitting in his room, trying his best to look through the book in his lap despite the constant interruptions and demands for attention and cookies from his cat. It was how things usually went when he read in his room, the dragon was used to it, and then... Tanaka had bitten his tail!

Sheridan turned with a snarl, angry gaze leveled on the cat. Just once, just one night, couldn't he read in peace without his books or his tail being attacked? Was it really too much to ask? One day he was going to lock that cat in the closet! Or at least put a muzzle on him.

But tonight he had had enough. A snort, and a snap of his tail, Sheridan collected his book and his eyepad before stalking out of his room, snapping the door closed behind him and blocking off any attempts the cat made to follow.

He took a familiar path, down the hall, up one flight of stars, and out onto the roof. Outside in the cool air, the dragon took a deep breath as his gaze turned skyward, and a moment later he had forgotten his irritation. Now to find a comfortable spot to sit with his book and read in peace away from the cat of evil.

The dragon was not there long before there was an odd muffled sort of grunting from nearby. Was... someone climbing up onto the roof? Without being able to see if he was alone, the figure swung a heavy bag of something that clattered like metal parts clanking together as it hit the roof before one monstrous hand followed by a more normal, human looking hand gripped the edge and attempted to haul itself up.

It slipped, though, and there was a yelp and another clattering that sounded suspiciously like someone catching themselves on a wooden ladder.

This looked like as good a place as--what was that?

The dragon stopped in mid-crouch, quickly standing back to his feet as he looked around. For a brief moment he thought his cat might have followed him, a thought that was immediately dismissed at the sight of someone reaching over the edge of the roof.

The dragon blinked, watching the edge of the roof curiously. He hadn't expected to see anyone else on the roof, though now that he thought about it to think he was the only one who liked to sit up here was silly.

"Are you alright?"

A face suddenly appeared over the edge of the rooftop, mismatched eyes wide behind mismatched hair and mismatched hands. He hadn't expected anyone to be up here- the Demon Dorms were usually very quiet, but quite the hassle to get up to, and he had frequented the Undead rooftop often enouhg for it to become boring as well. He thought he would be exploring new frontiers.

Apparently not.

The climber glanced to his bag before back to the dragon, eyes darting to Sheridan's wings, then to his horns and tail.... Another Dragon. One he hadn't seen before. A cousin of Jericho, perhaps? This one at least looked like he had two braincells to rub together.

After a moment of debate, and a strong gust of wind that made his ladder rattle, the hunchback hauled himself up. He crouched by his bag defensively, brows furrowed calculatingly. He was a hodgepodge of a young man, glowering through his hair now as though expecting the creature to put up a fight for territory.

Sheridan raised a brow, watching the patchwork creature curiously. Not much for conversation he supposed. He might have thought of offering help, but the patchwork seemed to being doing fine on his own and somehow Sheridan got the impression he wasn't interested in help anyway.

A twitch of his tail, the dragon simply stared, his posture showing a sense of curiousness and confusion, Sheridan was not an aggressive dragon (unless it involved his tail being attacked). Besides, this was hardly his roof, it belonged the school, he was certainly not the only one who had the right to sit up here.

However he wasn't so sure the patchwork felt the same way. What in Jack's name was he doing?

"Whatever it is you're protecting there, I'm not interested in it."

Was the patchwork student protecting whatever was in that bag?

The hunchback regarded the unfamiliar dragon, eyes narrowing as he seemed to debate to himself.

His eyes glanced to the books and back up to that thoughtful expression.

Definitely not the Jericho breed of Dragon, that was for sure.

His hands rose in a tentative experiment, slowly gesturing a series of movements- "Do-you-speak-sign-language?" It was worth a shot at least.

Hmmm?

Sheridan watched the hunchback, his head tilted curiously. What was he doing? Was he--oh! He knew what that was, it was sign language! Did that mean this student couldn't speak? Was he only mute, or was he def as well? Either way it may have explained why he hadn't answered before.

Sheridan had read many books in his lifetime (young though he was), he'd lost count of the books he had read. In all those books, he had picked up at least a fundamental knowledge of several languages, and though he could not claim to be fluent in more than a few, he at least knew enough to communicate on a basic level, or so he hoped.

"I understand a little."

He signed as well as spoke the answer, hoping he didn't botch it too badly. Here's hoping he remembered what he read in that book correctly.

Christof relaxed only a hair as he still watched the hand movements... It iddn't take sign language to point to his stitched lips as way of explanation before turning to heft up his bag.

