Vera hadn't been in back in town for very long; she'd left for France almost the day after graduating from Meadowview, and had spent most of the summer with her mother. There had been a much brighter two weeks spent in the company of her father, who had temporarily set up shop in England. She nursed a few suspicions about that, as he tended to stay on the other side of the world from his ex-wife. Vera was used to that, however, and it was with a certain amount of relief that she'd gone back to Destiny City. Her parents made her feel unsettled and off balance, which was probably why the second person she'd called upon her arrival had been Paul. She had, of course, immediately called Janice, but Janice also made her feel unsettled and off-balance. Paul was a nice counterpoint to all of that confusion.

They'd met for coffee (in Vera's case, tea) at a cafe nearby, and then met again that night to talk about their Negaverse duties. They'd come up with a plan that winter to potentially trap a senshi, though nothing had come of it then. It had been tried a few times, when the weather had gotten warmer, and the only thing it had netted was conversation and energy gathered from normal people investigating what was going on.

All of which served to explain why Vera was now loitering in an alley on this cloudy, nearly moonless, night with Spinel pretending to menace her. "I hope it works this time," she whispered to him, trying to look properly terrified, instead of frustrated or bored.

Paul's summer had been full of courses, courses, courses and then of course Grayson's mood. What the cause of this mood, he wasn't sure, but he didn't really anticipate getting to find out. Grayson was being uncharacteristically secretive, which just meant Paul had to deal with his cousin's moods--as much as he'd rather not. It was nice to get back to talking to someone simpler to deal with; he had no idea how to deal with his upbeat cousin's mood shift, but Vera was familiar and comfortable to talk to. They shared similar interests, and she was just… much more of a relief to spend time with.

"Ought to," Spinel said, using his impressive height to loom over Vivianite. (It wasn't hard; but then, it wasn't hard to loom over most of the Negaverse anymore. Most of them didn't top five foot two.) "I can sense one coming this way." He considered asking if they should abort it. The energy signature was a great deal larger than he'd been expecting, certainly not the Super signature that he thought he and Vivianite could overcome together.

Spinel stepped closer. "Might not be a bad idea to escalate this a little," he said. "Really grab some attention. Try to run past me."

Vera looked up at Spinel thoughtfully as he spoke. She was tall enough where all the motion involved was a slight upward tilt of her head, and not the same neck craning that so many other officers seemed to require. "Maybe I'm not the only one who didn't like the cold," she offered as an amused suggestion as to why they hadn't lured any senshi previously. His next statement snapped her mouth shut with a barely audible click, eyes narrowing. Since she was a civilian, there was no way for her to sense any power signatures, though it wasn't any great hardship to rely on Spinel.

There was no warning, other than an amused little glint in Vera's deep purple eyes, for what came next. She screamed suddenly, and darted away from her friend, trying to make it look like she was attempting escape. Even though that wasn't what she wanted, or what the plan actually called for (she was supposed to be easy to catch after running off), she had to try and make it look like a genuine attempt.

Which was harder than it looked, and she stumbled a bit while she ran. Hopefully it wasn't straight into the waiting arms of some self-righteous senshi!

He shrugged a bit. He didn't mind the cold, he really didn't. Cold was something he could handle easily, what with his long-sleeved uniform and the fact that he'd grown up mostly in Canada. Cold and Spinel were practically bedmates at this point. He wouldn't know what to do in the summery heat. Never had, probably never would. "Maybe," he said, considering it. "But probably not. Evil never sleeps, Vera." They'd just been unlucky, obviously.

Tonight, though, they'd ended up in a well-traveled area; Spinel had settled in to do surveillance as Paul for a few nights now, and the number of senshi he'd seen probably wasn't equivalent to the number that actually patrolled through this area. A civilian couldn't see rooftops from a small cafe window, after all.

At her scream, he winced. Ear-splitting. He'd go and investigate that if he didn't already know what it was, and know that Vera was in no real danger. Spinel would never hurt her. He did give chase, just until the mouth of the alleyway; he conveniently snagged her around the waist and dragged her back in. "Saw one," he said. He had seen the white bodice of a senshi and some kind of tattered skirt… Maybe it would already be all tired out.

Nemesis knew of only one way to deal with her problems, and that was to drown them out in a bloody battlefield. To give her some credit, there was a lot of s**t going down that she was woefully aware of. If she wasn't careful, it would drag her down. When she felt the weight on her shoulders growing to unbearable measures, that is when she went out to kick some Negaverse a**, the good ol' fashioned way. With her fists. Her new policy of mercy did not extend so far that she wouldn't beat the hell out of anyone who stood in her way. They were lucky that she wasn't intent on killing people anymore. She had done enough of that for her lifetime.

Some would call it weakness, but Nemesis considered it a strength to know when was the time to stop.

