The new semester was approaching, and as usual, the cafeteria was crammed with new students who flocked there for lunch in between unpacking and reuniting with friends they hadn't seen all summer. There was hardly a seat in the entire room, and the noise was practically deafening for a little pup with sensitive ears.
So Jove had decided to instead have his lunch outside, sitting under the shade of a tree near the main building. He didn't have anyone to eat with, many of his friends were not yet back from their own visits, even Ren was unavailable. But it didn't stop the gryphon from packing him one hell of a lunch.
The pup opened his lunch bag and stared. Sandwiches. Lots and lots of sandwiches. And what was worse, there was a little note from his brother sitting right on top with a happy smiley face and the wishes that he have a wonderful day. Who even did that, leave notes in lunchboxes? The gryphon had really lost his mind this time, leaving notes, and packing enough sandwiches to feed three people, five if they were all Jove's size. If he even tried to eat them all, his little belly would swell up like a balloon and give him a terrible stomach ache.
With a frown he unwrapped one of the sandwiches and stared at it.

Like Jove, Amrita was never a fan of big and noisy rooms. It wasn't that the noise was deafening or that her hearing was sensitive (actually, they were all pretty dull thanks to rot), it was just that it overloaded her malfunctioning little brain. Too many things to pay attention to, not enough capacity to process it all. She too had retreated outside, to one of her favourite trees on campus...which was already occupied?! Oh jack nooooo she didn't want to interrupt this boil looked like he was having lunch! But...But her tree! Sob sob sob~
"U-uhm!" The small ghoul called out, hoping to get the boil's attention. She had her backwards hands clasped infront of her, and the toes of one foot was twisting nervously into the dirt behind her. "So sorry to interrupt your, um, lunch but..." As it always was with meeting someone she didn't immediately recognize, Amrita was not making eye contact; sure she glanced at him, but she spent just as much time turning her eye elsewhere. "D-do you mind if I sit here, too?" Hopefully he wouldn't. It was a tree, trees were public but what if he had a really, really big personal bubble? You could never be too careful!

Jove glanced up from his sandwich when he heard a timid little voice, and his ears perked forward. A little girl? Wait, he had seen her on campus before, in classes and stuff! It was a wonder they had never formally met yet. At first glance she didn't seem like the type to offer him random hugs or tell him how adorable he was like some ghouls, she seemed much more timid, and therefore a bit less likely to overstep herself. Was she shy because she was little, like he was? Or maybe because he could see her face bones? Jove could understand if that was the case, maybe having naked bone was regarded the same way as naked skin, it was just indecent. No fluff or clothes or anything.
Hopefully she looked up and wasn't simply waiting for a verbal reply. Jove's tail wagged hopefully, and although he didn't smile, his expression lightened. Of course she could sit too! In fact... He looked down at his lunch bag, and then up at the ghoul. His tail wagged more. And then he offered her one of the wrapped sandwiches.

When she didn't get an answer, Amrita thought it could mean one or two things; one, he was unfriendly or two, he was a mute like Christof. She didn't imagine him as being unfriendly, because in her experience unfriendly people were very blatantly so, and this boil had yet to tell her off or get to get up and leave. Which...probably meant it was the latter. Just in case she was right, she glanced at him a little more, surprised to see...that he was wagging his tail? Hm. DC wagged his tail when he was up to something, which usually meant he was happy, so...perhaps the boil was happy? That was a good thing, right? Unhappy people didn't offer sandwiches, either.
Plus he looked fluffy, and Amrita had yet to meet an unfriendly fluffy person. Luckily for Jove, she really did have absolutely no intention of scritching his ears or fawning over how cute he was. Biting on what remained of her lower lip, the ghoul accepted the offered sandwich in a backwards hand. "Thank you!" She piped up, looking around for a quick moment before she took a chance and sat down beside the boil, her knees pulled up to her chest and her feet tucked under her.
"I'm Amrita." The boil was shyly glanced at while she slowly unwrapped the sandwich; it was a slow process and one hand seemed damaged, both by the stitch marks that tugged at the dark skin, and by the odd bend and points of the knuckles. "Do you know sign language?" She had already convinced herself that he was mute.

