Get it hacked. Get Cool new themes, and whatnot. Also use it for Skype.
And since it's hacked, you can download games. And emulators. SNES/PS1/N64
Get: Dissidia 012 if you liked Dissidia. Birth By Sleep was great So was Crisis Core Tekken Dark Ressurection is one of my favorite PSP games. I play it like nonstop. xD I've also heard the Fire Emblem game on it is pretty awesome.

Jeanne d'Arc was and still is one of the best games I've played on the PSP.
Persona 3 was also pretty good. I don't know which one I got though, it was the one that added the female main protagonist.
Phantasy Star Portable 2 is also pretty great. If you want to play that online with people, you'll have to actually buy a new copy to get the online code. :U Can't hack that one.
Actually that's about all I can remember. The Final Fantasy remakes were also okay. The first three were games that I've actually beaten the story mode to.

Le Derpy Hooves Persona 3 was also pretty good. I don't know which one I got though, it was the one that added the female main protagonist. Seconding the Persona 3 Portable recommendation. P3 was pretty good on the PS2; Portable fixes a lot of my major complaints about P3 and then adds the ability to play as a girl.

I 'veowned about 30 games for the psp, trading them in when finished. Here are the ones I'm hanging onto: Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions. Tactics Ogre: Let us cling together I'm putting these two together because the team that did TO.for the snes is the same team that did FFT. The remake is done so well that TO its now arguably superior, but FFT's story shouldn't be missed.
Jeanne D'arc is an SRPG about Joan of Arc's quest. With magical power rangers armlets, sorcery, goblins, demonic possession, furries, and a giant talking purple frog amongst other thing. Did I mention Level 5 made it? Y'know, Dragon Quest 8 and 9, Dark Cloud, Layton, Rogue Galaxy?
Valkyrie Profile: this one is a pretty straight up port of a very good (and emo as ********) psx rpg. Average cost of an original copy of vp is about 90 dollars. It's that good.
Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days. I have 483 hours of playtime on this. The pkrt adds a bunch of s**t.
MGS: Peace Walker. Take 3 parts MGS 3, one part management simulator, 2 posts monster hunter. Stir. Enjoy.
Valkyria Chronicles 2: Go to high school! Fight in World War 1! It's a 3rd person shooter with SRPG underpinning. You will love this game, but hate V2s. ******** those guys.
Persona 3 Portable: Another resounding endorsement here.
Birth By Sleep! Best playing KH game yet. The story's even semi decent!
If you're into more shootout games, start with Syphon Filter.

That's not to say that Dissidia is bad. There are other good games, I just listed my favorites.

I actually bought my PSP especially for Persona 3 Portable. I also got Harvest Moon: Hero of Leaf Valley and Persona Portable (a remake of the very first Persona) and found them both unplayable. I played a bunch of demos from the PSN, and Dissidia was pretty awesome (but you know that already :p). Half-Minute Hero is also fun. Peace Walker wasn't really my thing, but I don't see why you wouldn't enjoy it if you like MGS-type stuff at all.
In general, though, I'm really not a fan of the PSP at all because of it's crappy analog stick that hurts my hand/wrist and terrible loading times. Yet, somehow, ironically, Persona 3 Portable is my favourite game of all time. I've played it through three times already, and am still going because I haven't yet mastered everything in it. It's a really great game, the loading screens are completely reasonable, the controls are perfect, and you'll just get a LOT of playtime out of it.
It may just be me, but I find the gameplay to be really unique and totally addictive, the characters to be some of the best-developed in any game I've played, the music to be eargasmic, the voice acting to be great (or just funny at times), and the story to be... well, it just really affected me deeply, and normally I'm all for games that don't even have a story. Definitely don't miss out on it!

I was thinking of getting Persona 1, because recently I've come to really enjoy Atlus games.

Persona 1 is ...not for everyone. I couldn't finish it either. It badly needed an update and got a straight port instead. You're better off with 3.
Also ugh jaycorn I have been hunting for half minute hero forever

You could buy 3 sight unseen and not regret it. 1 may warrant further investigation. You don't need to have played 1 to fully appreciate 3.
