Hinote looked around furtively from her hiding space behind the gym. She was still unused to the amount of freedom she had living on campus, compared to what she had when she lived at home. She had no idea why some of the others complained about how restricted they were.
Hinote had gotten her hands on a bag of giant campfire marshmallows, the ones the size of her fist. She had been roasting them surreptitiously with snaps of her fingers, making sure no one saw and hoping she wouldn't get in trouble if they did. She stopped for a moment to pull up her knee socks, and was rather shocked when she raised her head and there was a boy in front of her.

The boy had a huge grin on his face and wordlessly held up his own bag of marshmallows. "Great minds." He took a moment to ogle the huge marshmallows in her bag. "Though I kinda want one of those big uns. What do you say? Two normal sizes for one giant? I'll even roast 'em for you."
His hopeful face would be a lot more effective if he didn't have one eye blacked out with what looked like a deep black void. But his perky and energetic personality made that shadow eye seem less apparent.

"Why didn't you just take a bag of the big marshmallows from the storeroom if you wanted the big ones?" Hinote asked. "And there are probably at least three of your marshmallows to one of my marshmallows."
Hinote was rather pleased that someone was coming to talk to her. She didn't have a roommate yet and she didn't know anyone at school so she had been pretty lonely.
"But I can roast them myself," she said, snapping her fingers and holding the treat over the flame. "My name is Hinote, by the way. I just moved in."

"Hullo there Hinote, I'm Ekaksha, but call me Sha. My full name's silly. And the last time I ran a marshmallow raid there were only the normal kind. And yeah since I don't hafta roast yours for ya, then I guess it is worth three." He held open his bag for her to take any three she wanted.
"I'm pretty new here too. And I don't have a room mate either. We should just room together." He said with a childish beam. "Who cares what the adults think. I know we'll be grand friends."

Hinote handed Sha the giant marshmallow and selected three for herself.
"I don't think the elders would allow that," Hinote said uncertainly. "I mean, all of the other kids have same sex roommates. And my mom definitely wouldn't like it. She already doesn't like me living in the dorms. But we can be friends even if we aren't roommates. I bet there are a lot of kids around here who never even thought to go poking in the storerooms."

Sha made a face at her mention of her parents. "Probly not. Adults are silly. So's the whole room thing." Sha didn't mention anything about his parents. They were douches anyway. "Marshmallows are my favorite thing ever. And hey if the other kids are too dumb ta raid the stores then more for us."

"Well, do you want to go raid some more of the giant marshmallows now? I've been keeping a crate of everything I take from the store room in my room. There are a bunch of old milk crates just stacked in there that make carrying things really easy. I really don't know why no one goes in there, the door's hardly ever locked, anyway."
Hinote was pretty pleased, for her part, that someone so outgoing had come up to talk to her within her marshmallow filled bubble. She had been getting awfully lonely, even as she was glad to be out of her mom's house.
"And I guess since I don't have a roommate, right now, you can come hang out in my room. I mean, as long as you're not actually sleeping there we shouldn't be in trouble, right?"

"You don't have to ask me twice." Sha said with a grin, any chance to gain more marshmallows was instantly taken. "It is really easy to get into the supplies." Usually he only went in there for marshmallows anyway so he rarely needed the crates but she had a point about how handy they could be.
"Meh, if we get in trouble, screw 'em. It's not like we were legit doin' anything bad, they're just on power trips. So yeah I'd like to hang out in your room. You're the first person that's really talked to me so far."

Hinote twisted her bag of marshmallows shut, and stopped to pull up her knee socks again before pushing herself off of the bench. "Really? Me too! I thought it was because I just moved on campus and everyone else already had their friends. I mean, my mom's been homeschooling me up till now, and I didn't really know anyone and I thought everyone just had all of their friends and they didn't want to talk to the new girl, especially one that dresses like this."
Hinote looked down at her sailor suit. Most of her clothes were variations on the same basic theme. Her mom thought they were cute. She despised the knee socks.
"Let's go get those marshmallows though, and then we can hide them!"

Sha eyed her outfit. "What's wrong with the way you dress? I think it's cute." Sha did like knee socks. "I've not been here very long either. I wasn't home schooled, so I was in a human school for a while. But yeah! Let's hide a stash of marshmallows, the most amazing substance known to anyone! I personally must never be without." He was awful chipper, it was very nice to have a friend and even better to have one who appreciated marshmallows not to mention wore knee socks.

Hinote could feel her spirits lift as she and Sha headed into the building that housed the dining hall, kitchens, and the store room. It was good to have a friend.
"Marshmallows are so good. Especially toasted."
Sha was apparently outgoing and confident, the things Hinote was not, and easy to talk to. That made Hinote want to stick by him. He seemed nice, and if she had one good friend, others would follow. Even if this one thought knee socks were cute.
"I mean, I guess there's nothing wrong with knee socks, by themselves. It's mainly that mom buys all my clothes and she picks them out and, well, they're all this kind of thing. Little sailor dresses and knee socks. I just think it would be nice to have a pair of jeans or a sundress or sometihng else to wear sometimes. Do you get to pick your own clothes out?"

"Everything's better toasted." Naturally being of a fire element Sha thought heat and flame made everything better.
He didn't get to pick out all of his clothes when he still had parents. They'd taken him along to let him let them know what he liked. But just because he liked it didn't mean they'd get it for him. Now that he was a ward of the school he didn't know what would happen when he needed new clothes. He hoped he'd be able to choose. "I helped pick my clothes out before I came here. But now that I'm here I'm not so sure about getting to pick them out anymore. I hope I will."

Hinote looked around as the two approached the food storage room. The coast was clear, it looked like.
"Well, maybe there is a clothing storage room. I mean, they keep all this food here and it would probably take years to get through. So they probably have other stuff, as well, I just don't know where those store rooms are."
She tried the door. "It's unlocked again."

"There's an idea." Sha grinned happily again. "You're brilliant Hinote, it'll have to be an adventure!" He reached around her to pull the door open and held it in place so she could precede him into the storage room.
"Don't forget to flick the lights on! Wouldn't want to be trapped in the dark." He took off one of his shoes and used it as a door wedge so that the door wouldn't shut on them and some well meaning staff member lock them in.
