Daniel didn't even remember when he'd given Ume his birthday but... Surely he had, since she'd called and pretty much deemed that they were going out for diner, at least.
Well, he wasn't going to complain.
He'd taken much longer to get ready than he usually did, but eventually he was out, walking toward the address of the restaurant she'd given him. He actually had no idea what it was, never having been there before... A surprise.
He was wearing the coat he'd brought with him, all matching up and looking rather... fancy, through he couldn't help but be just the slightest embarrassed when people looked at him and followed him with their gaze.
He wasn't used to standing out.

She was, she was very used to standing out. She stood out all the more wearing the dress that he had bought her despite protestations. It fit snug around her waist making it waspish, her hair done half up half down with braids a twist and the customary hair pins, particularly the rose one he had bought her as well.
"You look amazing!" She said by way of greeting, reaching out both hands for his own. "Are you ready?" She asked her eyes glittering with the delight of small surprises.

Was Daniel still proud of himself for that one ?
Well, yes. Yes it was. Seeing her wearing it was all the more rewarding, really.
"So do you." He said with a grin, taking one of her hands. "I am~"
He still wasn't sure what this place was, or where they were going, per-se.

She chose a small italian place, she'd made reservations as it was slightly on the formal side, and she'd done so in person and in some of her most gothic wear just to be sure they wouldn't object to what she and her date would be wearing at the time as well.
Waiting there for him was, per her request a small box at their table and a single rose, light purple much like his hair. But these were secrets not yet to be revealed.
She lead the way till she caught sight of the awning with its spidery lettering, the whaft of olives and garlic making its way out into the street mingling with the smell of wood fire and fresh bread. "Just there..." She said pointing towards it, the outside tables still lining the little patio, now lit by candles but their seats for tonight were inside with live music and dimmed lights.

Daniel happily let her lead the way, through his curiosity was starting to show - he was peering around he walked, looking back and forth like a cat trying to follow a laser pointer. Was it this one ?
This one ?
Or...
Ah, this one then ? Daniel hadn't ever come here, but it smelled so good already. And well, Ume was here with him, so he almost didn't care where they were going at all, as long as he was with her.
"You have a reservation, right ?" He could see the line from here and... boy that was a nasty line !

She nodded looking pleased. "Inside table, reserved it the -very- day I found out your birthday, and that you liked italian." She smiled at him. "Ready to irritate everyone who -didn't- make a reservation?" She grinned at him, a slight wicked twinkle in her eye.

Daniel wasn't usually one that found pleasure in the miisfortune of others but... He couldn't help but grin.
"Of course, my lady."
Hell, they just had to reserve their table, just like everyone else, yes ?
And so they went, bypassed the line completely, and were led to their tables and handed the menu.
"Hm... What were you thinking on getting ?" It would probably be pasta for him, through... bruchetta would be amazing too...

"I was pondering some of their mezze pene, they have some amazing sauces here I'm told." She gave him a warm smile. "If you'd like to split something though I'm not going to argue either" She smiled. "I think we'll have to take some of this home..."
She folded her hands on her lap as they brought out 'the box' and set it wordlessly in front of him.

"That sounds good too..." He really didn't mind splitting - especially if she was going to insist on paying. He couldn't really stop her, not tonight, but he was the one practically made of money.
He could at least... Well, lessen the damage.
Through all that went to the back of his mind when... Suddenly there was a box.
Uh ? Oh good lord what had she...
He didn't say a thing. He didn't need to. His eyes did all the talking, much like a young child on his birthday, ironically.
What'sintheboxwhat'sinthebox
It was all to easy to use his own curiosity to mess with him, really.

She arched her eyebrows, eyes bright and said nothing, just waited with a small smile curving the cupid bow of her red painted lips. She even went so far as to bat her eyes innocently at him as she waited for him to open it.

Ohh, tempteress.
She figured that was an hint that he was good to open it now - if not, well... Too bad !
Carefully, he opened it - one might have expected to pretty much rip the thing apart, but no - and took a peek at what was hiding inside.

Inside was 'a writers handbook and guide to 'gore'', it proclaimed this in deep red letters that 'dripped' down the cover, underneath sighting that it used true to life sources to provide writers with authentic facts about everything from wounds to crime screens. It wouldn't give anyone a job as a CSI, but even flipping to the first few pages and finding the first of the carefully drawn illustrations and details on 'asphyxiation' .
She looked enormously pleased with herself as she'd had to special order it. "They had one strictly on poisons too!" She blushed. "And I'm not saying you write it badly at -all- I very VERY much like the one you're letting me read, I just thought you might find a lot of interesting things in it." She said going from pleased as punch to 'pleased-but-nervously-chatty' in under a minute.

Too bad for the happy couple, the rules were about to change...
She normally did not do 'grunt' work as some would call it... but she was still learning her place. Learning what her role was. She was a protector, sure... but to protect was just one thing. Lyra was certain she could do much, much more. She felt like she wasn't doing enough anyways. So she was using a skill she was not used to, one that she needed to be taught and was not....instinctual. She needed to go out of her way to do this, and apparently it took her much more concentration that usual to pull it off. Almost as if some little glimmer inside was holding her back.
Still, She was a eternal rank... so she could pull from those around her as she walked past. No need to touch. She could not pull the same numbers as a general.. but she could try.
Still, she found herself walking past a fancy looking resteraunt. People outside wearing their fancy dresses, tux's, even a coat tail here or there. Lyra was not too good at this energy thing, so she was not very subtle. As her heels clinked past the people, palm extended with something inside it... people were dropping behind her. Yeah, not very subtle in deed. Mostly when the screaming started.

Golden eyes went wide at the sight of the book. It might have sent many running for the hills, but hoho... Certainly not him ! He couldn't help but flip some of the pages right there and then, taking note of what was inside.
Oh, damn.
"That is amazing." Of course, he'd been told such books existed, but he'd never been able to find one. "That is..."
And then there was screaming. And Daniel nearly bolted to the ceiling. "W-What was that ?!"
Oh, s**t.

"Oh no..." She murmured. "Why today... " She reached across the table to put a hand on his arm. "Forgive me? I have to see... I have to try and help...I'll be back I promise..."
She squeezed his hand but without waiting for permission she'd already started to rise.
