This is a private RP about how brakenhide and thesh-ah agree to raise one of brackenhide's baskets together to make sure the foal is always well taken care of.

It was this that was causing Brackenhide's... well... let's just call it a mental-breakdown. A simple, woven basket of lovely blues and browns. That shouldn't be terrifying, right? Wrong.

"What am I supposed to do with it?! Do I need to feed it? Does it need to be ventilated for fresh air? It can't suffocate in there can it?!" The rambling stopped for a moment as the wracked stallion bent his head back to nudge the basket that was neatly nestled between his shoulder blades on his back. It stirred, so he was pretty sure it couldn't have suffocated. At least not yet.

Facing the way he had been heading, Brackenhide realized that once again he had stumbled off the path. He did this quite often when his head was in another place, but to describe his current state as softly as that was quite the understatement. Righting his course for the billionth time, his soft-stepping hooves kept him going towards his ultimate destination.

He was heading towards the only being he could really truly trust. She had been a random meet, but over time had turned into someone that he met with quite often. Normally when he met with mares it was for only one reason, and that reason usually led to a romantic night under the stars. But this mare was different. He wasn't sure how to explain, really, but he could just talk to her without worrying about losing her interest. She always listened, and she quite often knew what to do when he didn't. So this was the obvious choice when struck with a crisis as perplexing and terrifying as this one.

He was still trying to figure out how he had allowed himself to be talked into this, in the first place. Had the mother tracked him down and SURPRISE! Left a basket for him to find when he awoke? Had they had a conversation about him caring for the thing? Had it run him down like a hungry wolf and wrestled him into submission? He honestly had no idea. His head was a jumble of half-sentences and blurry images at best.

"And what do I do when it comes out?! What if it's snotty and gross? What if it's angry and mean?!!" He nearly burst into tears at the thought. He couldn't take much more of this, but to his great relief he was getting close now.

Brackenhide knew that the mare often wandered this area, picking herbs and generally helping out her human. He had only been here a few times, and was not yet as familiar with the area as he'd like, but that didn't stop him in his frazzled step. Normally he would be on the lookout for Thesh-Ah by now, but under his more-messy-than-usual mop his eyes were on his hooves below as he continued to mumble, "What.... But if.... and then! Humph...."

Early morning dew dripped down the leaves of the trees and spattered against her battle vestments with a pitter patter gently waking her.
Her glowing green eyes fluttered open slowly and she eyed the bright sun shimmering down through the canopy of the forest not quite wanting to wake as of yet but knowing she had better. Wearily she twisted this way and that stretching throughly. As her battle weary bones protested with creaking and popping in the damp morning air.
A few moments later after some particularly stubborn kinks got worked out she thought she heard Something not far off which was somewhat unusual considering Thesh-ah was the very definition of an early riser at least in these parts.
Looking up ward she eyed her familiar a crow named rodrick who was still slumbering perched on one of her horns and shook her head to wake him. He squawked a protest.
"nooo." he moaned.
"Roderick be my eyes." she said still straining her eyes to see him perched.
"I'll be your eyes in a moment. Ten more minuets."he pleaded.
"I'm serious." she replied Shaking her head again.
Angrily he flew off into a rather high branch of a tree and went back to sleep.
"Rodrick!" she kind of shout whispered but he of course did not reply.
With a sigh she trumped off to see for herself. Drawing closer through some trees What she found was a rather disheveled and overly distracted looking Kirin who looked like a messy version of her good friend brackenhide.
She came closer through a few more trees and found that it was her friend Brackenhide what on earth was he doing up this early and why was he muttering like that. Something must have really sent him for a loop. Though she couldn't imagine what it would be as he was usually so confident. Whatever it was it was certainly bad for sure.
"Bracken?"she said rather quizzically with a note of concern as she stepped into view.
a tree still hiding the basket perched on his back from her view.

Normally he would have heard the hooffalls coming closer well in advance of being able to see her, but in this state Brackenhide did not realize she was so close until she called out his name.

Head jerking up with a start, he ground to a stop at the word. Who was calling his name? Eyes wide but weary from lack of sleep and stress, and somewhat from his trek, it took him a few moments to process that he was looking at another soq. The friend that he had come here to find, at that.
"Right, right. Yes. Me." He mumbled, slowly becoming more cohesive, "Yes, Brackenhide here. Surprising, as the rest of the world has begun to crumble and crash." This negativity definitely unusual for him, but even so it was a little uncalled for. He didn't mean it, but it was just what sort of tumbled out of his mouth before he could dismiss it as a stupid thought. "That is... I mean... Oh damn it!" As he rambled he began to wander again, not to go anywhere, but simply so as not to keep still, stomping a hoof to accompany the curse, he stopped again, if only for a moment.

