Butterfly's Best Friend

Sprite carried on with her day of roaming the forests, valleys and the edge of the mountain’s base in search of a pack that would be a right fit for her but also searching for any contact with other wolves for nothing other than company. Even for a short while to ease the bite of solitude. Now that she thought about it, Sprite wasn’t made for this life of a lone otherwise she wouldn’t be so restless to settle down somewhere. Hopefully she could find a place to live otherwise…Otherwise she might die of this loneliness. Sighing softly, the female was currently walking along side a long stream of cool water on this bright sunny day. The sky was a brilliant blue hue with white fluffy clouds and the breeze was just right, the perfect day. It was days like these that Sprite enjoyed most, especially when she was a pup playing with butterflies. Thinking of that brought about sweet yet long gone memories from the past…

’Come back here Mr.Buttafree!’ The little green and yellow pup shouted at the lovely multicolored butterfly flying around her head teasingly and ever so elusive. Little Sprite ran about clumsy and cute, her tongue lolling about as she tried her hardest to capture the fluttering little insect. The multicolored butterfly flew this way and that, making the round bellied pup stumble and growl softly at not being able to get it. The butterfly flew high away, Sprite running as fast as her short legs could carry her until she collided with a large green leg that belonged to her father. Lime looked down at his daughter with an amused look. ‘Now little one, be careful where you run.’ His deep voice rumbled. Looking up cutely at her father, Sprite gave a small pout standing up and running around his leg. ‘Bu-bu-bu-bu-but it was Mr. Buttafree’s fault!’ She mumbled until her father grasped her with his teeth at the scruff of her neck and started to carry her towards their small territory.

Sprite wiggled and squirmed uncontrollable, laughing that she was being carried and feeling like she was flying. Lime rolled his eyes at his rambunctious pup and set her down. ‘Sprite calm down, love. You’ll scare away the butterfly with all that wiggling.’ He chided gently. Sprite’s eyes went wide then darted around for that butterfly. “Noooooo! I want the buttafree father!’ The father wolf chuckled and nodded, turning his pup around with his paw easily so that she was tucked against his leg, leaning his head down to whisper in her ear softly. ’Then listen and listen closely, little one. If you stay still, the butterfly will come to you in greeting. But if you start chasing it, you’ll scare him away.’ Lime looked at his daughter with hidden amusement. ’Can you do this for me? Sprite looked up and nodded her head quite vigorously that would leave her and anyone reading this dizzy. The father wolf stepped back away from his daughter to watch her stay still. For a while nothing happened but the little pup didn’t move a single muscle. Finally her holding still paid off as the teasing butterfly came closer, landing on her nose as it flapped its wings at her in greeting. Sprite had her eyes crossed to look at the butterfly and giggled, her body starting to wiggle as excitement started to take over.

’Look father! Mr. Buttafree is saying hello!’ She squeed as she turned her head quickly to see her father but the butterfly flew off her nose. Lime nodded while he laughed softly. ’Yes little one but now you’ve let him fly away.’ Nodding with his head in the direction of the now leaving butterfly, Sprite whimpered softly and wanted to go after it but her father was too fast for her and stopped the pup from going after it. ’Let it be free, Sprite. One day he will return to greet you again.’ Looking at the butterfly, the little green and yellow pup nodded, sighing mournfully at it. ’Come, we should go with your mother.’ He said, watching his little girl glumly walk in the direction of their small territory where mother was waiting.

********

The now grown wolf of that green and yellow colored fur snapped out of her memory of a long ago past as something touched her nose. Crossing her eyes she stared at a familiar looking butterfly from her puphood and smiled. It was the same butterfly that her father said would greet her again someday….That day was today and it warmed her completely. “Hello again. I’ve missed you little friend.” The butterfly flapped its wings as if in understanding until it started to fly away from her, turning to move on. Watching the butterfly leave Sprite had felt that the void inside her heart filled up a little bit with that little visitor. “Goodbye my friend.” She murmured knowing that she would never see the same butterfly again. But it did make this day that much more perfect and special to her.

All I want is love

The look in their eyes told it all. The lightest brush against each other spoke volumes. That secret smile that only the other knew about told a story all of its own. Lemon, a lovely light yellow female wolf with dark yellow markings watched her beloved mate, Lime a perfect green wolf, walked beside her as he watched their daughter run about in front of them with her wild curiosity. The green male with the pinkish eyes looked at his love and winked with a playfulness that was still present in their old ages. Sprite stopped, poking her head out from a bush she happened to jump in as she watched her mother giggle like a young pup as her father nipped playfully at his female. Nipping back, Lemon started to run off from Lime who followed in pursuit. Blinking some, Sprite went after her parents but couldn’t keep up as much but only watched as both elders act like pups.

