Despite having been in school for a long time, Lizzy had never set foot into the library; in fact, she only knew the library existed after open house. She doubted that the library would have the type of literature that she enjoyed, seeing how most of them were romance novels (not all of the forbidden kind) but it was still worth a try - especially since she had been feeling rather bored and wasn't sure what to do with herself.
The library smelt like dust and old paper to her, and was silent as a grave - she giggled at the thought - with the only sounds being the occasional cough or someone flipping the page of a book. While she wasn't that surprised at how empty the place was, she was rather surprised at how quiet it was; sure, it might be a library but most of Amity's students weren't known for being soft-spoken!
Not quite sure where to start looking for something that might interest her, Lizzy decided to just pick a random direction and walk towards it, going down the rolls and rolls of shelves filled with books... Some so dusty, she couldn't read the titles off the spine of the book.

During the school year, Merope had done his best to interact with other students and over come the inevitable culture shock that came with moving into a new territory. He didn’t succeed very well. Over time he had became more and more of a recluse to the point that he rarely ventured out of his dorm room. Classes were an exception, of course.
School break had quieted the school considerably to the point where Merope felt safe enough to venture forth. There were still students around, but no nearly as many as there were previously. The Floresctival helped, too -- most students spent the day there and came back in the evening.
The Floresctival was just about over, but the library was still pretty quiet. Merope had taken over a table further into the library, the top nearly disappearing under the many books spread open upon it.
...Or rather some books were open. Some of the books were propped up on the table to form some sort of large oval, and it looked like Merope was alternating between squinting at this misuse of books and scribbling in a notebook.

Nothing actually held her attention long enough for her to stop, pick it up, and actually read it instead of just wandering around the library. Reaching the end of another shelf full of dusty books, Lizzy was about to give up on the idea that there might actually be a book of interest to her and head back to her room when she spotted something... Interesting.
It wasn't a book though... More like a couple of open books on a table, tucked away at the back of the library.
Quietly, she approached the table, not knowing that there was someone "hidden" behind the books on the table until she was standing directly in front of it and could peek over the wall of open books. She remained silent, observing the student - who seemed hard at work - as a small frown tugged at the edge of her lips; she had seen this student before, and had even interacted with him before... What was it...? Morepy? Merepy? Meropy?
"Ah! Merope!" She said out loud, prompting a loud 'SHHHHH!' from someone, somewhere in the library. Blushing, she muttered a soft "Sorry" before offering the undead student in front of her a sheepish smile as she raised a hand, greeting him with a soft "Hi".

At the sound of his name, Merope jumped and looked up, his fins clamping down in embarrassment not meant for him. He blinked, confusion crossing his features as he stared at Lizzy. “Er,” he replied, confused. “Do I... know you? I don’t think we’ve met?”
He continued to stare, then jolted as a thought struck him. “Ah!” He exclaimed, wincing and ducking down as a hissing shush was snapped in their direction. “Er, would you like to sit down?” Merope asked softly, indicating the seat across from him. “I feel like you’re someone familiar, but I can’t place you...”

"Sure," She whispered with a soft nod before sitting down, straightening her back to peer over the wall of books and at the boil, "Well, I don't blame you for not remembering me... But, uh, do you remember hosting a minipet training session some time ago...? I attended that with my minipet, but I guess I never got the chance to properly introduce myself."
She paused, blushing again when she realized that she had been rambling instead of introducing herself. Quickly, she added, "Oh, my name is Lizzy, by the way!"
She leaned against the back of her chair, backing up to take a better look at the covers of the books surrounding the boil before leaning forward again. Looking at Merope, she pointed at one of the books in front of him before tilting her head, "If you don't mind me asking, are you attempting to build something?" At least, she was guessing based off the type of books he was reading.