Where he stood now was much closer to Thesh-Ah, only a stride or two away from her, but he had walked in a straight line thus far so had probably still obstructed the basket from view. His eyes darted over to her masked face for a fleeting moment before he turned his head away and began to wander past her, back towards where she had been sleeping just minutes before. As he walked he began to pour words together into almost-sentences, but there was no hiding the basket anymore. There it sat peacefully on his back, almost mocking his anxiety and craze.

"I didn't mean to snap. It's just... I mean... Everything just doesn't... I..." a pause, a breath or two, and he tried again, "...I..." Having reached the tree that Rodrick was sleeping in, he jumped, having forgotten that he was having a conversation with Thesh-Ah. He turned on the spot, rather abruptly, and his tousled mane brushed across his brow half in his eyes. He practically whispered the terrifying question that explained all of his misery and frazz, a look of sheer terror caught on his features, "What do I do?!"

As he paced and mumbled about strange things she couldn't quite understand she listened observing his odd behavior continue.
"I-I'm sure it can't be as bad as all that." she said gently with a good natured smile though she doubted he had heard her.
When he had cursed Her eyes became wide and her ears laid back (not in anger but in confusion). She had never heard anything of the sort come out of his mouth. Ever and she liked to think she knew him rather well almost very well in fact.
However when he turned beneath that tree it was as if the whole world stopped there balanced on his back was a basket.
Suddenly all his insane mumbling made a little sense. The world was indeed crumbling and crashing down.
Unable to help herself she went over and hesitantly (as she was so nervous she could scaresly breathe) put her nose against it. The tiny beating heart inside gave her a feeling she had never felt before because it was a combination of feelings. Like a battle charge and a little bit of fear all mixed together. After a moment She looked back at him suddenly serious.
"where's the mother and the other basket?" she inquired worry notable in her tone but her face forever masked the picture of calm.
Her mind raced surely her heart almost beat out of her chest perhaps something awful happened maybe that was why he was so shaken. Maybe they had been attacked or something of that nature. The very thought of something happening to anyone Brakenhide held dear including his mate, let alone his offspring made her very soul cry out for vengeance.

"What do I do?"

He had spoken, and that particular question continued to mill about inside of his mind repeating over and over and over again. He had also frozen stock still where he stood, perhaps very well incapable of moving let alone wanting to. He had at least made it here, which was the initial goal when he finally managed to form a cohesive plan in his mind. Not much of a plan, but it was all he could manage. His mind was near-broken so this was more than one could hope for.

Movement finally caught his eye and made him follow with his gaze at first and then a small turn of his head. Thesh-Ah's eyes grew wider as she approached the basket, and then she... she nosed it. It almost looked like it... affected her in some way. Almost like it had physically affected her somehow... He didn't understand. What he just barely understood were the next words that came out of her mouth when she nervously looked back at him. They were full of care and worry and though his heart and soul wanted him to jump to an answer he didn't have one ready.

Stumbling over his words, he tried to compile a reply. "I... Um.... she...." He stole the smallest of guilty glances over at her, hoping against all hope that she wouldn't be mad at him. Or jealous, or hurt, or something. For some reason, it meant something to him that he wasn't hurting her. Shaking his head he tried to straighten out his thoughts and words both. "I don't remember. Everything... everything is all blurry and jumbled together in my mind and I don't... I can't... I don't know, Thesh-Ah."

He sighed and then turned his face to look at her once more, and only then did it hit him what she could have also meant. Quickly he added, "There was no fight, no attack, no one was hurt. At least there was no blood anywhere and I don't remember anything like that?" Almost a question really, but it could be seen through his lack of mask that he believed what he spoke. He truly could not piece his mind together at the moment, but there had been no struggle or panic to run. He had simply attained a basket. Somehow.

Once she had believed her appearance had been the punishment for her mistakes now however she knew what punishment really was. Thesh-ah had resigned her feelings for Bracken to being an impossibility long ago. Besides who was she to deserve love? After all she had done and, all she could not undo? Most importantly she could change the inside all she liked but no amount of help could change the outside. She could never be pretty enough again to catch his attention no matter what she did . . . and she had certainly tried. Makeovers, items, healers, none of it did anything toward making her even a quarter as beautiful as the mares he had dallied with.
So . . . being his Friend would have to do. For the most part it wasn’t bad, sure it was true she had her days where being near him was rather depressing but it was nothing less than she deserved she was sure of that.
Closing her eyes she nuzzled the woven bark basket and listened to him speak. she needed to detach herself from the lingering hurt and be there for him and for this basket right now. He was okay that was all that mattered in the end.
“Perhaps it will come back to you in time. ” She replied and looked at him She assumed he had been so shocked when the mother had informed him of the outcome of their . . .union that it had sent him into a state of shock and he probably wouldn’t remember what had happened for quite some time. So no sense pressing the issue besides he looked as if he needed rest and the basket was probably sick of being jostled about.
“Come my human has oats and a safe place to stay while we get things sorted out.” She added moved beside him so they could walk back side by side in case he fainted or something. He hadn't done it before but it seemed today was a day to expect the unexpected.
