MELToday was a harvesting day, and it saw the Apothecary roaming all over the Kitwana'antara lands in search of herbs. A careful paw to separate the chosen leaves or flowers from the parent plant, an even more careful claw to cut the stalk, and a leaf to dab at the leaking sap he left behind were his tools today. It was Mel's philosophy to take good care of the plants, for cautiousness today meant plenty for tomorrow.
He was concentrating hard, looking down at the ground, that he wasn't paying any attention at all to his surroundings. One would think that after traveling for months with Saskiranel he'd have learned better, and that it would stuck with him even weeks after they'd returned to the pride's lands. Well, he had learned. He'd learned that he could rely on Saskiranel for that sort of thing!
Not that that helped him now, but Mel was within the pridelands. What harm could there possibly be?

Pengana was enjoying a nice, slow walk. Having just spent an interesting afternoon teaching her vulture companion how to hunt (a past-time which he did not enjoy in the least), the two were conversing about the errors in their food-gathering techniques.
"Well, you shall just have to do better next time." Pengana said politely.
"Hardly." Uchafu replied. "I don't think I'd like to try again."
"But you haven't even pursued anything yet!" The wild dog responded, astonished. Uchafu shrugged his wings.
After a moment, Pengana realized there was a lion just up ahead. He was doing something strange to the plants. Figuring he was an Apothecary (since he was clearly within the pride's lands), Pengana approached him easily.
"Good day!" she greeted, all smiles and friendliness. Uchafu stuck close to her heels, eyes half-lidded in disinterest.

It was only long practice that kept Mel from damaging the precious plant when someone called out from nowhere. His teacher had boxed him on the ears often enough when he'd been in training - just because you got startled didn't mean you could allow that to flow to your paws and ruin the cutting. It could be the only one for miles around and if you wrecked it, then where would you be?
The orange lion told his racing heart to calm down as he gently sliced through the stem with a claw and added the cutting to his collection. Then, and only then, did he turn to see who was hailing him.
He hadn't expected a wild dog. Oh, there were several in the pride, he just didn't know any of them personally. Nor was he expecting the vulture familiar. Familiars just weren't common in a pride where people tended to die young.
"Hello there," he replied, still a bit stunned. Then common sense reasserted itself and the lion visibly got himself to focus. "What brings you out here?"

"Ohh, I was just..." the canine began, a bit uneasy herself at the unexpected reaction the lion had displayed. Perhaps she'd come up too suddenly...? Curse her enthusiasm...
Smiling it off, she continued, saying, "I was just taking a walk."
Uchafu cut her a side-ways glance, but shifted his gaze back to the Apothecary.
"I don't usually meet many pride members in this area. My name is Pengana. You're an Apothecary, correct? What are you collecting?"
Uchafu sighed. Oh, Pengana. There was a reason she didn't have many friends.

"Ah yes, I am an Apothecary. Mel," the lion added his name hastily, realizing he'd forgotten to introduce himself. "I'm taking cuttings of many different plants today - some for bruises, some for aches, some for pains, some that, um, are useful even if most don't realize it..."
Mel shut his mouth with a snap, realizing he was babbling. "It's, uh, nice to meet you Pengana. What is your rank in the pride?" He tried to turn the conversation back to the female and away from himself so that he wouldn't get further flustered.

The flood of new information was fascinating and Pengana's expression was the opposite of bored. When the lion switched to a different (and possibly difficult) subject, however, the wild dog snapped into a smile and, looking rather confident, replied,
"I'm a hunter. I'm pretty good, too!"
Of course, this was a lie, but Pengana was excellent at keeping secrets... She was sure she could've told the male (or anyone else, for that matter) that she performed secret tasks for the royals, but it was a bit easier this way.
Uchafu scoffed behind the dog's heels, a bit irritated at having been ignored. He was an important part of the pride, too, as far as he was concerned. Damn apothecaries...thinking they were better than everyone else just because they helped others feel better...hmph.
Suddenly there was a shoving paw behind the vulture's back and he stumbled forward, wings fluttering in shock.
"Oh, and this is Uchafu," Penny interjected happily.

"I'm pleased to meet both of you, Pengana, Uchafu," he replied courteously. It was still a little odd for him to see a vulture, even if the bird in question was clearly bonded to the wild dog. And hunter? It was a normal rank as things went. Most of the pride members were either hunters or healers. He wondered why he should be surprised.
"Does he help you hunt?" the lion asked, looking back to the wild dog before him. At least they both seemed fairly open and friendly!
