 She was exhausted, not just from the shortage of water, but from the turmoil that had filled her since the drought first became a problem. The question of what was right and what was moral had beaten her down until she just wanted to stop thinking. Her thoughts were like a herd of elephants let loose in her skull, continuously stampeding round and round her mind, wearing her down like the real animals wore down the very rocks of the earth. She was feeling emotionally and mentally battered, and it was a new and unpleasant sensation for her.
Coughing as the infernal sand-dust stuck in her dry throat, she padded wearily into the scant shade provided by a sun-blasted Baobab tree. Letting her body collapse she curled up, her back against the rough bleached bark of the tree, chin resting heavily across her paws as she panted tiredly, flanks heaving in a futile attempt to cool her dehydrated body.

 Ute was on the brink of insanity it seemed. Ever since the finding of her missing mother and her life teetering not he edge of death; no one could blame her. She hadn't really left her mothers side for days, though Ea; her aunt and the medic tending to Zii, sent her off to get some air. It wasn't healthy to sit and dwell on it. So Ute was doing just that, off wandering. Well, not really wandering aimlessly, it just sort of looked like that. Her head was hanging, her eyes half lidded. She could not lose her mother. She couldn't.
And now there was talk of rationing water! Which would mean, her mother; being weak at this stage, would be limited her intake and the stronger ones would gain more! What an insult. Her mother is a guard, though her rank would probably change if she did heal. Ea said her hips and hind legs were badly hurt. Regardless, Ute would not allow such an upsetting thing without a fight. As she walked, her blue eyes stared out in a worried state

The heat shimmer that rose off the sands made anything more than several strides away wavy and indistinct, but even so, Kuza recognized the very white figure of the lioness as she padded by. Lifting her heavy head she tried to call out only to send herself into a coughing fit. Clearing her throat she managed the second time around, her dry, dusty voice sounded unlike herself, but then so did almost every other lion.
"Ute!" Stiffly she pushed herself to her feet though didn't leave the shade of the tree. The heat had drained her already and she rather hoped the other female would come join her where it was at least somewhat cooler and thus, more bearable than standing about under the full glare of the sun.
"How is your mother doing?" She had heard that something had happened and that Zii was badly hurt, but no one seemed to know what exactly had gone on to wound Ziimoto so badly and Kuza herself had been out looking for water more often than not or late and hadn't heard any news on Zii's condition.

Ute lifted her head and stopped the red lioness ahead of her. She did exactly what was expected of her, she headed into the shade and sat down, her head hanging lightly. "My mother... she is... she is stable. She woke a few days ago and is talking, but... my Aunt-" whom everyone knew was the medic; "-says she may not walk again..." She looked up; knowing that with the current water debate; her mother may become someone who would be denied adequate water. .. It was no wonder that Ute looked like she hadn't slept in a long time. Bags were under her eyes. Her eyes were blood shot.
"I think she will pull through... she's strong... but... she could still die... we don't know.. she could get an infection. She may be bleeding...'
