Together, Beryl and Sio moved across the grasslands. Sio walked at a steady lumbering pace. Beryl didn't walk at all. Currently she was shrunk down to her smallest size and riding on Sio's back. In this form she wasn't a burden to the large buffalo. She personally thought that Sio would probably be able to carry her even at her normal size but she had yet to test it. Sio was pretty stoic and placid, until you got her angry. It wasn't worth the risk to test her little theory.
The sun seared down on them and made Beryl wish she could put a parasol on Sio's back too. On days like this it was downright unpleasant to be such a dark color. "Maybe we should find somewhere with a little more tree cover!" she griped at Sio. Sio said nothing and Beryl huffed and fanned herself with her wings. She couldn't wait for autumn.

Sayoko had been grazing on the grass but when she began to get hot from the sun, she moved to the shade. It wasn't such a bad day outside, there was a light breeze that would blow through occasionally and it wasn't completely cloudy but it wasn't too sunny either. It seemed like the day was just perfect for her to relax and enjoy time to herself. Her color seemed to attract what little sun there was when she was out in the open so she could only stand so much at a time.
The mare closed her eyes and began to relax as the scents of the nature around her filled her senses. In her heart she loved being outside and being one with nature but it was her little secret. If her sister ever discovered how she felt about being under the trees or around water she would probably tell everyone or so she assumed. She laid down in the cool grass under the shade tree, her sleek black tail moved every now and then to keep the bugs away from her. Yoko was in the perfect place to watch her surroundings and if someone came into the field, she would see them right away.

Even though Sio was silent, she still changed her pace to head to the edge of a forest not too far off. Beryl sighed with relief. Once they had arrived she might even be able to find some late summer flowers to drink from. A sip of nectar would be exactly what she needed to get a little energy. Sio plodded onward but Beryl couldn't hold her small form forever. She was starting to feel the strain of it and put all of her focus into staying small. She just needed to piggyback a little further and they'd be in the shade! Just... a little further!
Unfortunately, Beryl couldn't quite make it. She managed to hop off Sio before she transformed and it was just in time. She popped into her normal size and landed on the ground. It wasn't graceful, but it'd serve. "Almost there," she said in a dramatic wheeze. "Have you ever been so hot, Sio?" Sio didn't answer. Beryl simply shook her head and kept walking until she reached the cool shade beneath the trees. "Much better," she sighed with relief.

Sayoko didn't move a single muscle as she watched the duo and their behavior. She was smiling as she observed them, they certainly were an interesting pair. As they walked closer to her she still didn't move an inch. She didn't want to alert them to her location but if they did happen to spot her then she would be friendly of course, she was trying to change her ways after all. Her long black tail swayed a little as she began to get excited at the possibility of making friends from her change in attitude and behavior.

"Now, just to find something to drink," panted Beryl, shaking her mane out. "Let's see..." She sniffed at the air and looked around but didn't see any obvious signs of water. She chose a direction at random and started walking in it... right up until she walked past the other soquili.
Beryl didn't notice the other mare until she was close enough that she could have touched her with her wing if she had wanted. When she did notice, she leaped dramatically away and shouted to her buffalo. "Sio! Intruder! Intruder, intruder!" Beryl never dealt well with being surprised and this time was no exception.
The buffalo looked at the stranger, shrugged, and lowered her head. She threateningly scuffed a hoof backward in the soil, as if preparing to charge.

Sayoko moved to her feet and glared at the other mare. "Have you lost your mind?!" She screamed the words in anger and amazement. "Your in nature, this isn't your land!" She continued to scream and yell but she would glance back at the beast and slowly moved out of its path. Yoko didn't feel like being abused today, besides it would leave her body damaged and that would really make her upset.

"Wrong!" shouted Beryl with a grand sweep of her wing that ended with it pointed at the other mare. "I am a member of the Underground and we claim everywhere as our lands! Therefore.... you are trespassing!" The surprise had worn off but she didn't want to let this mare off easy for being the source of it. She was still grumpy and someone had to pay.
"Pay the toll, or the buffalo will charge!" declared Beryl. Sio knew this speech well and kept up her threatening stance. She slowly turned, keeping her eyes straight on the pink mare.

