My hope with this thread is to start a discussion on tarot cards; ways to read them, meanings behind the cards, our favorite decks, and so forth. I welcome questions, comments, your experiences, because as no two people are the same, no two people will read the cards the same way. I'll do one card at a time, uploading pictures of different cards so you can see a variety of decks and styles. All I ask is that you respect each other's opinions; just because something is different does not make it wrong.

The Fool is the first card of Tarot, labeled as 0. It is the beginning of the journey of The Fool, who has many paths in front of him to choose from. At this stage he is carefree, with the world at his feet as he is about to embark upon his journey.

When I draw the fool upright I read it as new beginnings. You have a myriad of paths to choose from, you just have to pick a direction and go. I often see youthful optimism in this card, a world to choose from if you are able to make a decision about which way to go.

Reversed I often see blockage, a refusal to see what lies before you. Perhaps you feel as if your choices were stripped away, leaving you with little to no choice. But this card reminds us that there is always a choice; it might not seem like a good choice, or what is preferred, but there is still a choice.

YAY TAROT!!!!!!!!!!

I always liked the aspect of the fool that He or she is willing to walk off the cliff and trust the universe, in one deck, I think it might be the Osho Zen deck, the fool is stepping off a cliff but on to a rainbow.

I love the Deviant moon deck, but I haven't really read with it yet. Have you seen the Tarot of the Sweet Twilight? its a very cool deck.

This is very timely for me, I am giving a tarot workshop at the Pagan Pride Gay event in Cleveland this year.

I haven't seen it, no. *makes a note to check it out online* The Deviant Moon Tarot is my new favorite, I carry that one around in my purse actually. It's the deck I'm most likely to use for myself or friends. I'm glad I was able to time this thread so well too. biggrin I'm actually keeping my original deck in front of the computer so I don't forget to update this regularly. xd

I use the Mona Lisa tarot deck, but reading the cards has never really been my thing, the technique I use is far too long to use, so if I need advice I usually consult my I-Ching (I use coins instead of yarrow sticks).

I've dabbled with the I-Ching, but have yet to get heavily into it.

Today's Tarot Card

1-The Magician

User Image

http://www.aeclectic.net/
Basic Tarot Story

Traveling on his way, the Fool first encounters a Magician. Skillful, self-confident, a powerful magus with the infinite as a halo floating above his head, the Magician mesmerizes the Fool. When asked, the Fool gives over his bundled pack and stick to the Magician. Raising his wand to heaven, pointing his finger to Earth, the Magician calls on all powers. Magically, the cloth of the pack unfolds upon the table, revealing its contents.

To the Fool's eyes, it is as if the Magician has created the future with a word. All the possibilities are laid out, all the directions he can take: The cool, airy Sword of intellect and communication, the fiery Wand of passions and ambition, the overflowing Chalice of love and emotions, the solid Pentacle of work, possessions and body.

With these tools, the Fool can create anything, make anything of his life. But here's the question, did the Magician create the tools, or were they already in the pack? Only the Magician knows - and on this mystery, our eloquent mage refuses to say a word.

Source: aeclectic.net

When I draw The Magician I see potential. The potential for power and self discovery. It shows us the tools we might use to aid us on the journey we are currently on.

Reversed I read it as a refusal to see what is before us, a refusal to acknowledge that which we might learn from.

2-The High Priestess

User Image

http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/learn/meanings/highpriestess.shtml
Continuing his journey, the Fool comes upon a beautiful and mysterious veiled lady enthroned between two pillars and illuminated by the moon. She is the opposite of the Magician, quiet where he was loquacious, still where he was in motion, sitting while he stood, shrouded in the night where he was out in the bright of day. Sensing that she is a great seer, the Fool lays out his sword, chalice, staff and pentacle before her. "The Magician showed me these, but now I'm in a quandary. There are so many things I could do with them. I can't decide."

The High Priestess doesn't speak. Instead she hands him a pair of ancient scrolls. Seating himself at her feet, the Fool puts his decision-making on hold and reads by the light of her crescent moon.

"I did not know any of this," says the Fool. The scrolls, like a secret manual, have given him insight into his new tools. "This information helps me to narrow things down, but I'm still afraid of making a wrong decision."

