Between was looking more appealing with every passing candle mark. T'rel had made an announcement--after the dragons had finished their cries; something the Weyrleader felt he would never get used to--that the Weyrwoman had died of an infection. Never having been a good liar, the young man felt he was improving at a terrible pace. He knew Ky't had betweened. Why, he could only guess; but the guilt that had already taken hold of his mind was only doubled.

Now what would they do? They didn't have any mature golds close to rising--Amarath had just risen! What would they do without a Weyrwoman? He supposed Ash would take over Ky't's duties until Amarath rose again... What would he do without Ky't?

Pryth's, you hear me. You know what has happened. Come. Mine is in need of company, and he will not listen to me. He wishes to leave--but I will not let him.

M'nie had been out swimming, one of the tasks that seemed to relax her and relieve all of her aches and pains and help her sleep. The dolphins had been all excited about her newest hobby, and Pryth had enjoyed taking more dips in the warm ocean water as well. The dolphins would take her through the water at a wonderful pace - not too slow, but just fast enough to be exhilirating. M'nie felt that this was the only place she could relax and be herself at the moment. Everything else was an act, most especially these new "Training" classes everyone had been having to attend. She agreed with the reason for the classes - she couldn't argue with that. But how long could she use being "ill" as her excuse for not going between?

She was about four months along now, and she noticed as she twirled through the water that she was beginning to show. She couldn't put this off as having packed on a few pounds anymore. Soon enough, people would start to notice. She sighed, then had to laugh as one of the Dolphins seemed to read her mind. Babee! the dolphin chirped at her, and she couldn't help but smile as the dolphin gently nosed her tummy as the little one moved about. The dolphins were always more sensitive to such things, but even Pryth had known for quite a while now.

M'nie was just considering heading into shore when a voice that definitely wasn't Pryth's entered her mind, one she hadn't heard for quite some time, in fact. That had to be.......Zelith. And he wasn't using her name, he must be mad at her. Well, that was only to be expected. Yes, she knew what had happened, though she wasn't sure how Ky't had gotten an infection so long after her injury. It was still a sad event, and left the weyr in a bit of a tight spot. Ash was filling in wonderfully for Ky't, as she had while Ky't had been ill. But it was basically going to be the next gold to rise that would become weyrwoman. Chances are, Ash would win it unless they had a gold rider transfer in. Or, if a gold hatched and Impressed, there was a chance the aging queen wouldn't be rising as frequently and her progeny would have a chance at rising first. Twas all up to chance, really.

M'nie sighed and was quickly towed to shore by the dolphins, picking her towel up off of the branch of a tree and drying off the worst of the water. Her hair was still dripping and as she slipped into her linen tunic she knew it would get wet, though thankfully not as badly as if she had long hair. Pryth seemed moody at the moment, and she looked at him rather askance. He wouldn't give her any comments on his mood, however, so she simply asked him to take her back to their weyr.

The short flight helped dry her off some, though it was obvious she had been out in the sun - her tan had deepened quite a bit, and her eyes seemed all the brighter for it as the dark circles under them weren't as obvious on tanned flesh. She ran a brush through her hair in her weyr and took the gear off of Pryth. I'll give you a good oiling when I get back, love she promised, and his mood seemed to lighten a bit at the prospect. He loved nothing more than a good oiling after a bath.

Why did she have to see T'rel now? Having noticed the beginnings of her "baby bump", she fussed with her belt - it would only pronounce her condition, but not wearing one would make her seem only half dressed. She fretted and fussed, finally deciding she'd deal with looking half dressed. This was probably the last thing T'rel would need to know. Yes, Pryth had flown a green with a male rider two to three sevendays or so after she and T'rel had done their thing, but she was still nervous about the entire thing. She had become aware of her condition merely days after Pryth had won the flight, and she knew it wouldn't have happened that soon. She knew whose child she bore. The question was - did Zelith?

Tired of fussing, she exited her weyr, walked down to the very next door, and knocked. She tried to get her mind in the game - T'rel needed a steady mind again, someone to keep him in his place. It all felt like deja vu to her - this was how she had gotten in this situation in the first place, trying to comfort the weyr leader. She took a deep breath and waited expectantly.

