Xiu gasped sharply in surprise when Bataar suddenly swung at him. The soul conduit moved out of instinct and ducked beneath Bat's arm, dancing away from the larger male. "What the hell Bataar!" Xiu cried out angrily, kicking up the left over ash from the fire pit and clouding the air, hoping to buy himself some time. "I thought we were doing this honorably!" He had at least expected that. Sure, he was going to lose. He knew it and he was certain that Bataar knew it too. Hopefully though, the surprised punch meant that the man was going to take this seriously.

"And it's not a stupid bet," he added, pressing back further and frantically deciding what to do. Bataar was probably going to come at him somehow and the first thing he did was kick Bataar's bow away from where the place he had dropped his earlier. With the thing in the bushes, Xiu was at least confident that he wasn't going to be shot.

"Well?" He added challengingly as he drew a piece of paper from the folds of his robe. There was something scribbled on it, but it was unclear what. "I'm ready now you jerk." And then Xiu bit the tip of his thumb, smearing the the piece of paper and activating the charm, feeling the power of it flow into him.

And then Xiu stood there, letting the power flow over him like water. He gazed at Bataar his heart pounding a million miles and minute and feeling like it was burst from his chest. This was his first real fight he was was going to do his best. He was going to put everything he had into it and make it work. He didn't need Bai's help or Sakn's help. He was going to do it all himself.

Bataar was just as surprised as Xiu had been, but this was because of the other man’s reaction. He’d wanted a fight, so Bat had brought out the punches. Wasn’t that how these things always worked? There was hardly any honor in fighting in the first place, but if you wanted some you were bound to get it face-to-face. It wasn’t as if he’d come up from behind like some nasty assassin, after all. ”Xiu, I am hardly going to tell you if and when I’m going to punch you-- that’s not honor, it’s stupid.” the captain snorted, watching Xiu kick up dust and ashes as if it were some masterful repellant.

Melee fighting was the style that he tended to conform to, but most Lunarians(the ones he didn’t want to kill, at least) couldn’t really handle that. ”Yeah, it was.” Bat argued back, hoping that they weren’t going to bicker throughout the entirety of the battle. It was hard enough to think up insults for Yue Lao without also having to give thought to Xiu’s imperfections.

He glanced briefly at the piece of paper, opening his mouth incredulously, about to explain that they needed to actually fight as opposed to write notes to one another(he was, after all illiterate). But Xiu looked odd now-- empowered, and a little more confident, if slightly anxious. ”What was that?” the Mongol demanded, backing away slightly, his fingers briefly closing over the hilt of the knife on his waist before snaking up to grasp that of his sword, which he drew.

It had taken him this long to realize that Xiu was a soul conduit and, as a result, didn’t fight at all like he himself did. In short, he was going to have to be extremely careful here. Soul conduits were entirely different from fighters, and perhaps just as deadly, after all, even if he knew that Xiu wasn’t going to gravely injure him.

"You could have waited until I was standing at least," Xiu grumped at Bataar, taking a few steps to the man's left. He didn't really want to continue arguing with Bataar though. After all, the man was doing him a favor and it wouldn't be kind of Xiu if he kept needling him. Sure, it might make the fight last longer, but Bataar would probably get riled enough that he decided to REALLY stick it to Xiu.

Taking a deep breath, Xiu back up, making a complicated gesture with his hand. He couldn't help but smile at Bataar's question, even as he eyed the male's sword a little worriedly. "I'm hardly going to tell you," Xiu replied, using Bataar's own words against him. He couldn't help that either. Bat had left himself clearly open for a verbal assualt and Xiu couldn't stand not to make the jib. However, it would probably prove fatal if Bataar took offense. Perhaps he should stick with keep his mouth shut after all.

With a flick of his wrist, Xiu finally completed the spell while still managing to keep on his toes. If Bataar came at him he'd dodge hopefully. With the completion of the spell, the air shimmer around Xiu hand as water began to form. The droplets twisted together, forming a long, thick whip of sorts that Xiu was able to physically hold onto.

"I'm officially ready if case you wanted to know," Xiu called, gripping his elemental weapon tightly as he urged his heart to calm it's rapid beating. This was it, he supposed. With Bataar's curved sword glinting rather evilly in the sun, Xiu had a feeling that he might be in over his head. Despite that, he tried to keep thinking positive.

Thinking to at least make the first move, Xiu cracked the water whip, sending it flying at Bataar's face. The entire ordeal took mere second, but to Xiu, it felt much longer than that.

Bataar didn’t deal very well with complaints or bickering in the midst of any sort of battle, whether he was supposed to be friends with his opponent or not. He shot Xiu a knowing look, one that probably explained well enough that he wasn’t about to cut the soul conduit any slack just because they were on speaking terms, or just because they were doing this on the whim of the other man. Besides, the Mongol was beginning to look faintly infuriating as Xiu refused to tell him exactly how he was planning on using his foolish little piece of paper(it had writing on it-- did he want Bat to read it or something?).

