Kazairl

Character Name: Kazairl
Created: Dec 02, 2010
Age: 18 (17 at creation, updated 8/18/11)
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Rank: Candidate
Family:
Mother: Tress (NPC) - deceased
Father: Gonagan (NPC)
Bothers: 4 brothers
Sisters: 2 sisters
History: Kazairl’s family lived in a Cothold some distance from the closest major hold. The family dug its existence out on a rocky shore that bore enough packtail and fingertails to sustain their meager existence. The firstborn, Kazairl might have been saved from a live of poverty had his mother not chased his birth with six other children, the final of which killed her when Kazairl was ten. While a wetnurse was asked to come live with them long enough to wean the youngest, the bulk of the work fell to the father (a stout, weathered, and stern sort of man that was impossible to read) and Kazairl, as he was the eldest.

It didn’t take long for the system to degenerate. The wetnurse had no interest in doing anything beyond caring for the youngest child, and after one of the smaller children died to sickness she began to demand that the whole family move back to her Minor Hold. Kazairl’s father was not an old man, but having aged badly under the Turns of strain, he was forced to agree. At the minorhold, Kazairl’s father often went out to sea, and his children were more or less communally looked after by a few softer women that pitied the ragtag bunch. Kazairl, enjoying the relative liveliness of the fishing hold, needed no coddling to embrace his new home. Restlessly, he tried any work he could get involved in, as much to meet new people as to try new things, and it wasn’t long before he was unloading a tithing shipment of fish at the nearby Major Hold, where he was promptly Searched by a scouting green so quickly that it left his head spinning. Finding himself at Malvren with only a day to prepare for Impression, his heart beat only to the tune of dragons until he came to Sands – where he failed. Not a single dragon so much as eyed him, and, much chastened, the young man fell into learning the chores and studies of Candidates for another Turn, until the next hatching – where he failed once more. The pattern has now continued for the last four turns, but not the type to be disheartened, Kazairl has integrated himself into weyr life. If he does not Impress in the turns to come, he expects to take up some duty at the weyr rather than return to fish. He rather loves the hustle and bustle for the weyr.
Physical: Black, slick hair, dark eyes, and olive skin, Kazairl might at first sound ordinary. However, at six feet three inches, Kazairl stands at a stunning height. His hair falls just below his shoulder blades, though it is always tied back in a thick, simple braid. He has a fringe of bangs that hang thinly over his eyes like bars. He’s muscled from work, though has a slightly lean look to him, as if he’s been unable to get his hands on quite enough food to fill out. This isn’t so, but he’s not above using his appearance to beg a few extra rolls out of the kitchen workers. He enjoys wearing a bit of flair at events, but given his difficult-to-fit size and lack of extra marks, he most often wears dark, loose clothing that seems to rustle endlessly around his lanky frame. His hands and arms bear evidence of his life by the sea, and are a bit too heavily scarred for very delicate work such as sewing. His looks are quite fair for looking at, and he has a cavalier smile that looks rakish below his cleverly-glinting eyes.
Personality: Despite his grim past, Kazairl is not a grim young man. In fact, it could be said that his cheer often seems to grow out of surrounding strife. Having witnessed the death of his mother and a sibling, it doesn’t much seem to follow that he should smile so readily. The knack of his optimism is his detachment. Maybe it stems from his grisly past, but he has little true empathy with others. He enjoys the noise of a crowd, intelligent debate, and chasing girls as much as the next young lad, but his attachment to others is fickle and brief. He would as readily prepare a prank with a friend as he would with a stranger he met in the kitchens just that morning. This is a strength and weakness in itself. He can deal with others with an objective calm attitude, but it’s difficult to trust a man who smiles at everyone, and maybe for good reason, because there's no telling if Kazairl has taught himself to stay emotionally detached, or if he is truly that cold on the inside. He isn't entirely sure himself.

Kaziarl also doesn't like to toot his own horn, but it's hard to be humble when you're perfect in every way. Charming, handsome, witty, merciful, dedicated, oh Kazairl's appreciation for himself is endless. It's nice when others value his greatness, but he doesn't mind when others mistake him for pretentious. It takes perfection to recognize perfection after all, and he's very good at self-worship. Having an ego of this magnitude means he doesn't often take punishment, insult, or setback very seriously. As content as he is with himself, it's difficult to get him riled, but that isn't to say he's entirely laid-back. When bored or in an ill mood, he's not above falling back on the old 'sport' of his fishing hold: fist fights. Even when he loses, a little brawl away from the Candidatemaster's watch always lifts his spirits. No one's ever been seriously injured, but his penchant for sparring has gotten him some rather laborious duties from time to time. Luckily, he's magnanimous enough to forgive the Candidatemaster of this.

Kazairl only sees himself as having one weakness: women. He seems them as delicate, beautiful, special creatures. However, to the women that out-fished him at the hold, worked longer than him in the kitchens, can run an entire hold full of people, he thinks you’re very unique, but you'd be better off pampered and practicing feminine delicacies. He likely got this notion of women belonging in the home from the seamen from his hold, but there's no doubt it's become overblown since he's seen 'real ladies' at the weyr. He enjoys doting on women as much as he loves playing the lovesick fool for them. He delights in their smiles, fancies their coy flirting, and will work endlessly to please any woman that seems like him, but a chuckle and pat on the head await any one who tries to talk him out of his chauvinism. The upside to his sexism is that he would never cheat or be disloyal to any woman's affections.

As proud and self-sufficient as he is, even Kazairl is human an enjoys company. Besides the general hustle and bustle of people, he does enjoy attention, authority, and being respected. He hopes to eventually Impress a large enough dragon to lead a wing, to actually serve a cluster a people with his leadership. It, of course, hasn't occurred to him that he might not be able to garner the trust of others with his haughty ways, but he does wish one day to ennoble himself through service and protection of others. Put simply, he wants to be needed. This is a well kept secret though, since Kazairl is unpracticed in admitting faults, even to himself. Perhaps a dragon will one day give him the opportunity to care for others, either through leading or learning the value of filling a lesser, supporting role to his weyr. Or, perhaps he'll learn through time without Impression, though that day is long away.

RP Opportunities/Plots:
~~~ Kazairl is very impulsive and despite his self-centered attitude, he will fling himself into a situation if it seems a good idea to him at the moment. Fights, argument, promises, deals - there's nothing the young man won't fling himself into.
~~~ There is a well-recorded history of Kazairl's weakness for women. The lovelier the stronger their effect on him, but there's little Kazairl won't do for the affection of women. This makes him subject to manipulation, but who knows? Maybe the right lady could truly win his heart.