T'rel took a long time in answering the door. He seemed to be verbally arguing with someone who wasn't there--or his dragon. "I don't care," he was telling Zelith. "If it's someone asking about flight formations again, just tell them I haven't finis--" he opened the door and stared, wet brown eyes widening. Well, M'nie certainly wasn't who he had been expecting. He'd expected some pesky Weyrling coming to ask about formations and things that really didn't seem to matter anymore. He stared open mouthed for sometime, before seeming to, at a mental nudge from Zelith, remember his manners.

At least, he remembered that M'nie was there. "What are you doing here?" he asked. He glanced at Zelith and frowned slightly. The bronze was up to something again, wasn't he? Typical that he'd get a busybody bronze. "Oh. You can come in," he added, rubbing at an eye. The grief was still too close for him to care much about his appearance. "You've been out in the sun," he observed. "Nice day? Haven't been out yet myself..." At least he was attempting to be casual. "You feeling any better? I know you were sick last time we spoke."

Of course, it didn't come to mind that last time they'd spoken had been a few sevendays ago.

Just like T'rel to go straight to the topic she least wanted to speak about. He looked like a wreck. His eyes were all red and puffy, and it was obvious that he had been crying. She looked away, instead walking into the weyr, looking around. Things seemed in disarray, and while Zelith looked smug, she didn't focus on him. She had to tread very carefully here, lest she reveal herself. But what to say?

The doctors seem to think it's going to be a while longer. I'm feeling alright, but they say I'm running at a constantly different temperature she said, hoping he'd assume that the temperature was higher. In all truth, her temperature was lower, but she wasn't going to make it too easy for T'rel to figure her out. Besides, she wasn't here about herself in any event. She was here at Zelith's request, for T'rel.

How are you holding up? she said, getting blunt and hoping it would be enough to side track him. This was, after all, her reason for being here.

"So you've been to see the healers?" T'rel seemed relieved. Perhaps he was concerned he'd be losing more riders, so soon after Ky't's death, or maybe it was something else. "A fever, though... You should be in bed, then. Not outside like you clearly have been." He studied her, and frowned slightly. "I'm sure the healers know better than I do, but just looking at you, you seem in perfect health. You're glowing with it! Like a gold ready to rise..." he hesitated, looking at his feet.

"Like the rest of the Weyr, I suppose..." he began awkwardly. How was he holding up? Shards, he didn't know. "Do you want a bubblypie? Some candidate brought them up to me earlier, but I'm not feeling much like eating anything sweet..." He paused and raised his eyes to study the bluerider again.

"When do you think you'll be able to go between again?" he asked. "You should be learning how to duck. I don't want any of our riders hit by Thread if it's preventable."
PostPosted: Fri Aug 19, 2011 3:20 pm

Great. He was suspicious, and now what was she going to say? She helped herself to a seat and glanced at the bubbly pie, desperately trying to reign in her far-flung emotions and hormones. She wanted to make some remark about only fat people needing pies, and what was she, fat? But no, that would make it all too easy for T'rel to figure out. Still, she cut herself a section of pie, using the action to keep her from saying anything stupid and to gather herself. Wouldn't it just be easier to say she was pregnant? It wouldn't necessarily mean it was T'rel's, after all. She sighed, taking her first bite of the pie.

I won't be able to go between for quite some while, T'rel. Probably about five months, let this thing run its course she said, not really able to come up with anything better than that. Everyone would know eventually - it wasn't like a huge belly was something she could hide. Might as well at least give T'rel facts, so that once he found out, he couldn't say she'd lied to him. It was bad enough that Ky't was gone now. He didn't need to be dealing with this at the same time. Maybe I shouldn't have come. I just came because Zelith called, but you seem fine to me she said, twirling her fork for the lack of anything better to do.

