Why....did she have to do this?
She could hardly remember signing up for the club in the first place, but she knew she had. She had absolutely no skill in swimming what so ever, but upon hearing a club that was about about water and swimming, she thought it would be a great place to teach her.
That was some time ago. Now, she was very apprehensive about the whole thing. Could she really learn how to swim properly? And how would she escape looking like a complete fool flailing about in the water?
Not to mention the idea of anything else being there...With her luck, there would be some sort of monster waiting to swallow her hole. Or a big fish. It was possible
Well, it didn't matter now. She had signed up, and she wasn't about to back down. But she still needed to do something about her ability to swim, so she had contacted the founder of the club for some help, and asked to meet him at the Gym pool.
She knew that merope was a undead leviathan, a kind of sea monster, so he must be really good at swimming, right? He would be able tohelp her!

It began as all embarrassing situations began: it seemed like a good idea at the time.
Merope had not realized exactly what sort of troubled water he had dived into until the current pulled him under. Making a club that involved swimming was one thing (but not swim club -- another student was in charge of that). But organizing it was an entirely different thing. Merope had completely forgotten about it when Astra contacted him. The rest of the afternoon was spent tearing his room apart to chase down the BLURP sign-up sheet.
Riiiight. He still needed to get supplies for that club, didn't he? And planning it. And hosting it. And basically turn it into a club rather than have its plans pinned to his dorm room wall.
He wasn't thinking about the plans while waiting for Astra in the gym. The protective cover of the gym was off, enabling swimmers of any sort to splash around at their leisure. Instead, his eyes were focused on the pool as he ran a thumb carefully along a delicate gill-slit on his neck. It had been ages since he last attempted swimming in his human form, and the results of that were quite laughable. Maybe if he was lucky, Astra wouldn't show up or -- too late. Or was it?
It occurred belatedly to Merope that he had no idea what Astra looked like.

At the appointed time, Astra walked into the gym trying not to look like she was about to pass out at the sight of the swimming pool with it's cover off. It would be okay, she told herself. If she could do this then she wouldn't have to worry about large bodies of water, now would she?
But another glance at the pool told her it was much deeper then the one in the Submerged gym, and there had been plenty of thigns she could hold onto there. Here, she couldn't see anything that could help her.
Tearing her eyes away, she gazed around the gym in search of Merope, whom she had realized she hadn't met before either. However, it didn't take long for her to find the undead levathian. He was easy to spot with his pretty fins and blue glowing skin.
Oh hey, glowy fins!
The fairy made her way through the gym, giving the pool a wide berth for now and looked up at Merope, starting to feel her nervous again. It was hard not to stare at his face, part of it rotted off to reveal the skin and glowing eye underneath. But overall, he did look really cool.
"Uhh...Hi?" She said

The sound of Astra approaching brought Merope out of his thoughts, the corner of his remaining lip turning up in a smile as she greeted him. "Hey, you're..." a lot shorter than I thought you would be, "Astra? I'm Mero- hey!" He snapped his fingers, pointing at her. "I know you! We met briefly back in Christmastown. I, er, dropped something and you pushed it towards me, but I kind of didn't notice." He paused, then added quickly, "Not because you were too short. My tongue was stuck to one of the giant poles in front of that place. Turns out it was made of metal." He grinned, glowing brighter momentarily at the thought.
He trailed off, looking at the pool. "So," he began. "Swimming. Right. Uh... You gonna take those off?" He gestured towards her. "Your wings? They're pretty, but can they stand up to water or...?"

For a moment Astra wasn't sure what Merope was talking about, trying to think back to the christmas town field trip and if she had seen him before. She didn't remember seeing..Ah! "I remember now!" She exclaimed. Yes, he was that big dragon looking creature, and she had pushed his present closer because he couldn't reach it. A further moment of pause followed as the fairys eyes grew wide, realizing that merope was a really really big monster "Wow, you looked really big back there!" She continued to say. "And really cool too"
She then paused as he mentioned that the pole was made out of metal. "It was made of metal?" She repeated. "Yuck! You should have tried the houses, I think they were made of something sweeter...I can't remember what it was called though" She was beginning to like Merope though, especially when he said she wasn't short
Until he asked her to 'take those off' "W-what?!" She blanched, thinking she meant her clothes but then he clarified...and she wished he had meant her clothes Her wings flicked nervously as she backed away. "T-they d-don't come off...B-but I think they'll be okay, just as long as I don't try to use them..."

Merope preened as best as he could at the compliment. "Thank you," he replied, "Truth to be told, I much prefer my true form than... this." He glanced down at himself and grimaced. Unfortunately his natural form was too big for school standards, and even when he was in his dorm he could only change into his natural form when he curled up in bed. Merope wouldn't do himself any favors if he accidentally trampled and squished his homework or got it wet.
His eyes widened as she told him about the houses. "The... the houses were edible?" He asked in an awe-struck tone. "I thought they would be like the poles! Man! I hope we go back there sometime so I can try that. Unless they changed it," he added, making a face. "It wasn't fun having my tongue stuck to that pole."
At Astra's reaction to his question, Merope stared at her. Then it occurred to him that Astra wasn't an undead, and that the other races did not remove limbs as they did clothes. "S-sorry," he apologized in embarrassment. "I forgot myself for a moment there."
He scratched his head, looking at her then to the pool and back again. "Now is probably a bad time to tell you that I only know how to swim in my natural form."

