There are some rumors that Zacharias Smith is related to Hepzibah Smith, who is a descendant of Helga Hufflepuff. Therefore, Zacharias is a descendant of Hufflepuff as well. Maybe that's how he got into Hufflepuff, despite his personality. The Sorting Hat sometimes takes family into account.

That is true. I guess it is surprising that Hufflepuff and Slytherin made it through. But, with the information given, it looks like both Hufflepuff and Slytherin lines have ended. Voldemort died without a child and there is no mention of what happened to Zacharias after the war, should he be a descendant of Hufflepuff.

You know, I've read some interesting fanfics to try and make Zacahrias less of a d**k. Read a good Blaise/Zacharias fic once.