The whip made out of water didn’t please him, to say the least. Bat gripped his sword, staring at the transparent weapon, a thousand thoughts flowing through his head, the chief of which was that he really did not like fighting with soul conduits for a reason. ”Why can’t you have made a sword?” he asked, a hint of irritation in his tone as he tried to figure out if it was even possible to deal with a weapon made of water, or if it had the ability to cut him. Unfortunately, it would be impossible to ask all of his questions in turn.

Suddenly, the whip was flying toward his face. He twisted away, looking concerned, but the weapon briefly made contact with his cheek, bringing out a sharp, stinging pain. It seemed that Xiu was indeed serious about this fight, and now Bat would have to pay him back, anyway. ”I assure you, metal is a lot more painful than moisture.” he declared, hopefully damaging the soul conduit’s confidence as he brandished his sword, slicing through the air as he drew nearer to his target. This was hard-- he didn’t actually want to seriously injure the other Noble.

Xiu couldn't help but snicker when Bataar groused at him about the whip. "I'm sorry," he sort of apologized, still laughing. "It's the only thing I know how to make just yet. I'll make a sword next time." Maybe. Xiu really was still learning how to channel his water. Now that he'd finally managed to control his energy enough to stop the lost souls from finding him, Xiu had been able to focus said energies into more useful things. Not that fighting was really useful in his opinion, but at least now he knew that he could protect others through his own abilities.

With a yelp, Xiu danced away from Bataar's sword, his eyes wide as they focused on the twirling blade. Okay, that was a bit scary. Looking around them both a bit frantically, Xiu stalled making a hit. "It can be more painful, I guess," he admitted, looking between his whip and Bataar's ankle. Holding his breath, Xiu struck out at Bataar's ankle, hoping to keep the large male from advancing. If Bat had been a smaller opponent then Xiu thought he might have tried upending him, but their body mass was just too different. How much did Bataar weigh anyways? Too much if Xiu was having to think about it. So, he ended up just hoping to make Bataar jump a little bit.

This match was turning out to be a bit more scary than Xiu had anticipated. Thankfully, Bataar didn't seem to be trying to REALLY maim him. Xiu didn't want to do the same to Bataar. He'd really just wanted to spar with Bat like he did with Sakn. The soul conduit was back to the vain hope of having a virulent male admit when he'd been beaten. Bataar, like Sakn, didn't seem the type to ever admit something like that, at least in Xiu's experience.

Bataar looked irritated as Xiu mentioned that, instead of a sword, he'd decided to learn how to use a whip first. "Well, swords are far better than whips." he explained, as if he were a great teacher or something of the sort. Clearly, the Mongol was a very opinionated sort in the first place, and tended to think that there was only certain ways to properly fight-- his favorite form of battling was with his fists, but his sword worked well at times. It had beheaded its fair share of Legionnaires, at the very least, and that was enough to prompt some pride on the captain's part.

In any case, he was going to have to concentrate on the match at hand to give Xiu a serious fight. He smiled at the other Noble's look of fear upon realizing that the hunk of metal in his hand was a usable weapon. In this, he was more joking around than anything else. He didn't actually want to injure the soul conduit in any way. It took him too long, however, to realize that the whip made of water was flying at his ankle, tripping him up and almost forcing his very face to the ground.

The man caught himself with his hands and stood up quickly, brushing off his clothing and glancing at his scraped palms for a moment before picking up his sword off of the ground and advancing further towards Xiu. "Do you want me to trip you?" he demanded with a bit of a grimace as he adjusted his grip on his sword.

To carry through with his question, he darted forward, aiming a hit with the flat of his sword at Xiu's ankles. It was always good to repay such a favor, in the captain's opinion. Besides, this would be a good lesson for the young man-- if he wasn't able to avoid falling himself he'd get to see exactly what it was like.

"It worked?!" Xiu cried just as Bataar nearly went face down in the dirt. The soul conduit had jerked in surprise, nearly letting his whip fall to the ground. Astounded, he stared at Bataar, not even thinking to essentially kick the man while he was down. This was amazing! Xiu hadn't expected that at all. Perhaps he was stronger than he thought. Although, Xiu had to bite his lip to keep from asking if Bataar was alright. Those scrapes didn't look bad or anything from his angle, but he knew from experience that they did sting. Swallowing down yet another offer of help, Xiu shifted nervously from foot to foot.

"No I don't want you to--GAH!" Xiu darted backwards but it hadn't been much help when Bataar all but lunged at him with his sword. For a moment, Xiu was sure he was about to lose his ankle, but when he only fell smartly on his butt, he breathed a sigh of relief. Heart pounding madly in his chest, Xiu panted from the sudden adrenaline rush. "No, I don't want you to trip me," he finally huffed out, despite it being after the fact. He wanted to glare at Bataar since his ankle was now throbbing a bit, but Xiu only felt himself smiling up at the Mongolian.