Going back to Christmas town? Astra hadn't thought about that before... "Maybe we'll be able to go there by ourselves? Since we're alot more experienced now." She thought about telling Merope that she was a knob now, but she wasn't sure if he was one too, and decided against it. "But the houses did taste pretty nice! But I dunno if anyone else would like the taste, it was really sweet"
She began to feel a little better when merope apologized, reassured that he wasn't going to press the issue, But then all thoughts about the field trip were chased away when she was told that...he couldn't swim. Astra's eyes could not get any larger then they were at that point, shocked that the founder of the BLURP club could not swim.
"You...can't swim?" If he couldn't' swim, then what was she to do?! She needed to learn how to swim so she could join the club! Her mouth opened a few more times trying to come up with something to say, but she was at a loss for words.

Merope shrugged wordlessly. He was still a first year, and lacked the experience to even consider graduating into the second year thanks to self-doubt and isolation. He was fascinated by the idea of houses being tasty, though. If there were houses, then perhaps too there were boats! It was something to ask Savage about later.
"Not like this, no," Merope said, lifting one foot and wiggling his toes to emphasis. "Natural form? Yes. My legs are too long, my neck's too short, my fingers and talons aren't shaped right..." The boil ended his complaining with a sigh. "The most I can do is sink. I've been... busy doing other things to set the club up. Those that wanted to go for heroic status are supposed to get a few things for me, and I was hoping to use the time and the things they brought to figure out how to swim like this. Since I don't know how to swim, nor have I asked the applicants to do anything..." He trailed off with a shrug. "The club might more readily sink than swim, really."

It was hard for Astra to understand the full reasoning behind his inability to swim, but she guessed the reasons he stated were good enough. He was a water creature, so he would know...
But it was a little disconcerting to hear him talk about his club failing when it hadn't even begun. This wasn't the way a club president should be talking. She knew Riley wouldn't have talked like that, and she would have done whatever she could to make things work.
As he talked though, she looked behind him noticing the intricate fins that were on his tail. They looked really pretty, but more importantly, he hadn't talked about that. "...What about your tail?" She indicated towards it. "can't you use it to swim?" She was no expert, but she had seen fish swim with their tails...and Merope looked kind alike a fish...

Merope was not Riley. He lacked the willpower and manpower to pull himself up by his bootstraps and get everything going. Add in his own personal problems, and he was far too preoccupied with them to even consider starting up a club any further than the initial interest period. And getting that up was a small accomplishment for him.
"My... tail?" He lifted it and brought it forward, flicking the end as he spread his fins akin to snapping a paper fan open. "N-not really. My tail's smaller than in my natural form, and I don't use it like a mermaid to swim. It's more for steering and signalling. Sound doesn't travel that well underwater, so..." he trailed off and shrugged.
Her question brought something up, however. Merope's tail moved back into place behind him as he wiggled the fins on his back. "Maybe... Maybe I could swim using these?" He suggested rather dubiously. "How are you supposed to swim, anyway? Do you know?"

Hearing how he used his tail to signal sounded pretty cool, but it left Astra wondering how he usually swam to swim in his normal form if he didn't use his tail like a fish would.
"T-that could work.." She said to his suggestion, although she wasn't exactly sure how..Maybe he could use them like wings and fly underwater?
...Maybe not
As to how she was supposed to swim? "Well...Umm,,I think I'm supposed to kick my legs, and move my arms like this" She made big circles with her arms, trying to remember how she had sene others do it. "But I've also seem my mini pets swim, they kinda do it like this" She then made little circles moves with her arms, which..didn't look like swimming in the slightest.

"Mini!" Merope exclaimed, clapping his hands together. "Why didn't I think of that? If we gathered some up and then set them loose in the pool, then --" he broke off, frowning. "Well. We could watch them swim and try to emulate them... Except then we'd be stuck trying to catch them again. I don't think the school staff would be happy about loose minis in the pool."
He stared at the pool, thinking. "Maybe... Maybe if we could float? I don't need to breathe so I can stay underwater for long periods of time, but you... I don't think you can breathe underwater?" He looked at Astra and squinted. "Can you?"

"But what if was our own personal minis?" Astra suggested. "If they're well trained, it could work...although, I dunno if anyone else house trains their minis..." She hoped they did... but the idea of having lots of mini's in the pool sounded fun! As long as they weren't minis that would try to eat her...
She then shook her head. "No, I can't breathe underwater..." But could she float? "Erm..well..I...don't know?" She looked to the pool nervously. "S-should I try?" As long as Merope was here, she should be alright..maybe...

At the mention of trained minis, Astra was given the sort of Look that was reserved for disbelief, shock, and did I just hear that correctly? "A trained minipet?" Merope slowly asked, shaking his head. "I've been to the minipet training class, but that device only works on one mini. He's stopped trying to hork up fireballs since then, but the rest?" He snorted, dismissing it. "None of mine would do, I think."
Merope stared at the pool, then pointed towards one end. "Maybe the shallow end?" He suggested, "If you start sinking I can pick you up, I think. That and if it gets too rough, our feet can touch the bottom." Not that it mattered to him -- his feet touched the bottom no matter what. Usually. "We can try to figure out the basics, then go from there."

Astra looked a little crestfallen at those words. While she had problems with her Shenglong Ryu, she believed he was getting better! And she was sure someone would have a well trained minipet! somewhere...
"Wait you mean theres a shallow end?" She perked up immediately. "I didn't know this pool had a shallow end!" It was a perfect concept! In her excitement, she flew to the other side of the pool, forgetting to wait for Merope, to see if there really was a short end. And indeed there was! She didn't jump in though, Quickly disappearing around a corner only to reappear a few minutes later in a swimsuit. Only then did she approach the pool water, finding the stairs and carefully climbing down.
Thankfully, she was just tall enough to stand upright in the pool. But only just
