Orlina stopped dead in the middle of the hallway as two familiar Candidates came forward. The way one of them was holding the folded towel in his hands and the way the second kept looking around made them all too suspicious. They, too, stopped when they saw her, and Orlina smiled and crossed her arms.

"Not again?" She asked cheerfully, and got a glare from Yadil. Both boys were weyrbrats, as she was, and they knew that too many times caught doing things they shouldn't be by the Candidatemaster could get them removed from Candidacy. Yet every so often... "Really?"

"Go away, brat," Koruman suggested, his tone angry but not mean. He was never the first to throw a punch, he just tended to help finish. "You'll get in as much trouble as us for not minding your own business." When she remained silent, the two boys stared at her.

Orlina stared back. Since their other friend had Impressed, he'd stopped spending so much time with them and Orlina hadn't seen him stir so much as a hair of trouble since. It must be the good influence of his dragon, or that was what she thought. A creature that was a little more "buckle down and work" than the Candidate had been. It wasn't that these were bad people; they just... tended to be mean when it came to new Candidates. This wouldn't be the first time she had gotten into a scuffle with them over their treatment of new blood.

"What's the matter?" She taunted, tilting her head and looking more like a little sprite than usual. She couldn't back down from what was likely to be a spark of fun in her dull week! "Worried about how close you are to aging out?"

They weren't all that close. Yadil was 18, but Koruman was only 17. Both had several Turns left before they needed to worry. But Orlina had known them-- been a rival of theirs-- since she was 8 Turns old. Yadil didn't have a safe temper. Sure enough, his soft curse was the only warning she got as he stepped forward to push her over. She ducked and was knocked over by Koruman. She'd promised her fostermother last time that it wouldn't happen again, but... it had been four months since her last scuffle! It wasn't like it was even close to last time!

Orlina, small as she was, managed to roll away from the kick Yadil aimed at her. She was no talented brawler, but she had experience and although her movements were awkward, she manged to get off the floor and avoid a majority of what the boys were throwing at her. She only struck back when she really had an opening. She grinned as she landed a punch on Yadil's inner thigh that made him dance away, but it was quickly changed to surprise as she was knocked over again.

Finished with chores and lessons for the day, Kazairl had headed straight to the kitchens for an extra bite to eat. Dinner was yet to come, but at six feet and three inches he was a “growing boy” and the kitchen staff were accustomed to seeing him coming by to filch or beg for rolls. Despite the sheer mass of food consumed by the Candidate of eighteen turns, it seemed it would never help fill out the slightly gaunt cast to his features that forever made it seem he’d never been blessed with a proper meal.

Striding from the kitchens and grinning at his impudence, Kazairl juggled a scalding hot meat pie in his calloused hands. He was so busy trying to keep from scorching his fingers while getting a few nips at the crust that he didn’t notice the scuffle down the hall until the noise of it interrupted his concentration. He looked up in time to see a slight figure – a young girl – strike out at one of the older boys only to be bowled over by the other lad all but twice her size. There was a hiccup in his step, and this his stride quickened as his face went black. After standing and failing for several turns himself, he recognized the pair of boys almost immediately. They had similarities and differences of opinion before, but he’d never dealt with them enough to see them as friends or enemies. Well, until now anyway. “Hey!” He shouted, his voice making a startling boom in the hall. “Let off her.” One candidate toting a meatpie might not have been much of a threat usually, but Kazairl was quite a bit larger than even most ranked adults, and he had something of a reputation for solving problems physically and doing a more than fair job of it. Of course, fighting was poorly tolerated in the weyr and Kazairl never intended serious injury and tended to keep his fists at his sides when there were eggs on the sands, but the scene before him now was too tempting.

The whole group froze at the loud voice calling over to them. Orlina saw Koruman turn to see who was shouting and then both boys lost their fighting stance. When Orlina turned around herself, she realized why. Whoever this was, he was huge.

"It's not your business, Kazairl," Yadil responded, still angry enough to ignore the obvious danger. Orlina had to assume it was a numbers thing. He saw himself and Koruman and assumed that would be enough, while conveniently forgetting about the littler opponent on the ground. Orlina stayed where she was for now and kept her mouth shut, glancing between her two nemeses and Kazairl, who they apparently knew. Well, if they were enemies too that meant good things for her. He might help out. She glanced over at the other boy near her. Koruman, on the other hand, didn't look so sure and he backed up half a step, his foot crunching into the towel full of sand that had been dropped in the ensuing scuffle and forgotten.

"Yad, she's not worth it," Koruman muttered, but that only seemed to incense the other boy, who pulled his shoulders back and lifted his chin threateningly.

Orlina's wide hazel eyes slid back to the monster down the hall. She hated to say it and sound mean, but Yadil had never seemed very smart.