The pup watched curiously as the ghoul took the sandwich and sat down, his ears perking up, and his eyes showing no trace of judgement or scorn for the unusual way her feet seemed to fold under her. He had never seen anyone with feet like that before. And her hands, they were backwards too! Was it hard to balance like that?
He almost missed her introduction, he was too focused on the way she unwrapped the sandwich. Was she hurt? Maybe he should have done it for her, it would have been the most gentlemanly thing to do. Alas, he was only just a little puppy, and would need several years longer before he would make a habit out of courtesy and gentility like his caretaker... Still, he had offered her a sandwich, and that had been a good idea.
His ears swivelled around, turning forward to focus on her as she asked a question. His head tilted slightly. Sign language? Was that like speaking shortened sentences, like on signs?

She got the sandwich open on her own easily enough, but she did not eat it right away. Instead she was watching him watch her, mildly embarrassed when she realized he was focusing on her hands. Luckily a distraction came in the form of his response which really...wasn't much of one at all. Not only had he not spoken yet, but he also wasn't signing either! Awwww Jack how was she going to talk to him if he couldn't, well, talk!
"Ahh...I guess not." The small ghoul murmured, drumming her fingers oddly against the sandwich's crust. While she mulled over how to approach the whole conversation thing (perhaps he had a book hidden somewhere, like Christof?), she took a distracted bite of her food, looking over her equally small companion. It was neat to have someone about her size! He was a little bigger yes, but he was a boil and boils were supposed to be bigger, or so she imagined. She did recall seeing him in classes, but never face-to-face.
"I...I like your scarf." She informed him, deciding to try and get him talk (or communicate) by complimenting him. "Did you make it?"

Jove's ears fell slightly as the ghoul fell into a silent, rather pensive mood. This was odd... The only other ghoul about their age he had any experience with was Tomoko, and the little kitsune seemed to like chattering to fill the silence. But then again, his foxfires were usually quiet like this too, and they were fine company.
The pup seemed to recover from his own thoughtful mood, and took a bite of his own sandwich. Cucumber. It only made sense, his brother didn't eat things that had once walked around, even if they were particularly tasty...
His ears perked up when he heard her speak again, and he turned with an inquisitive look. Did he make... Oh! Of course scarves had to be made by someone, like how Junko made clothes! Jove had never really thought about it like that before, all he knew was that his caretaker gave him that scarf. He glanced down and regarded it fondly, shaking his head in answer.
It might not have been the sort of communication Amrita was hoping for, but he did wag his tail to show he was comfortable with her company.

She didn't mind the silence, it was a nice change from some of the other people she knew; but that didn't stop her from being curious as to whether or not the boil could speak in any way. The sandwich was thoughtfully chewed on but not really tasted; at the very least she could tell it was crunchy, and she did her best to keep the food on the fleshy side of her face. Having an open skull was a hinderance and messy, but at least she still had some of her cheek left.
"Was it a gift?" Amrita was still doing her best to make him talk, but alas she didn't quite grasp the concept of giving questions that couldn't be answered with a yes or no. Until, of course, she realized something.
"...What's your name, again?"

Jove nodded enthusiastically, showing no concern for her lack of face as he glanced over. He loved to receive clothes of any sort to try on and wear, but it was extra special when it was from his caretaker. His tail wagged once again, remembering his recent visit, showing the old man all the things he had learned at the academy and how the vampire had been so proud...
Lost in his own pleasant thoughts for a minute, he didn't realize he hadn't introduced himself properly until she spoke once more. Oh dear, he had forgotten to give his name! Sometimes he still lived more in a doggy world, where names didn't mean as much as scent and posture.
"Jove," he said, his quiet voice bearing a trace of an english accent. He bowed his head after he said it, a non-verbal "pleased to meet you."