She had sensed the power signature of a corrupt senshi, and for a second held on to the hope that it was Alkaid. It wasn't as strong, though, and in reality if Nemesis saw Alkaid again she wasn't sure how it would go. Before she had let hesitation consume her when it came to Alkaid. For anyone else, she did not feel the same way. She had nothing to hold her back. Hearing a scream in the distance only quickened her urge to close the distance between herself and her enemy and proactively rot their flesh.

The thought could have brought a smile to her face if she was not so intent on 'saving the day'. "Let her go, or in the Name of Nemesis, I will break you apart, bit by bit!" She had seen the flash of obnoxious pink hair, and the dark figure of her enemy, and Nemesis was already charging up an attack that could be devastating.

She needed time, though, a frustrating amount of time for her attack to gain the energy it needed. Her fingertips sparked with blue light, the first warning sign that she was already on the assault.

She'd recovered her footing easily enough and didn't offer any real resistance when Spinel caught her around the waist. Indeed, the only reason she stiffened at the contact was because it had been unexpected. After a moment, Vera found herself oddly wishing they hadn't lured a senshi in. Having his arm around her felt...nice. "Darn," she muttered quietly to his comment about having spotted the approaching enemy. "Be ready to let go," she continued more seriously, repeating something they'd gone over countless times already.

When Nemesis appeared, fingertips preemptively sending off sparks of bright blue light, Vera's eyes widened. They hadn't gotten some over confident newbie, they'd gotten someone who clearly meant business - and knew how to fight. She shifted nervously from foot to foot, hopefully not stepping on Spinel's belled ones. She bit her lip nervously and resisted the impulse to look at her friend's face to see if he was as worried as she was.

There was no helping it, though. Oh sure, they could teleport out (made easier at the moment), but that would constitute a failure. And the Negaverse did not long tolerate failure. Biting her lip again, Vera made the decision to go ahead with the rest of the plan. Maybe, maybe this would still work.

While she really would rather have stayed where she was, the teen made a break for it, ready to run away.

At least, run far enough away where transforming into Vivianite wouldn't cause any comment. Run away, and come right back. To a hopefully uninjured Spinel.

He didn't really want to let Vera go as the enormous well of energy approached; but as soon as the senshi finished talking, he nodded and let Vera go. "As you command," he said, holding up both hands in the air. Too easy? Maybe, but the high rank of the senshi they were facing was more than a little bit too strong for them. Spinel worried, he couldn't really do anything else. But Vivianite would be back, and between them they'd be able to make a good attempt. Too, they had one teleportation attempt left. It would be alright.

"I know you," he said after a moment, the smile falling from his face. She had taunted him, almost… decayed something. As a matter of caution, he took hold of a bell, but didn't free it just yet. He hadn't quite caught what her powers did--a seeping paralysis?-- "Nemesis. It's good to see you again."

Stall for time. He could do that, right? And if all else failed, he could set up a barrier she couldn't breach.

Ah, she recognized this corrupted senshi. She couldn't lie and say that she didn't want to beat him to a bloody pulp, but her better half tried to step in to persuade her from not doing that. The girl had run off, but Nemesis didn't quite care about the civilian. As long as she was safe, Nemesis had done her job. It was Spinel that she needed to focus on. With a smirk, she took a step forward. "I can't say that I remember your name, but it is a pleasure to be able to meet up like this." She knew she had the upper hand. She was stronger, more experienced, and fearless.

Nemesis could and would beat him... if he decided to fight her.

"If you walk away now, I will let you live. If I see you again, you will die. If you fight me now, you will get hurt. I won't kill you now, but I will bring you closer to death than you are comfortable with." The Eternal Senshi of Decay absolutely radiated with an unfailing confidence. It was the perks of being an Eternal. She was strong, and she reveled in this knowledge. "Just ask that Tanzanite b***h. She knows what I can do. I gave her a more proper introduction to her own intestines.

She was very thankful." She was probably still pissed off about that. Tanzanite, now, was not someone Nemesis wanted to meet up with until she was absolutely confident that she could rot the life out of her. "So, make your choice. Run or fight. Run away forever or come back. There is really only one way to preserve your life."

She ran down alleyways and a few streets, trying to find a secluded space far enough away so as not to rouse any suspicion. Finally finding one, she stopped and leaned against a wall to catch her breath. She was shaking a little and held her arms against herself in an attempt to stop. An Eternal senshi...Vera bit her lip. She wasn't entirely sure that even a two on one fight would end with a victory for the Negaverse. But that was who had taken the bait.

For a moment, she considered running further. Considered not returning to Spinel's side.

But a moment's thought was all it was, and as she cursed herself for a coward, Vera straightened up. Vivianite was the one who ran back to where she had left the others, slowing her pace and let the measured click of her heels echo down the original alley once she was close enough.

"And what do you offer me?" she asked, voice light and slightly mocking as she folded her arms over her stomach.
