While living in the cave with Illidan and Coridan, Doan Vien had time to think. She had gone no further than the mouth of the cave since the day before, but now she was out in the open, sucking in the morning air. Since meeting the stallion and his son, she had begun to muse on things that had passed many years ago. There had been a lot of horses in her life, some good friends and others only acquaintances, but she had never stayed with anyone very long. Part of it had been her guilt. How could she think to be happy with anyone when she had let her daughter be taken from her back home? She had no idea if her daughter was happy.
And now... now she was unsure. It had been a long time since she had felt this kind of happiness. It had been a long time since she had wanted to stay put for good the way she did when she looked back at the mouth of the cave and remembered the sight of Illidan standing at the entrance. The feeling was strong and it made her confused.
Fluttering her wings, she took to the sky slowly, as she always had to. An idea had been brewing since she woke up not too long ago. There was a small herd not too far from here, if she was thinking right, that she had lived with for over five years some time ago. One mare in particular had been the best friend Doan had ever come to know and their parting had been very difficult. It was only the guilt, the unending guilt, which sent her on her way.
Well now, with the warm feeling that had been growing in her stomach recently, she had come to terms with the thought that having friends was not bad. Having friends and being happy was not some sort of betrayal of her daughter. She would go and visit this mare, Anais, and rekindle the lovely friendship they had. It had been far too many years.
Doan smiled.

After only a short time flying, the mare was forced to land and walk the rest of the way. Her wings were simply not meant to carry one great distances. They were too delicate and could not catch enough air without beating at constantly wild speeds.
It took more hours than she expected, but by late afternoon she began to recognize the area. At the outskirts of the territory, she came across a group of young guards talking amongst themselves. She couldn't help but chuckle, they seemed to be chatting more than doing their jobs.
"Hello?" she called out, revealing herself. They quickly seemed to perk up, fumbling over their hooves for a moment before they moved to block her path. Good, well at least they were sort of on their toes. She smiled unthreateningly. Hopefully that would be enough to get them to hear her out properly.
"I used to live in this herd, it was probably before your time." Another laugh left her, these boys looked so young. They seemed to be considering her words, though, and one of them nodded for her to continue. "I was just thinking about a mare who had been such a good friend to me while I was here. Anais? Do you know of her?"
The youngest looking guard seemed to brighten immediately, unable to keep the words from spilling out of his mouth. "That's my gramma!" he exclaimed, but soon after his expression fell and he glanced away. It seemed like he couldn’t continue and Doan was unsure why. The oldest looking guard spoke up next.
"Miss Anais died a year ago," he said, also glancing away.
Doan missed anything said after 'died.' So, her friend was dead? She was too late? What if... what if then her daughter was dead, too? It was a foolish train of thought, but her mind began to trip over it. What if everyone she ever cared about was dead?
"Um, thank you..." she managed to force out to the kids before turning to leave. She could hear them behind her, asking her if she was okay and if she needed a place to stay, but she could only shake her head and keep walking. Her friend's death hit her harder than she ever imagined it could, not that she had ever much thought about others dying. Now that she was thinking about it, it was a very heavy feeling.
She glanced up at the sky, ever darkening. Her thoughts drifted to Illidan. What... what would happen if he...? She couldn't even finish the thought. Even after being away from Anais for so many years, the truth of her death had hurt. Doan couldn't even imagine what it would feel like if the stallion she had come to-
Her thoughts stopped momentarily. It was something she couldn't really deny. She had come to love him. And if he died, she wasn't sure she could take it. The idea of death was so ingrained in her thoughts at this moment that she was having a hard time remembering that Anais had always been of weak constitution and had likely passed because of it.
Glancing up, she realized she had walked quite a distance without realizing. Night had fallen completely over the land, making it difficult to see. She would have to stop for now, otherwise she would only get lost. Tucking her wings, she settled against a nearby tree.

It was early, early morning when Doan's eyes shot open and her breath hitched in her throat. Her mind had been plagued with nightmares since she fell asleep. With hardly any good rest, she still felt exhausted and the emotional pain of yesterday had not diminished at all.
Stretching out her back, she glanced around to get her bearings before continuing to walk. She would go back to the cave where she could rest peacefully. Yes, she was sure she would be able to get a good night's sleep there. That is, until her mind began to wander on death again. It wouldn't leave her alone. Sighing, the mare stopped and ducked her head.
No, she couldn’t go back. Just like she was coming to the conclusion that she couldn't have her daughter, just like she couldn't have her deceased friend, she was beginning to think she could no longer have the new group she had come think of as, despite herself, a family. She could no longer have Illidan and Coridan. She had to leave.
But... she couldn't just leave without a word, could she? Despite her age and wisdom, Doan found her life so far had been full of so much confusion. She continued to walk back towards where she knew the cave to be. No, she couldn't just leave without saying goodbye. That would be even harder than leaving.