"A-ah!" Amrita fumbled to catch the sandwich that she mysteriously lost grip on, managing to prevent it from hitting the ground. Did...Did the boil just talk?! "YOU CAN TALK?!" He did! She heard him! So why didn't he...?! Maybe he was...really, really quiet? Looking sheepish again, she looked down quickly, pretending like she hadn't just randomly yelled.
"I..I mean, uh, H-hi, Jove." She squeaked out, taking a distracted bite of the sandwich that she didn't almost drop, really! But then she didn't know what else to say; the mystery of his speech ability was solved, what else was there to do? So she settled for eating in silence, knees still pulled up against her chest.

The pup fumbled with his own sandwich as Amrita shouted, his ears pricking up and his tail poofing out in a startled manner as he blinked in her direction. What, of course he could talk! He blushed brightly, his cheeks literally glowing with light as he glanced back down in a bashful manner. He could talk just fine, it wasn't remarkable or anything...
Jove quickly became embarrassed by his own blushing, and took a giant bite of his sandwich in an attempt to cover it. Why in Jack's name did he have to go and dig himself deeper by being surprise and then blushing about it? Blushing was for silly ghouls. And he sure didn't want to look like a ghoul!

If the ghoul noticed how embarrassed he was she didn't let on, especially since she had started it. Jove didn't fumble with embarrassment just like she didn't yell! There, they were even. The silence was pretty comfortable, actually! She looked around, she stared at the sandwich...and then she stared at Jove, who had just finished taking the biggest bite of sandwich known to all scarelings. Whoooa! That was impressive! Wait...
"...U-uhm...be...careful you don't choke!" She squeaked out timidly, not really sure what to do if he DID choke on his food. Just in case though, she put her own half eaten treat down on her lap.

Jove tilted his head to look at her, only the lingering remnants of a blush on his cheeks. Don't... choke? Oh! He forgot living things sometimes did that, something about food going down a 'wrong way' and ending up not being able to do that breathing thing. The pup didn't have to worry about things like that, he hadn't even bothered to chew that giant bite of sandwich before swallowing it.
He blinked pale blue eyes at her, and then down at her sandwich. Hopefully it wasn't unpalatable! But she seemed mostly focused on him...
With another round of blushing he took another large bite, feeling very self-conscious under her watchful eye. Maybe Ren had the right idea, packing him all these sandwiches. Just in case.

Oh, back to silence. Well, okay! The ghoul shrugged, looking away to stare elsewhere, taking an absent bite of her sandwich. She didn't know what to say now, and the silence was fine. After a prolonged silence, Amrita's sandwich was finished, and she dusted her hands before uselessly dusting off her dirty and blood strained sari-dress.
"That was very good, thank you!" She chirped, remembering her manners at least. As she did she took stock of the still absolutely full lunchbag. "...Who made all this...?" Something told her the boil didn't.

As his embarrassment faded, Jove went back to eating more normally. Since he had no need to actually eat food, there was definitely no point to devouring it so fast he couldn't taste it. The taste was the entire reason for eating. And these meatless sandwiches were pretty tasty. He supposed he could give Ren credit for that, taking things that were not his preferred food, and making them good to eat.
He went through the rest of the sandwich in silence, and had only the crust left when Amrita thanked him. Oh, she was done already? Did that mean she was going to leave?
Jove wasn't sure whether the situation warranted a tail wag or flopped ears, so he mostly just sort of stared with a confused expression as she glanced over at his bag. And then finally his ears perked and his tail wagged once as he thought about the gryphon who packed the Everlasting Lunch. The overflowing meal might have made him grumpy, but he did love his brother very much. "Ren," he replied, that accent only barely appearing in his quiet speech. Then he offered her another sandwich from the bag.
