The dark, aggressive mare stood hip-shot in the sun; a beam of light breaking through the trees in her small clearing by her house. Something had been bugging her, but she couldn't pin it down. The feeling that something was out of place had steadily growing strong as the past few weeks had gone by. Now Voreti was determinedly standing in the sunlight where she felt she did her best thinking.

The forest was in excellent health. She had been sure to see to that. No that wasn't the issue. There had been no signs on intruders for nearly a month. Even better; Voreti hated upshot azrein. Her long tail swished idly. Why couldn't she pin it down under her hoof?!

Prancing through the forest, Taoshira was careful to make sure nothing snagged the sack she was carrying in her mouth. She had left early this morning to bring home a treat for Voreti in hopes of surprising her. It seemed like just yesterday, she was meeting her for the first time. But now she was all grown up, and Tashi wondered how such a solitary mare like Voreti had even thought about taking her in and raising her. She made it to the clearing and noticed her adoptive mother standing in the sunlight like she often did. Even though she didn't know if Voreti would see her or not, she tossed her head in greeting. Tashi slowed her pace as she got near the other mare and laid down the bag, letting a few delicious apples roll out. "I went out and got some apples for us this morning Voreti." She said as she backed away from the bag, letting the mare know she had first pick. She was pretty much her mother.

(I feel bad for Tashi. Voreti is gonna seem like such a b***h. DX)

Voreti, though she was lost in thought, twitched her ears as she heard hoof beats coming down the path. That would be the foal. Now that she thought about it, Tashi hadn't been around when she got up. She turned to ask what she had been doing when Voreti looked at the mare and saw not the haplass foal she'd taken in, but a full grown adult mare. Her ears laid back and she frowned as the feeling that had been bothering her crystalized.

It took a moment before she realized what Tashi had said and looked down at the apples. The black mare reined in her impuse to chase the intrude out instantly. This mare had once been the filly she'd unwittingly adopted. Tail twitching, she slowly walked up and picked up an apple. She nodded as she chewed; chew drippled down her chin.

"You have done well since coming here. It's time you left." Plain and blunt. Voreti wasn't going to dance around the subject. The memories of the past years and the apples had forstalled outright aggression. She didn't look at Tashi and picked up another apple.

(Awe, lol. Poor Tashi. I can't decide if I want to make her leave willingly or not go without a fight....ha)

Taken aback, she took a few steps back. In the back of her mind, Tashi knew this had been coming. Back when Voreti had adopted her, she had been just a helpless little girl. She couldn't help but feel hurt, this was the only motherly figure she had ever had, and had grown to love. Voreti's tail swishing let her know that she wasn't kidding, even the slight moment that her ears had laid back hadn't escaped her attention.

"Back then, I could have guessed this was coming. But now? You raised me Voreti. If there was anyone other than you that would protect this forest it would be me. How many times have I helped chase intruders out of here? You might have taken me in, but I did my part around here to help you out." Tashi's tail flicked nervously, her voice practically whining. She didn't want to leave this place, it was her home. Where would she go?

Voreti knew she'd shocked the young mare. That wouldn't be her last shock Voreti was sure. She watched Tashi. The mare felt torn. She had never intended to keep the filly. In fact she'd done everything to find her a good set of parents. Nothing had worked, and it had almost seemed natural for Tashi to remain with her.

"Yes now." The dark mare bowed her head slightly. Internally she was torn. Something within her said to let the foal-no longer foal- remain; while another louder voice urged her to take back the forest as her own. "I did Tashi. Though it wasn't ideal for either of us, I like to believe I've done a fair job." Bringing up her help protecting the forest really hit a nerve. Voreti looked away for awhile as her tail twitched.

"Tashi, you have learned a lot from me and made me very proud. Your time here has taught me aswell." She gave a quick nod, acknowledging Tashi's assistance these past years. How many times had she laughed watching the filly chase out larger azrein? "You are young yet and need to spread your wings. This place is not for you, but at least now you have a fighting chance in surviving the world."

Tashi normally wasn't one to get angered easily, but this conversation seemed to be taking that route.

"This-this place is not for me? Surviving the world? How am I supposed to do that if I haven't even seen the world? Ha! So you think throwing me to the wolves is me surviving?"
Tashi's talk flicked harder now. She really didn't want to leave, she loved Voreti like the mother she should have been born to.

Tashi took a deep breath and settled her tail, "I don't want to leave Voreti. I love this place, I love you, and as much as you probably don't want to admit, you love me too. If you want me to see the world, sure, I'll venture out some times. But I don't want to leave this forest. I don't want to leave the only home I've ever known."

"You are better prepared than when I found you. Young, fit, and strong; more importantly you know more than you did." Voreti tossed her head, "exactly. You haven't seen it Tashi. You're lucky since my territory resides with the king's between ours and the Six." The dark mare was doing her best to ease the transition, but it didn't seem to be going well.

"I thank you for your love. Yes Tashi, I do love you. But. You must leave. I wont tolerate any adults in my forest." She lifted a hoof and pointed at Tashi, her voice hardening. "You are an adult. It's time you left and made your own way in life. You will find or make another home for yourself." Voreti laid her ears back to show she was now serious. Tashi would either leave willingly or be driven out.

"I hope you regret this decision for the rest of your life." Tashi spat. With a broken heart she turned away from the only mother she had ever known. After some distance had been covered, but Voreti was still in ear shot, "You say I'm lucky where your territory lies? Maybe I'm not. Maybe you're one of the six. You don't want any other 'adult' in the forest because you're selfish. Even and adult that you had raised and taught your ways you won't let stay. You're going to have a sad, lonely, miserable life. I'll be back one day, just you watch, and you'll regret this decision." She said with a tone of finality as she turned around again and ran towards the exit of the forest.

Tears streamed down her face, all the training she had of moving through the forest quietly went down the toilet. Tashi's eyes were clouded with tears but she found her way to the exit without fault. She paused for a minute, still crying, before stepping out of the forest and onto the plain she hadn't seen since she was a filly. "She'll regret it..." she assured herself in an attempt to stop her crying.

Voreti knew she couldn't explain her reasoning to the mare. She didn't even try. Her face remained impassive as the only azrein she'd gotten close to since leaving her herd dropped her wish. Perhaps she would regret this, but it still had to be done. No matter the pain to their hearts.

She swished her tail and sighed. Her eyes watched the mare turn and leave. It was several long minutes before she could follow. Discretely Voreti followed the path, tracking the progress of Tashi through the forest. Well within the depths of the forest's shadows she stopped. Voreti gave a big sigh. There she went, their alignment was over, and her forest was once again all her own.

Haven seen the intruder off her territory, the black mare turned back to the depths.
