Some free alternatives to Photoshop:
GIMP
Pixia
Older, free version of Open Canvas

Found these in the Technical Art Resources thread in Art Discussion. I haven't actually tried out any of these, so I can't promise how good they are sweatdrop I hear that OC does have a networking ability, so you can draw with people across the internet, which could be fun xd

Worth 1000 has great tutorials from pros, as well as constant contests. I think some are worth money.... I go there for the tutorials and galleries of past winners, though. Some of the stuff is amazing.

Academic Superstore has HUGE discounts on technological stuff- programs and hardware.

Example:

I got Adobe Creative Suite Premium for $379. Suggested retail price is listed as $1229.00... is that a deal or what?
That's Photoshop CS, Illustrator CS, InDesign CS, GoLive CS, and Acrobat Professional.

That is so cool! Its a fantastic idea - I think I'll start doing that on ally my pictures, not that anyone would want to steal them xp But hey, just in case.

"Taking Your Talent to the Web" by Jeffrey Zeldman. The best explaination I've seen on design as applied specifically to the web site medium. Also, pack full of resources, on-line and off.

"How to Start a H ome-Based Web Design Business" by Jim Smith. Thorough and easy to understand