"...Five months?" T'rel stared for a moment, before swallowing. "You sure that's what the healers said? I think you should be in bed, M'nie. If it's something that bad..." Something horrid must have been wrong with M'nie! Was it cancer? The healers could fix cancer. T'rel had heard they could take things out--which disgusted him, but if it saved lives... Firehead? No, firehead was native to the Southern continent.

A parasite, maybe? Maybe... No, surely she would have told him... Jailla had made sure he knew right when she found out... "M'nie, are you pregnant?" he asked with some awe, eyes wide. "I can't think of anything else..." Unless it really was a parasite--but she did seem the perfect image of health. He assumed it was with the male greenrider from a while back. "Congratulations!" But it sounded half hearted. Why was he expected to function? Ky't was gone. "...You can hear Zelith?" he asked, blinking. "Since when?"

He seemed fine? That was a relief. That way if Z'iv or someone else needed him, he wouldn't have to worry about seeming weak.
PostPosted: Fri Aug 19, 2011 4:20 pm

She closed her eyes, as if by not seeing him, he would cease to be there. But......what was this? He didn't seem to get it. Yes, she was pregnant, but that's it? Congratulations? And it seemed half-hearted at that. Did he know? She looked earnestly into his face -- no, she didn't think he knew. She about died from the relief. To his first question, she said simply Yes.

To his second question, she seemed a bit more confused. I've been able to hear him ever since.... she trailed off. She didn't really want to bring up that time, especially with his new realization that she was, indeed, pregnant. She didn't want to remind him that there was more than one chance for who was the father of this child. She didn't know what else to say, so she simply folded her hands in her lap and stared at the wood grain of his table. She didn't think he had really gotten to his reaction yet - if this was all she was going to get, she'd consider herself lucky. He'd probably yell at her for drilling at all, but she could answer to that. She was just now getting to the point where she'd have to be careful, and Pryth was in her mind as much as he could be any time they were together, making sure his movements didn't bother her.

"Who's the father?" T'rel asked with polite curiosity. He wanted to keep the conversation as casual as possible. "I heard Pryth flew a green a while back, but I never heard what came out of that." The young Weyrleader never paid much attention to green flights. He knew that wasn't very good of him, being Weyrleader--but they had never truly interested him. Especially after Zelith had flown Rath.

He paused, looking vaguely confused. So M'nie could hear Zelith? That was unexpected. Perhaps the bronze had taken a liking to the bluerider. He glanced questioningly at Zelith. "I've never been able to hear Pryth," he mused aloud. "Zelith must really like you." He forced a smile for the bluerider's benefit.

"Do you have a name for the baby yet?"
PostPosted: Fri Aug 19, 2011 5:41 pm

Why did he just continue asking questions she didn't want to answer? Had he always been this nosy and she just hadn't noticed? She shook her head at the barrage of questions. Which one to answer first?

He flew K'nar's green she said, answering a question he hadn't asked, and hoping he would assume that meant K'nar was the father. What had the next question been? Pryth is kind of talkative, but he's never been sure about us, so.....maybe that's why? she offered, not too sure about why Pryth hadn't talked to him and really not having any reason. Zelith must really like her? Sure, she supposed so. The dragon certainly had his own sense of humor, that was for sure.

I've been toying with some options, but I haven't decided on a name for her yet she dodged, knowing full well what she would name her daughter, that is, if the dolphins were right, and she wasn't entirely sure they were. Ultrasound was iffy enough in the water, much less through someone's skin and all that.

T'rel certainly had always been nosy--more so than he was being now, with M'nie. "So K'nar's the father?" he asked, giving another forced smile. He'd always liked K'nar. The man was a hard worker, and had some skill in the skies. "I'll have to congratulate him next time I see him." It seemed, talking to M'nie about her soon-to-be baby distracted him, if only briefly, from the grief he was experiencing.

