Arthur trudged along under the beating sun. He had pretty much concluded that his luck was very much at an end, and that it was about time for a change of pace...He almost considered going home, not to some nook he was doing all his roving from...home...his real Home. The thought left a sour aftertaste in his mouth.
He stopped by a pool and dipped his head down to drink. Once finished he pulled his head back and stared at his reflection, droplets of water from his muzzle breaking up the image. He looked tired to himself. He let out a long sigh and started making for the edge of the forest and the welcome shade.

Aalun picked her way through the woods carefully and quietly, the kirin in her blood telling as she moved from one shadow to another with barely a sound.
She wore only her halter, with its horns surrounding her face. She was well trained in their usage, as she came from a long line of uniquely skilled fighting horses who's horns were a mark of status. How a kirin had gotten mixed up in their family she was never sure, but it gave her a look alnd grace all her own. Even in combat she was graceful and few could stand up to her speed.
They'd been one though...a handsome stallion from a rival family known for their size and strength. She shook her head to clear it. She could think about that later, and all the things she'd do to him for breaking her heart when she'd been young filly barely to her full growth.

Arthur sagged with relief at reaching the shade of the trees. It wasn't much cooler but it was enough for the stallion. He leaned against a tree and started to drift off.
An instant later he was awake. He wasn't sure what it was, but there was something happening somewhere. He closed his eyes, his ears flicking back and forth trying to hear it again.
Finally, there it was. It was faint, but there it was. The sounds of combat, and a battle cry that nagged at his memory. It was something he should remember, but couldn't at the moment. That wasn't important though. What was though, was that someone was in trouble. Without a second thought, Arthur plunged through the trees towards the sound of the fighting.

Aalun hadn't really known where she was going, she'd just sort of blindly picked her way. So it had come to a great shock to her when she'd accidentally stumbled across the sunken cave that belonged to a small group of wolves. The strong scent of pine had blocked the smell of the predators, and Aalun cursed herself for being so stupid as she'd turned and run the other way, with three on her heels.
She'd finally found an open enough place to turn and fight. She lowered her head and brought the horns on her halter into play keeping the pack occupied with slashes and her hooves.

Arthur crashed into the clearing just a few moments later. "Don't worry! I'm here to--" he trailed off and watched the fight before him.
The mare spun and wheeled with grace he'd only seen before a long time ago when he'd been younger. Her hooves lashing out taking one of the wolves hard in the side while the horns on her halter slashed at the ones going for her face. One of the horns already glinted wetly with blood from one of the wolves.
Upon noticing him, the wolves turned tail and ran back through the brush. He watched slowly as the mare turned toward him. His eyes widened and his heart skipped a beat.

Aalun turned to face the spectator of her fight. She tossed her forelock out of her eyes before focusing on the other. She stared in stunned disbelief.
She felt the stirrings of old emotions in her heart, but quickly stifled them, and narrowed her eyes. "Oh, I know who you are Arthur Flew! And I certainly don't need any help from you!" she said trying to sound as harsh as possible. "I'm no damsel in distress! I can take care of myself."

Arthur opened his mouth and then closed it not sure what to say. "I never said you couldn't!" he said quickly. "I just, well when I heard the fight I thought that..." he trailed off then tried to start again. "Its...nice to see you again Aalun." he offered her a goofy smile, but remained well aware of the bloody horn on her halter. This was no mare to cross, she'd been trained since she was just a filly to wield those horns and he had a decent respect for them. Especially with a girl he already knew he was in the wrong with.

Aalun narrowed her eyes. "Oh is it?" she said annoyed. "Is that why you ran off before our ceremony?"
She stamped a foot and tossed her forelock out of her eyes again and looked him over. He looked to be in piece, healthy and whole, much to her annoyance. She wanted him to have suffered a bit for leaving family, clan and bride-to-be, but that was a bit to much to ask for she expected. Arthur had always had an annoying habit of being able to ignore his duties and go on his merry way, and it was something she'd loved about him, but right now she only had a high desire to bite him.
"Well?" she asked. "What have you to say for yourself?"

Arthur winced slightly. Of course she wouldn't have forgotten that, how could she. "Ah...well..." he wilted under the stare of those blue eyes. They were actually quiet pretty when she smiled or was laughing he remembered, but they were like two chips of ice right now.
"I...I just..." he fumbled for an answer that wouldn't anger her. His top answers were all in that category which were along the lines of, 'I wasn't ready' and 'You were to young to understand.' He tried to think of something else and failed miserably. He'd never been any good with girls. Small wonder his parents had gotten frustrated and picked a girl for him, of course there had been some other motivations for them picking Aalun, but still.
He finally sighed and gave up. "I have no excuse." he said watching her closely.

Aalun's face twitched slightly. "I see." she said. She looked away and took a deep breath. At least he was honest, he could have tried to defend himself, which would have only made her madder. His admittance he was wrong took the wind out of her sails.
Suddenly she was overcome with an urge to cry with frustration. She swallowed hard, keeping herself from doing so. "I see." she managed to say again in a quiet voice.

Arthur's ears flicked back as he watched her, his head drooping sadly. He had no idea what to do now. Mares were bad enough, upset mares were even worse. He looked at his hooves and then slowly crept closer and hesitantly touched his nose to her neck. "I'm...sorry." he said quietly. He then backed away quickly still wary of those horns.
"I...was selfish, and stupid, and probably a lot of other things." he looked away. "I won't ask you to forgive me...that's a lot to ask for." he gave her an awkward smile.

She stared at him. Did he really think a smile would fix years of heartbreak and betrayal? She sniffed and then turned away. "Good, it is a lot to ask for." she said. She pulled her head up and took a deep breath calming herself. Her ear twitched as she heard running water and took off in that direction, she needed a cool drink and to clean her horns.
She'd let him stew, he deserved it. He deserved more than that though. She wanted to hurt him like he'd hurt her, but she didn't think it was possible. He didn't love her, he'd never loved her. He'd probably never loved anyone, except maybe his ego.
She found the stream and tilted her head letting the water run over her horns and wash away the blood. Once the water was clean she drank herself. She knew he'd followed her, but he could wait.

The smile faded as he watched her. He was doomed, he knew it in every fiber of his being. He stood still waiting for her to turn and drive one of those horns into his chest. He figured if he stood still it would hurt less. Instead she walked off.
He blinked and watched her go, then decided he'd better follow her. She didn't know this area like he did, and there were skinwalkers in the woods and Kalona that hunted the plains around here. He trailed after her to the stream and watched her clean her horns and then drink. His ears flicked listening to her. He'd really missed her, despite whatever she thought. If there was one mare he'd ever come close to understanding it was Aalun, but he had to confess to himself, he saw her as a warrior...like a brother...hard to imagine yourself settling down and having kids with your brother.
"Aalun..." he said quietly when she'd had her fill.

Aalun's ears flicked towards him as he said her name. She debated ignoring him, but there was something about the way he said her name. Then again there had always been something about the way he said her name that sent little shivers up and down her spine. Why couldn't he see that thought? Why couldn't he understand that she...possibly...She shook her head, there was no use going down that path. It only lead back to heartbreak. Besides wasn't it better this way? They were warhorses, trained in the art of combat, what if they'd stayed home and something happened, calling their families to battle, what if one of them died! It was better to be alone, she tried to tell herself, than to leave the other alone.
But a small part of herself traitorously whispered to her that home was a long way away, and he was right there. All she had to do was turn and forgive him everything. Aalun frowned, would that fix anything honestly?
She stamped a foot as he softly called her name again. She turned in irritation, "What Arthur!?" she demanded.