Merope continued to stare, tilting his head to one side as he thought. Minipet training? He snapped his fingers, nodding. "Yeah! I remember that. I was surprised people showed up, though I don't think any of us made any headway on training," he whispered enthusiastically, his words trailing off in embarrassment. "It's a bit hazy for me. I think my mini got fed up with the session and flew out of there and I chased it. I remember the gnomes tracking me down to return the classroom back to normal, though."
"Either way, it's nice to meet you, Lizzy." Merope said as he used his pencil to tap the books in front of him. "I don't mind at all. Have you checked out Floresctival yet?" He tapped the books again. "Before the Fearados came and ruined everything, there was a booth that had racing seahorses. After seeing those, I want to build my own race track. I have a couple seahorses, but I'm trying to build something that can accommodate several different kinds of minipets, aquatic types especially. I'm also trying to think up obstacles, but if I put something like a barrier up," he stopped, reaching into his "track" made out of books to mime a hurdle. "They'll just swim over it."
Merope looked at her, nodding towards the track. "If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear them."

Lizzy actually felt relieved that Merope remembered the minipet training session; it had happened a long time ago, after all. She nodded at the mention of the festival before frowning when the Fearados was brought up. She winced, shaking her head, "Ah, I didn't get a chance to play that before the destruction happened... I was busy with my own booth, not that it mattered after the Fearados went on a rampage..." She sighed softly at the memory, looking upset for a moment before going back to normal; at least the festival was not all doom and gloom! She had fun too, before that happened.
"Ohhhh?" Her face lit up and she grinned, giving a nod, "That sounds like a fun project!" While she hadn't seen the booth with the racing seahorses, it sounded adorable to her... Although one only had one minipet, recently acquired, that might be suited to such a race track.
"Hm... Well, how about a hole to swim through?" She suggested, "Or something they have to swim over? Oh, oh! Or place the thing to jump over in such a way that it is above the water so that the minipet will have to leap out of the water and over it?" Her grinned widened; clearly, Merope's project was making her somewhat excited.

"You had your own booth?" Merope asked, his ear-fins flaring with interest. "When the Fearados came, I was unlucky enough to be in the area when it showed up. Trust me, getting trapped under a booth isn't fun." He grimaced at the memory. If he wasn't undead, he would have dissipated and wound up in Cricket's office.
He shook his head, dismissing the memory quickly.
"It does? Thanks," Merope beamed, dipping his head quickly to hide the pleased blush that crossed his cheeks. "I thought it'd be fun, especially if I can build it big enough for several minis to race around at once. Most likely I'll have to build it in pieces and have minis go through it one at a time, though..."
Merope broke off, perking up at Lizzy's suggestion. "Oh! What about all of those?" He asked eagerly, grabbing a book off the table. He closed it and propped it up in the middle of his "course," making sure it stood steadily before adding another on top of it. "I like the idea of having them jump up and over it," he began, "The thing is, the track itself will need to be big enough to accommodate all sorts of minis... Unless I make it specifically for one sort of minipet."
"But then," Merope continued, looking eagerly from the book-track to Lizzy. "What would be the best minipet to race? The seahorses are small, so several can fit into a track at once. A follyjox I think would take up the most space... What sort of obstacles could that have?"

"I did! It was a booth set up for the upcoming student elections," She smiled, giggling at the way Merope's ear-fins reacted to his emotions; that's actually rather adorable! Like... A puppy's ears? Her smile quickly faded into a frown, however, at hearing what happened to him; she winced, "That sounds painful..."
She nodded, "It does! Ohhh, well, if you need help, I'll do my best!" It sounded like it was too big a project for one person to complete anyway, and she was sort of interested in seeing minipets race on a proper race track... Especially one built to accommodate water-based minipets.
She stood up, leaning a little over the table as she looked at what Merope was doing with the books before slowly nodding, looking up with a thoughtful expression. She paused, tilting her head as she glanced at the "track" he had made out of books, "Hm... Well, I think something small would be easier to build...? How big are the seahorses anyway?"