Following her parents, Sprite stopped a few paces away hidden by the shade of the trees and small shrubs, watching her parents frolic like little pups with their playful growls and nips, with their running around chasing each other and playing little games. It was an interesting and beautiful sight to see Lemon and Lime together. They had known each other since they were small having developed a strong bond that went beyond what friendship and life mating was all about. You could see the deep connection between them that went beyond the physical but through their mind, heart and soul. It was as if they were made especially for each other and would always remain that way, like old souls from past lives in an never-ending cycle of reuniting until time ends for all. However for now they had each other in this moment, enjoying a quick reprieve to share this while they knew their little one wouldn’t be far off and finding trouble. They wanted to live in the moment and Sprite despite being small could see that clearly, smiling happily that her parents were happy…..

********

Time went by witnessing a love that rather than wane as the two mates got older, it grew every second of every day and continued to blossom into an incredible thing that made the now adolescent Sprite yearn for the same thing. The female grew to understand the meaning of love between mates since there were times when she was with either parent they would express the meaning of it in reference to the other mate. Sprite had pretended to not understand for being a youngster but no, she did understand. She wanted the same thing as her parents. If only to hang on to something in this lonely world since it was always the three of them. Sighing softly, Sprite watched her parents rest next to each other, nuzzling his each other’s fur and sharing little conversations that held meaning…

Lemon looked at her mate Lime, gazing at his pretty-in-pink eyes with such love and devotion it would make the heavens weep in joy of their creations while make the poets sing their ballads of what this love represents. Lime looked back in response knowing he wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but here with his love and the one thing that was the greatest thing about them, their only offspring Sprite. Both mates rested their heads together with their eyes closed to rest together….

The moon was bright, the night air a little chilly but then again it was better than having it humid and muggy. This night reminded Sprite of many nights in the past in watching her parents love each other and she yearned for that same love. She yearned for love with another wolf with everything she possessed to the point of weeping silently. Why was it so hard to find love? Was there something wrong with loving her? Sprite wasn’t evil or mean spirited. She was prickly if upset or pushed to far but sweet natured, responsible and easy going. If anything she would make anyone an ideal mate. And yet….Everyone else had found mates and deep love. Envy was a bitter and perhaps cruel emotion to feel but she felt that whenever she saw other pairs show that same glow of love and the fruits of that love coming in the shape of pups who in turn grew up to find love. Staring at the sky with the stars twinkling and winking down at her next to the great moon, Sprite prayed silently to the heavens to grant her love too…

[The Hunt

Crouched low and using the surrounding green as camouflage, Sprite was quiet as she observed her prey. It was a rabbit. It was plump from the fertile world of trees and other vegetation to feed it well. The fur was shiny and healthy looking of a rich brown with speckles of tan and black. The dark eyes focused on its meal, unaware that it was being watched by a she-wolf ready to pounce for her meal. There have been times where Sprite would be very careful about her choices in her prey not wanting to take away from the cycle of life that was around her. It was something she was very much aware of thanks to the teachings of her parents. ’Neither starve nor be greedy, pick wisely your preys because there are times where they will put up a fight and you’ll lose simply because you let your stomach guide you and not your mind’ Her father’s words echoed in Sprite’s mind softly as if he was there next to her teaching her along with her mother helping.

Sprite had been an adolescent learning to hunt through her parents who taught her the basics of it. They had to teach her that her body was a fierce weapon to be able to take down a prey to be able to survive in this world. They taught her how to breathe calmly and slowly to not make a noise with it and to always be clear minded when you are calculating the action to pounce on your prey. ’You must always think clearly Sprite. If you do not then you will surely starve over time with a muddled mind. Think clearly and wait for that right moment to spring into action.’ Her father’s voice whispered, motioning with his nose to watch their mother breathing calmly looking serene until she sprang into action to take down a deer.

They had taught her the various points to make the death of her prey short and to the point without making it suffer so. ’You never want to make your prey suffer. Everyone knows their place in this world. No matter if you are prey or predator you must understand the delicate balance for those you intend to eat. A swift death would be better than one who draws it out, almost playing with it. You never prolong it. Those words filled her mind making her shift differently then breathe even calmer her body now relaxed. Her eyes roved over the rabbit, moving forward lightly along the ground until she heard her parents voice once again in her mind. ’Never rush your lunge nor to the prey. Time it perfectly. Why? To be able to have a successful hunt to survive in this world. You are bound to have a few misses once in a while however that is because you made mistakes. By no means is there such thing as a perfect hunt but it is one when you have your prey and eat. Patience is necessary….Patience…..’

With great patience and what seemed like minutes Sprite sprung into action towards the rabbit…

Sprite held the lifeless creature between her powerful jaws, walking away from the spot she had taken him to settle down with her meal. That was a perfect hunt.
