My friend Stat decided she wanted a desktop computer for gaming (laptop = inadequate for TF2), and as her most computer literate friend, I stepped up to help her pick one out. We started out at my favorite computer place, found the best deal available, and then took that deal to several other stores and asked if they could beat it. The guy at Computer Trends took this as a challenge and after about half an hour of haggling, ended up putting together an excellent deal for a much better price. However, it turns out he was a bit of a derp-head, because he sold us a graphics card upgrade the the PSU couldn't handle. SO we called and complained, and they offered a better PSU for cheap with free install. Okay, sold. BUT THEN. My friend brings this thing home and starts playing tf2... but it seems to crash every five or ten minutes. The whole computer would just crash and restart. SO I come and poke around, and I have a hunch that its a heat crash. So I get a program to monitor the hardware temps and find out that her graphics card is 75 ********' Celsius at idle. (Tip for the uninitiated: that is way too goddamn hot) So I pop open the case and what do I see? Both graphics card fans are tied up in low hanging wires. COME ON GUYS. That is such an embarrassingly novice mistake for a professional computer tech to make. I have a hard time believing it. I've built one computer in my entire life and even I know that leaving wires hanging near a fan is a massively stupid idea. Nevermind BOTH fans. Like, what? Seriously?

I had to log in to say, wow; yeah, that's sad. Why does he have a job as a computer tech again?

Ahh, this brings back memories. Scorching summer, staying at my grandparents who had no air-conditioning and using my mom's old laptop. I had to fan it in between typing so my fingers wouldn't burn and it wouldn't crash all the time. Fun times.