The words come to him then, not from without but from within: "What do your instincts tell you?" The Fool reflects on that, and that's when he knows what he should do. Decision made, he rises to leave even though he suspects that the High Priestess has more secrets she could reveal to him--like what lies behind the pomegranate curtain. Right now, however, he is focused and ready to be on his way.

Thanking the High Priestess, he heads off. But as he leaves he hears that inner voice, rising like the waters which spring and flow from beneath her throne: "We'll meet again...when you're ready to travel the most secret path of all."

For me The High Priestess is about duality and balance. Many things cannot exist with their counterbalance, though you can have too much of one and not enough of the other. She is the balance, and guides us to accept the good with the bad, to accept both sides of the coin. With this card comes the potential for harmony.

Reversed something is askew. Perhaps balance isn't as easy as you thought it would be to attain. Or refuse to see both sides. Or are under that balance doesn't go away once found. Whatever is going on, there is a lack of harmony, the presence of discord. But this is not a bad thing. If we take her teachings into account, then we know that to find balance is not to find peace, so much as to make it easier to find once you know where to look for it. It is impossible to live in a constant state of balance, just as it is impossible to live in a constant state of bliss. But if we search enough, we will find it, and thus know where to start looking when we need it again.

I must have missed a day, I wish I were savvy with getting pics posted. I would love to post my favorite cards from different decks. Though not sure which is my favorite Magician, one of my favorite Priestess card is Robin Wood's.

I want to post more pictures of different cards, but it's hard to find specific decks aside from ones like the Rider-Waite. Maybe someday I'll get a scanner, I can then scan and upload all the ones I have. *sad face*

3-The Empress
User Image

http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/learn/meanings/empress.shtml
Having decided what he will create with his tools, the Fool strides forward, impatient to make his future a full-grown reality. This is when he comes upon the Empress. Her hair gold as wheat, wearing a crown of stars, and a white gown dotted with pomegranates. She rests back on her throne surrounded by an abundance of grain and a lush garden. It is possible that she is pregnant.*

Kneeling, the Fool relates to her his story. And she, in turn, smiles a motherly smile and gently gives him this advice: "Like newly planted grain or a newborn babe, a new life, a new relationship, a new creation is fragile. It requires patience and nurturing. It needs love and attention. Only this will bring it to fruition." Understanding at last that his creations will take time to develop, the Fool thanks the Empress and continues on his way.

* Pregnant. Well, not in the Rider-Waite deck she isn't. But many other decks go for pregnancy as part of the Empress' iconography.

First and foremost, the Empress represents fertility when I draw this card upright. But there are many things that can benefit from fertility, and not just the body. Just as the body can be fertile, so can the mind and spirit. However, you need much more than just potential for something to flourish. You need seeds to plant and nurture before you have something. This card says that there is potential, it just needs to be realized.

Reversed, there is something blocking the flow of fertility. It could be something physical, or something mental, or something else entirely, but there is something causing stagnation.

4-The Emperor

User Image

http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/learn/meanings/emperor.shtml
Basic Tarot Story

The Fool was given options by the Magician, and decided on one with help from the High Priestess. He learned how to develop it thanks to the Empress. Now it has reached as stage where he must find a way to manage it. How to do this? He approaches a great Emperor seated on a stone throne. The Fool is amazed by the way the Emperor is instantly, eagerly obeyed in every particular, at how well his Empire is run and organized. Respectfully, he asks the Emperor how it is he does this. And the Emperor answers: "Strong will and a solid foundation of laws and order. It's all very well," he explains to the Fool, "to be imaginative, creative, instinctual, patient; but to control one must be alert, brave and aggressive."

Ready now to lead and direct rather than be led, the Fool heads out with new purpose.

When I pull The Emperor, it represents a strong, imposing force in the subjects life. It could be someone with great intentions, or someone who just wants to rule. It can also represent the subjects desire to be more in control. The Emperor is the consort of the Empress, encouraging one to follow through with the seed that has been planted.

When reversed, The Emperor represents a driving force that is more interested in getting what he wants than what is best for all involved. This could easily be a desire of the subject or a force he must deal with in someone else.