Well, this roof was out, then. He wasn't looking forward to the climb down. At least from here he could get a better view of the other campus roofs. He hadn't climbed the Monster Dorms before, it was an interesting change of view at least.

Finally he turned back to the dragon, once more bearing a critical expression. He looked like a clever person... "know-anything-about-mechanics?" he signed slowly but hopefully.

Sheridan was getting the impression that the hunchback was not the sociable type. Not that the dragon would have faulted him for such, especially considering how often he sat on the roof at night himself.

He had taken a step backward, waiting to see what the hunchback would do, half expecting him to leap back down from the roof and leave him to his reading for the night. Well, whatever he chose, Sheridan was not foolish enough to make a move to stop him.

And then he signed something else. Hmm, Sheridan understood the first part, the hunchback was asking if he knew something, but the last part he wasn't as sure of.

"I'm afraid my knowledge of sign language is limited, I'm not exactly sure what you're asking."
PostPosted: Fri Sep 02, 2011 7:15 pm

The hunchback sagged, but seemed resolved enough to stay now that he had gone through all of the effort to climb up. Rubbing the back of his head as he watched the Dragon skeptically, he pulled a notebook and pen from his coat pocket before hunkering down to write.

Did not mean to bother you.
Was looking for quiet place.
Do you know about machines?

He eyed the books once more, and the look on the Dragon's face as he held out the writing for him to read.

Sheridan blinked, watching the other student for a moment. A notepad and paper? Oh, well that was one way to communicate he supposed, perhaps not the most efficient, but one did what one must do.

Reading the note, his tail gave a nervous twitch, his expression falling slightly.

"Oh, you weren't...bothering me."

It wasn't like it was his roof, and he had shared his perch several times with his friends. He didn't mind if another chose to share the roof. And even if he had minded, it was a big roof, and a big sky.

And then the second part of the note.

"I know some about machines, though I mainly study physics."
PostPosted: Wed Sep 07, 2011 10:57 pm

Physics? Well... maybe that would help? He didn't know much about physics beyond you push something down a hill, it usually rolled or didn't. Barth sometimes talked about it and he was catching on, but trying to read about it usually made him go cross eyed. He was more of a hands on person.

After a few moments of consideration, he shuffled through his bag and approached the dragon with a folded blueprint. It was crude, with various xeroxed copies taped to it in a hodgepodged fashion once it was unfolded, forming detailed windows of information as the Patchwork had deemed important. He pointed to the series covering the engine, brows furrowed as he mimed an "explosion" accompanied by a muffled "HMUUAOOM" in a sad, tongueless attempt at "k'pow!"

Sheridan peered at the blueprints, his head titled curiously as he looked over the page. A thoughtful twitch of his tail, he tried to make sense of the various drawings and notes. Hmm, it was very rough and a bit difficult to read, but nonetheless impressive.

Hmmm, so this was a detail of that, and this... He reached out as if trying to visually connect various sections of the plan, though he was careful not to touch the paper itself.

"It blew up on you?"

Or was he trying to find a way to make it explode, or...was he trying to indicate he was trying to make a combustion engine? He was already scrambling for his books, picking up his eyePad before returning to the blueprints.

There is always an app for that!
PostPosted: Sat Sep 10, 2011 11:58 pm

He nodded, but paused as Sheridan pulled out what wasn't a book. Christof had never seen a device like that before- or rather, he had noticed a student here or there with one of those odd pad-things, but had never been close enough to really look. No sooner had the dragon brandished the thing, his head tilted to one side curiously. He looked away to spread out the blueprints and used the unfinished engine part to anchor it from the wind, and was quick to creep up beside Sheridan to try to see what he was doing.

Sheridan quickly scrolled through the pages on the eyePad, searching for the right app (shush, he had a lot of apps okay!). No, no, ah, here it was. Finding the right icon, he touched the screen to select the app.

Leaning over the laid out blueprint, he used the camera built into the eyePad to take an image of the print. There, now it would be easy to make notes or adjustments without risking damaging the original drawing.

Okay, now zoom in on the detail of the engine. He studied over the drawing, looking to the piece the patchwork had placed on top of the plans, and then finally looking up.

"Maybe if you shift this here, and adjust this aspect ratio slightly..."

He pointed to each piece as he spoke, drawing out what he meant, a quickly scribbled mathematical equation, and then. Hmm...maybe it work. Of course it wouldn't hurt to check the wiring as well for any loose connections and perhaps any corrosion.

(( Sheridan is so much smarter than I am, so I bs it and pretend mr smarty pants said something that makes sense/would work ))