As they let off the girl, Kazairl’s stride slowed and his eyes slid towards Koruman when the boy gave his reluctant support. A grin grew on his face as he redirected his attention to Yardkil – or something like a grin at least, though it closer resembled a canine baring fangs. “Worth it? Her?” he answered, his voice low and eager. “I’ll tell you what’s worth it, Yardil: taking the chance to see how many pieces I can break you into.” He was hoping, privately, that with his focus on Yardil, Koruman would take the opportunity to shy his way out of the fight and from there it wouldn’t take much so much effort and noise to send the more stubborn candidate on his way. He hoped so anyway, not that he’d much regret taking the both of them if it came anyway.

Rather than belabor the intimidation process any longer, Kazairl suddenly sprang forward, flinging the hot meatpie at Yardil’s head, then swinging for his gut.

Yadil flung his arms up to block the meatpie from hitting his face, and took the fist fully to the stomach. All the air went out of him and he collapsed, gasping desperately as Koruman threw himself into Kaz to give his friend time to recover. Orlina pushed herself backwards so that she wouldn't be stepped on and pushed herself to her feet quickly. Yadil's similar movements as he regained his breath were much slower. Orlina watched for a moment, but she had no intention of staying out of it. She just needed an opening where she wouldn't take an elbow to the eye.

"Look out!" She cried as Yadil swung for Kaz's side while Koruman was still distracting him. Orlina ran forward, throwing a nasty right hook at Yadil's stomach. If he didn't like having the wind knocked out of him, lets see how he liked it almost happening again!

"You--" Yadil started, turning on Orlina with a snarl.

So much for that hope. Kazairl turned and dodged back from Koruman, but at the next opening he rushed for the smaller lad, full of a fury that was usually only seen in especially malicious whers. He’d been in enough fight to know it was best to end them with swift vigor, but Koruman wasn’t one to be ousted so easily and gave back what he was given with some spirit as well. Kaz had an advantage though: he was simply bigger and could take more hits. Taking advantage of this, he was struck several times as he traded defense for attack. He was too occupied to be concerned for Yadil until a warning came from the girl he’d forgotten as well. Taking advantage of Koruman’s distraction as the other boy looked to see what caused the outburst, he swept a leg under Koruman, felling the lad for at least the moment.

Turning back to see Yadil closing on Orlina, Kaz grinned wickedly and, folding his arm, twisted and drove his elbow into the Yadil’s back. It wasn’t an honorable blow by any means, but it sent the lad staggering.

She only knew her warning had taken effect when Kazairl suddenly loomed up over Yadil. She dodged out of the way, her small feet nimbly keeping her from being knocked over when the boy staggered towards her from the blow to his back.

Yadil grabbed at the wall, knowing if he reached for his back he'd just look stupid. He turned and glared at Kazairl, while somewhere to the side Koruman picked himself back up. He looked nervously at Yadil. He hadn't wanted this fight in the first place, and he was more than ready to give it up. However, Yadil didn't even look at his friend before he turned and ran off down the hall with as little limp as he could manage. Koruman didn't wait, he followed his friend at a run as well.

Orlina looked after them, knowing this was only until the next time, then looked up at smiled brightly at Kaz. He was a stranger until she knew his name, but despite that he'd helped her out anyway. That spoke very well of him or his upbringing or both. She wouldn't point out the obvious, that he hadn't made any friends by helping her, but his sacrifice bore some need for response. Well, maybe that meant he had made a friend. She'd deal with Yadil and Koruman another day, but she was only able to do that because he'd stepped in.

"Thank you." He'd pretty much saved her from a rider finding them out, and for some reason, riders always took fighting as being trouble. Orlina didn't get it. "I'm Orlina."

Kazairl bounced readily on the balls of his feet and, grinning with the wicked eyes of a feline raised his hands and flexed them into fists. His chest hurt in a few place and there was a quickly swelling spot on his cheek bone that would blacken and puff up enough to squint his eye by nightfall, but even sweaty with effort and battered he looked as springy and ready to fight as a newly hatched wher. “That is?” he challenged, but the two boys were already setting off down the hall. As the sound of their footfall clattered into the distance Kazairl’s weight dropped more wearily only his heels, but he turned to Orlina with a bright enough grin that had gone a bit lopsided on account of his banged-up cheek. “Kazairl,” he introduced with a brief nod of respect. “A pleasure to meet you, but we ought to get going before the Candidatemaster shows up and finishes what those two started, eh?” He jerked his head to the side and gestured for her to come along with him. He was curious about why the sprightly young girl had gotten in a tangle with the older two boys, but was certain it was a conversation that could be held on the move. He expected it wouldn’t be long until the queen Rose, and he needed to not be withheld from the next hatching. “Good job with Yadil there. You’re a spunky little one, eh? You’re not hurt, are you?” he prompted, touching her shoulder as though to guide her into moving to match his long legs.