Eyes still on Bataar, Xiu slowly got up, dusting off the front of his shirt with one hand. Not sure how to even begin winning a losing battle, Xiu licked his lower lip before he suddenly flung a ball of water at Bataar's face. If it hit, maybe the male would be distracted enough that Xiu could disarm him or something. Thankfully, the water bubble was just that, a bubble full of water, and would only douse Bataar instead of actually hurting him at all.

Bataar really wasn't entirely pleased as Xiu displayed his delight at having tripped him. He hoped the soul conduit wasn't planning on spreading around that tidbit of information, either, because things like that could become rather mortifying. All the same, any of the frustration he may have felt for the young man died down considerably when he noted that he was obviously nervous. That was enough to provoke some pity out of Bataar, and to make him reconsider the idea of slicing Xiu up like a vegetable.

Besides, the soul conduit had tripped and fallen, which was enough of a revenge for the Mongol. "Well, obviously you don't." he declared smugly, refraining from offering any help for the other Noble to get up. That was the reality of a fight, and Bat was doing his best to give the soul conduit the full experience, embarrassment and all. He himself lost almost as frequently as he won, which could always be a little on the disheartening side.

The Mongol wasn't sure how to react, however, when he noted that a ball of water was now flying towards his face. He stared at it, failing to act, until it smashed into his face and dripped down to soak his shoulders. Bataar looked a little dumbstruck as he dealt with it, and bit his lip, looking more than a little unhappy with his surprise, for clearly it had just been a bubble of water. All the same, he was going to repay Xiu for that, too.

He brandished his sword and fixed his eyes on the young man before quickly advancing and smacking the flat of his sword as hard as he could upon Xiu's head, laughter escaping from his lips as he did so. It must have looked absurd-- like he'd gone in to decapitate and had then failed miserably. It was funny to think of what Xiu may have been thinking.

Xiu stuck his tongue out at Bat for that remark. He nearly almost laughed when Bataar was drenched with the water. This fight was so not turning out how he'd expected it to be. To him, Bataar seemed too much of a sweetheart. Sure, the mongol was strong and knowledgeable in fighting, but he was obviously NOT a cruel heartless b*****d. Xiu knew some men who would have taken the chance to beat the s**t out him just because he'd challenge them. It was that, and they knew that they'd be able to beat Xiu up at any time. If anything, Xiu thought Bataar was very really nice, and despite everything, really appreciated it.

The youth had been so busy building Bat up that he didn't expect the man to REALLY come at him. He barely had a moment to react and even then it was took late. With a startled cry, Xiu stumbled backwards, nearly tripping on his own feet. That sword was looking really, horribly sharp right about now since now it was coming towards his face. Xiu really yelled then, not sure if he wanted to scream or shout at Bataar to stop. He wasn't able to do much of either unfortunately.

When the hilt of Bataar's sword came down, Xiu uttered a startled gasp of surprise before everything went black. He hadn't even hit the ground before his whip dissolved and the energy around him dissipated. Crumpled in a blue heap on the ground with the top of his head bleeding slightly, Xiu would have wished Bat had finished him off if he'd been able to see how pathetic he looked. When Xiu woke up, he was going to be feeling very childish. Honestly, what had he been thinking? Not only had he lost this fight, but his dignity was (again) gone. Would he ever be strong enough to win a fight? It seemed that he'd lost against every single opponent he had come up against and it was not fair!

Bataar was, in truth, almost wholly benign. He knew for a fact that Xiu was not his enemy, and he was not about to treat him as such. The young man had merely come wanting a fight, perhaps for the sheer reality of it all, and he'd given him one to the best of his abilities. Luckily, neither of them seemed very injured at all, which was quite a relief. It might not have been so easy to play off if either of them were actually bleeding. All in all, Bataar considered the experience as decently provisionary for at least something in the way of knowledge for the soul conduit.

Besides, maybe Xiu would feel better now that he'd gotten the challenge out of the way. Bat would even do him a favor and forget the bet. Xiu's yell was, however, extremely amusing at the Mongol found himself cackling despite himself. There was no helping his laughter, but he stopped abruptly in order to observe the fact that the soul conduit was no unconscious. The man shook his head slightly and sighed, uncertain of what he ought to do with the corpse(although it was, obviously, no such thing).

It would probably be best to allow Xiu to wake up on his own so that he wouldn't be too mortified upon realizing that he'd lost the proposed fight. Yes-- that seemed like the best course of action right about now. Besides, he didn't want to stay and figure out how the soul conduit was about to deal with the massive, quickly-forming bruise he'd left on his head.

"Sorry. Didn't mean to hit you that hard." Bat sighed apologetically, although he didn't look terribly concerned. It wasn't all that bad, and Xiu would recover with no problem(well, if one didn't count his pride).

The Mongol walked away from the clearing slowly, whistling a little to himself. It was good to win, at the very least.