Sayoko scoffed at the other weird mare and her even stranger companion. "Ok." She decided to only speak one word and then grinned her own little smile. Yoko wasn't in any kind of mood to play games, she glared at the strange mare and then walked away. In her mind, she would make the mare pay for her mistake. Yoko turned back around to face the mare and charged the blue mare herself, if the buffalo would charge her, she would charge the mare. It was simple math in her mind, eliminate the source of command and the stupid thing would go away.

"Oh no you don't!" yelled Beryl as the pink mare began charging her. She had encountered difficult targets before but it wasn't often that they outright attacked her. This one would have to pay a special fee on top of the usual toll.
The fatigue melted off Beryl in a rush of adrenaline. She gave the mare her own answering smirk as she flicked her wings out. Her long and narrow wings might seem flimsier than the flutters with the wide butterfly wings but in reality she found hers much more useful. Like a dragonfly, she buzzed her four wings in the air and they lifted her straight off the ground. She had never met a soquili as maneuverable as herself. She could take off from standing still and dart any direction she pleased once she was in the air. She would never be able to fly as high or as far as the wind soquili, but who needed to when you could flit between trees?
She lifted herself neatly above the reach of the charging mare and then shouted to her buffalo. "Sio! Get her!"

Sayoko laughed at the coward that was floating in the air. "Your just a coward if you send other beings to do your work for you." She frowned at the mare, she really was disappointed in her opponent and even more so in the stupid buffalo. "Hey lug head, you are really going to obey her orders? She sends you to do the dirty work while she relaxes in the air? How fair is that really?" She decided to ask the buffalo what was running through her mind since it seemed that the mare above her was indeed afraid of getting her hands dirty.

Beryl sneered down at the other soquili. It seemed like she was one of the idiot personality types that Beryl truly wasn't fond of. Beryl wondered if she'd be just as mouthy to a skinwalker if she met one. She really seemed like the type. "You think Sio doesn't get compensated for what she does? Sio loves this stuff, don't you, Sio?" She glanced over at her buffalo companion while still hovering flapping midair.
"It's fine by me," grunted Sio in her typical to the point manner. Beryl smiled with pleasure when she saw how Sio firmly kept the other mare in her sights. Sio was prepared for anything!

Sayoko scoffed at the mare and was so tired of her talking that she decided to take matters into her own hands. She charged the buffalo, her head down low, ready to head butt the animal. Her target was the place between it's horns, she was hoping that she wouldn't miss and if she was going to miss, she hoped that she could avoid it. If the mare really wanted to annoy Sayoko, she did a pretty good job about it.

As she flapped in the air, Beryl looked down in astonishment at the mare. She was charging a buffalo? She was trying to head butt a buffalo? That was a reaction she had never seen before and never expected to see. Head butting was what animals like goats and buffaloes did best. They were built for it. She had even seen deer clashing antlers and skulls before... but not soquili.
"Hey, you're just going to hurt yourself if you do that!" she called down to the mare. She wanted to steal from this soquili, but not give her a concussion.
Sio shrugged and then lowered her head to meet the mare. She braced her hooves into the earth and gave one low snort. It wasn't generally female buffaloes that did the head butting and fighting, but she knew she could take a blow better than a soquili.

Sayoko had not expected the mare to care if she hurt herself but she decided to give her the benefit of the doubt. At the last second, sayoko spread her wings and rose up into the air. However, as she was going up, she did manage to kick the buffalo in the head. She giggled and took off flying in the opposite direction. Sayoko was no longer interested in the pair of them, she was going back home.

Sio grunted deeply when the mare's hoof met her head but it was more out of surprise than pain. With her thick skull she didn't feel much, though she was still angry it had happened. She snorted with frustration at the mare and swiped with her horns but was far too late to catch her.
"Hey, you! Come back here! Come back and pay the toll!" shouted Beryl after her. Beryl darted into the air to follow but stopped when it became obvious she couldn't keep up. Flutters weren't meant to race winds and now it was more obvious than ever. She flapped back down to land beside Sio and hunched up in aggravation. "Darn it! We need a better tactic for flyers," she muttered. "We need... a big net or something." Sio said nothing, leaving Beryl to her cranky thoughts. They may have missed out on their prey that day, but she vowed to have a fruitful catch the next!
