The sand was soft and warm and squishy under his paws. Vigil kneaded the ground for a few moments, trying to enjoy the texture. But it was getting a little old. Boring even. He wanted to do something else. Maybe play with some of the other pups? Oh, but sometimes he made them upset and then that would make mother upset. Maybe he should think of something else to do first. Oh, he had an idea! Perhaps he would go and explore the rocks and find little pools of water. Maybe he could play in those.

By himself. It was more fun to go alone, no one would whine at him if he did that. Besides, it was hardly like he was going to go swimming by himself. Mother worried when they went into the water alone, and he very much disliked worrying her. But it was so boring here right now. He had to go find something fun. Maybe he could find a crawling thing in one of the rock pools! He could play with that and it would not whine and cry and make him be in trouble or mother upset.

Thrilled with his plan, Vigil took off at once with small puppy bounds across the sand to scramble over the rocks. His tail wagged furiously as he sliped and slid across the damper, slicker stones, eagerly looking for a small puddle of water. Swimming was fun but not allowed without mommy or someone else to look after them. So was going far away, but he was not going so far. He would be in sight, he was sure it would be okay to explore on the rocks so long as mommy could see him.