Merope shook his head, lifting one hand and waving it as if to dispel the subject. He lived -- or rather he lived as much as an undead could. "Eh, I'm fine. What position on Student Council are you running for? It sounds like a lot of work to be honest."
He broke off, glancing at his own project in front of him. There was an odd parallel between the Council-work and his own. The thought wasn't followed when Lizzy spoke, offering help. That stole the undead's attention. She was offering help? That... That was something he wasn't expecting. He wasn't ever offered assistance like that, either. It was a first for him.
"I -" Merope looked away, and took a deep breath. "Th-thanks. I'll-I'll keep that in mind."
He took another deep breath, then another before he held up his hand. "The seahorses at Sleuth's booth," he began, "Were about as big as the bottom of my palm to finger ti-candycorn!" Merope cursed as his elbow knocked down part of the book-track, causing a domino effect. Merope performed a bellyflop onto the table to try and keep the books in place, only to knock more books down and some off the table. "Fffrrrrrrrgh!"

"Treasurer!" She nodded before giggling, giving Merope a sheepish smile, "It does, doesn't it? I was sent to school to learn things though, so I guess this is another learning experience?" While she would like to win, even if she did not, setting up a booth and running it during a festival was... Also a kind of learning experience.
"You're very welcome!" Her smile widened... Before her eyes widened as well, letting out a soft squeak as the books started to topple. She was about to reach out to grab one of them to stop them from toppling each other when Merope flopped on the table - in her mind, it was an epic sight and thus, happened in slow motion... Although he only made things worse.
"SHHHHH!"
It took a while she her to process what just happened before she looked around, giving an apologetic look in the direction she thought the 'shhh' came from. Her attention then went back to Merope and the books around the table; it would be bad if a librarian sees that right? Quickly, she went around the table, picking up as many book as she could in her arms and stacking them on the top of the table.

Merope clung to the books, the loud shushing reprimand made his fingers curl tightly around he books. He waited there for a moment, opening his eye to notice that Lizzy was picking up books. Carefully, he raised himself up and winced as more books (free from being pinned beneath him) clattered noisily to the floor. He visibly winched as another "SH!" was shot in their direction.
"I think," he said softly as he helped Lizzy pick up the books and straighten them onto the table, "The library isn't the best place to try and plan this out. Especially with..." He waved vaguely towards the shelves. "Yeahh."
He fell silent as he shifted a book, moving it in hopes that it would not fall over any time soon. "Either way... Thanks. For your help," he added awkwardly.

She felt more and more like a puppy being reprimanded at every 'shh!' that was shot their way; it felt like the madness would never end... Except it did. She couldn't help heaving a sigh of relief when she realized that books were no longer falling off the table from Merope's little accident, and that all was well again.
"I'll have to agree," She whispered, giving the boil a nod as she patted one of the books on the table, "We could always move to a bench outside to draw out the track on a piece of paper...? Uh, I mean, if you're still planning on doing more race track research today." She wasn't sure if this was a cue for them to part ways or something.
Waving a hand dismissively in the air, she smiled, "No problem!"

Outside would free them of the strict silence the library required. Merope nodded in agreement, picking up his notebook and pencil. "I have the paper and a couple notes," he explained as they walked towards the exit. "But truth to be told, after grabbing a few books on racing... well. Most of them were about how to run or swim a race, not about the track itself." He frowned, adding, "Most swimming race tracks seem to be straight and boring. Just... swim to one side and then to the other."
He gestured over his shoulder. "Most of what I was looking for were... well. They were in obstacle course books. I guess most water-dwellers don't like to write, since the most information I could find were just famous obstacle swimmers. I used those books to try and build the course." He grinned, then shrugged. "I guess I was sort've successful?"

"I guess most people just race? You don't usually see anyone interested in actually building a race track, after all," She nodded, turning briefly to look at the books being gestured to, "I'd say you were mostly successful, yes." She giggled before collecting most of the books off the table and heading for the entrance/exit of the library; the books in her arms were then dropped off in a book bin to (sort of) make the librarian's job easier.
"Maybe a simple race track could be made before introducing the obstacles to the track, one by one?" She suggested, dropping the whisper now that they were out of the library, "You said that the seahorses knew how to race, right? So... It's just a matter of teaching them how to overcome each obstacle and seeing if they can do it...?"