"Are you going to foster her here in the Weyr, or at a hold?" T'rel asked. He didn't notice Zelith's expression. The bronze was clearly amused, eyes whirling green even in the dim of the weyr. "Maybe," he mused. He figured Pryth didn't like him much. He wondered why. Surely he had never done anything to upset the blue. "Maybe he's been silent--because you've been avoiding me?" he suggested with a shrug. "I noticed at the drills. But that might have been because you were uncomfortable... Shards, M'nie! You should have told me sooner. I could have made you go between and..." He gave a visible shudder.
PostPosted: Fri Aug 19, 2011 6:34 pm

She forced a fake smile onto her face at his false assumption about K'nar. Just like him to want to congratulate the man. She'd have to tip him off somehow, but how would she explain wanting to fake the father of her pregnancy to the weyr leader? She closed her eyes a moment, a headache starting up at the complexity of the situation. This was getting out of hand, and she never should have come. She couldn't even decide what to say about the K'nar situation.

Probably at the weyr she said, completely ignoring his question about the fatherhood. She glanced at Zelith, and his eyes were bright green.......what was he thinking? Did he know? When had she gotten so paranoid? She shook her head, trying to clear it.

I........thought it would be easier with you and Ky't if I kept my distance. And I had the fever, remember? she asked with a grin, hoping to put him at ease. Pryth would only take me between if it were the only way to keep me alive she said, thinking with a slight shudder about the random Thread fall patterns.

"The Weyr?" T'rel gave a small, genuine smile. "You'll have to introduce me. I'm sure the baby'll be a great dragonrider when it comes time for that. I'll bring you something when--you said it's a girl? I'll bring you something when she's born. A present or something, for you and the baby."

I know. Zelith directed at M'nie, amused. I know, but I will not tell. You do not want him to know. I do not see why not. What could happen, if he knew? Nothing worse than what already has happened. The bronze was attempting to reason with the bluerider. Why should he not know? Zelith paused however, to watch his rider's reaction to M'nie's words. His eyes had gone from a vibrant green to a concerned yellow. One great eye followed T'rel's movements as the Weyrleader paced.

"I told her what happened between us," the young man had lost his composure, and his voice had a ragged sound to it. "I told her, like you and Cesa said to...And she went between. It wasn't infection...she was better. I didn't think Rath'd take her..." He flopped down onto a chair and slumped forward, burying his face in his hands. "I shouldn't have said anything."
PostPosted: Fri Aug 19, 2011 8:13 pm

A present for her and the baby? Did that mean he still cared? She was shocked as the bronze was once again in her head. He knew. With his forthcoming argument, she tried to come up with some reason why she didn't want T'rel to know. It made perfect sense in her own head.

He couldn't know, because he couldn't be allowed to care. But why wasn't he allowed to care? Because of Ky't, and because they must lead the weyr. But Ky't wasn't here anymore, so......was he still not allowed to know? Oh, this was so confusing, but all M'nie really knew was that she was scared. Afraid of what would happen if and when he found out. The unknown was enough to terrify her. What argument could she offer Zelith? None, just her fear, which she broadcast loosely at the bronze.

T'rel's next words made her blood run cold and her face pale. Ky't had suicided.....because of them? She sat down weakly, pulse hammering and her legs feeling like jelly. She had no idea what to say, and her own mind was a blank sea of anxiety. She heard Pryth rumbling in panic through the stone of the wall and tried to force some calm into herself. It's all my fault she whispered under her breath, barely audible.

T'rel cared in that he thought of M'nie as a friend; and the baby, well--T'rel had always liked children. Which of course led to him being far too soft on the candidates and Weyrlings. He really was lucky he had Ky't to discipline--he didn't have Ky't's help anymore. She wasn't there to help him.

T'rel looked up almost immediately at M'nie's words. He frowned and stood, shaking his head. "No," he said. "It's not your fault." He wrapped an arm around her in a friendly fashion, and pulled her close, kneeling down to hug her while she sat. "It's not your fault. It's my fault. If I hadn't--" he hesitated and held her still. "M'nie, calm down. Remember the baby! Here," he moved to get a bedfur and wrapped it around her shoulders. "Relax. Have something to drink. Klah? Fruit juice? Do you want anything to eat?"

It is no one's fault, Zelith's eyes had gone orange. His voice was almost angry. It was Rath's and hers' decision. You did not push them between. Mine, stop acting as if you did. You too, Pryth's.
